Ann, Linda, Brenda, Alice Fay, Cheryl, and Betty, these peppy school spirited cheerleaders, were always ready to lead the student body in a pep rally. We enjoy our nice new auditorium so much. This fall when we came back to school, new drapes had been put up. This really set it off. The 1960-61 annual staff left the lectern as their gift to the audi- torium. Mr. Martin of the United States Society of Zoology is showing one of his many animals in the auditorium. Miss Brown and Mrs. Clifton are wondering if they have seen that expression in one of their English classes. 6 AND, THEN, TOO • • 7 IT’S FORMAL Tommy Castle, Sue Stone, Charlene Ring, and Bryce Cas- tle seem to be enjoying themselves at the Prom. Kyle and Saundra prefer watching. Linda and Phillip look as if they could have danced all night. Unidentified spooks! Could it be Earnestine and Jeweldine Hensdill? Mr. Campbell and Mr. Rhea, Say nothing to anyone about anyone that you wouldn ' t want anyone to hear. Miss Wysor, Mr. McCoy, Mr. Cross, and Miss Brown chat informally at the faculty meeting. These are questions for deep thought for all students, particularly the seniors. Coun- seling Linda Meade is Mr. Sabo. Holding their first election in the cafeteria, the seniors show much concern who will be the class officers for 1961-62. By the show of hands, we can see it is not unanimous. Randall Blackstone, Shirley Hobbs, Judith Bradley, and Delores Sutherland are decorating the bulle- tin board, giving emphasis to the opening of school. They seem to be doing a good job. ALL OF THIS IS OUR SCHOOL IN MEMORIAM Mr. B. C. White Bom October 1, 1888 Died July 20, 1961 Mr. Frank E. Harr Born August 21, 1891 Died July 31, 1961 FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES MOURN THE PASSING OF TWO MEN THIS YEAR Mr. White came to Russell County in 1924 as principal of Temple Hill High School and held that position for twelve ye ars. After resign- ing his teaching career, he devoted most of his time to orcharding. He served on the Board of Supervisors for many years, where he served most capably and was a recognized authority on its many complex problems. It was during this time he pioneered bus transportation in Russell County and led the campaign to build a new high school and ele- mentary school at Castlewood. For this task the county could not have found a man more dedi- cated to the cause. Today we enjoy this modern new building. The words of Daniel Webster describe his teaching career as expressed by a former student: If we work upon marble, it will perish. If we work upon brass, time will efface it. If we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But if we work upon men ' s immortal mind, if we imbue them with high principles, with the just fea r of God and love of their fellow men, we engrave on those tablets something which no time can efface, and which will brighten and brighten to all eternity. Mr. Frank Harr, a modest softspoken man was indeed a born leader and a modern pioneer. He loved people and found room for them in his heart. He served on the Russell County School Board almost fourteen years. Here his deep in- terest lay in the betterment of all educational fields. No man, it is said, is indispensable. The void is soon filled by another. Yet each man leaves his own mark-a mark which cannot be re- placed or erased. So it is with Mr. Harr. M FOREWORD This year at Castlewood High has given us many things to remem- ber: The happy reunions of the first days at school. Then, too, the sad feeling, some realizing this would be their last year at C. H. S. The excitement of the football season followed by the Homecoming . . . , The first six weeks ' tests .... The Christmas Season .... The anxiety of exam week .... Junior-Senior Prom .... and then .... Gradua- tion. For some students, this year was their first at C. H. S. For others, their last. For everyone it was A Year to Remember.” Weather permitting, Old Glory” is hoisted to her lofty height each morning. Kyle Hillman and Johnny Ziegler are performing this duty, while Frank Clifton plays to the colors. 15 RUSSELL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD AND . . SEATED: Roscoe Musick, Elwood Bausell, Chairman; Paul Brown, C. L. Dickenson. STANDING: J. L. Porter III, K. O. Hartsock, George Bundy, Hamilton Wade, Clerk; Supt. G. H. Givens. Jack B. Renick Director of Instructions Jimmy Humphrey Visiting Teacher (Sorry we did not get Mr. Charles McFarlane ' s picture.) 16 : • ' v ADMINISTRATORS It is most appropriate that we honor our principal, Mr. Carter, who has played a major role in our school lives. In addition to his many duties as principal, he has in- spired us to keep pace with the great strides in curriculum changes, athletic compe- tition, and student activities. He has led our school through the transition from the eleven-year to the twelve-year system. We express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Carter for the many things he did to enrich our lives and make this year A Year to Remember. Class of 1962 Dr. G. H. Givens Divi sion Superintendent The Schools of Russell County Since 1928 17 It would be impossible to say how many times we have been encouraged and helped by the outgoing friendliness of our assistant principal, Mr, John Graybeal. It is he who watches our grades and activities to make sure that we are traveling the right road. It is he who helps us about our scholarships. Our years in high school and our future in all fields of life are influenced by his guidance and practical advice. Here are the boys and girls who made the story of this yearbook and for whom it is told. They are the school, for in the final analysis, the students make the school what it is. Any way each student has made a mark for himself and to us, the seniors, it is A Year to Remember. CLASSES SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Charlene Ring, secretary; Texie Penland, Reporter; Janice Meade, vice-president; Joe Farris, president; Randall Blackstone, treasurer. (Absent) CLASS HISTORY The senior class of 1962 is reaching the first plateau of life - graduation from Castlewood High School. Our precious memories are numerous as we recall the years that have passed so swiftly. Learning the combination to our first locker, finding our way around the giant building, and trying to figure out our schedules proved to be a memorable experience. Next came the chief joy of our freshman year, that of no longer being the youngest class in school. Our sophomore year we remember well as we gradually became accustomed to this new home away from home and participated in school activities. By the time our junior year rolled around, we felt more self- confident and relaxed. As seniors, we realized it would be our responsibility to set an example for the underclassmen to follow. Strange as it may seem, this is not the end of the road for any of us, it is simply the parting of the ways. Our road has branched into many smaller roads, some leading to college, some to immediate working positions, and some to professional training. We must never stop and linger along the wayside, but we must continue on in our quest for further knowledge, for this is just the beginning. Each school year brings a revival of that ever-present school spirit. September is a busy month of paying fees, meeting classes, getting schedules changed, electing officers, and that all-important first senior class meeting! From our many activities we developed leadership and initiative as we worked on different club projects. We learned cooperation and teamwork as we met newspaper and yearbook deadlines, practiced for plays, and took part in band festivities. Stimulating greater interest in the use of the library and improving the library service are the primary aims of the Library Club. Writing book reviews by the members to appear in The Sentinel have helped to stimulate interest in a better choice of reading. Besides making the bulletin boards more attractive, the members make supplementary reading lists for the teachers. Purchasing bookmarkers have helped to eliminate dog-eared” books. LIBRARY CLUB ART CLUB Giving the art exhibit, changing the hall bulletin board, and making posters for the various organizations have kept us quite busy. In addition, we helped the Sentinel staff with their art work. FIRST ROW: Cheryl Smith, Charlene Ring, Lois Hicks, Judy Kaye Meade. BETA CLUB 68 BETA CLUB OFFICERS Janice Meade, president; Bobbie Kiser, vice-president; Eva Lynn Searcey, secretary; Jane Garrett, treasurer; Eugene Stone, reporter; Mrs. Carter, sponsor. The purpose of the Beta Club is to promote the ideals of honesty, leadership, and service among high school students; and to reward meritorious achievement. Our members were asked to join because of their worthy characters, scholarships, creditable achievements, and commendable attitudes. The main objectives for the year were buying clothes for two primary students for Christmas, paying for two pages in the annual, making a float for the Homecoming game, which won first place, and being responsible for the student body learning our Alma Mater song. (All have been realized except the last one mentioned.) The club held a Colors of the Rainbow ceremony for the induction of new members at an assembly program in November. It seems as if the Betas caught the Dragon — the first prize. SECOND ROW; Mr. Sabo, sponsor; Omer Kiser, president; Joe Farris. The SCA is an organization which has as its pri- mary aim the development of good citizenship. Every student in school is a member of this student organi- zation. Many students feel the SCA is just another club in which they have no part. Perhaps getting the entire student body to feel they are an integral part of the SCA is one objective that the SCA must strive to attain. The SCA as it is organized in most schools with representatives from every student activity and organi- zation naturally falls heir to the responsibility of co- ordination of student activities. The objectives include the following: 1. To organize all other clubs under SCA direction. 2. To plan a Christmas program. 3. To encourage a better school-community re- lationship. 4. To keep school grounds clean. 5. To sponsor American Education Week. 6. To sponsor floats and a Homecoming dance. 7. To keep bulletin boards up to date. 8. To have grace at meals. The SCA plans a vigorous program this year. Be- lieving that progress is only accomplished through action, the SCA has planned many worthy objectives. 73 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA FIRST ROW: Robert Osborne, Douglas Purcell, Don Bradley, Paul Adams, Sammy Gibson, Maynard Franklin, Mr. Rhea, advisor. Each year delegates are sent to the State Rally at V.P.I. The F.F. A. sponsors a Purebred Yorkshire Pig Chain. At the present time we have five animals in our chain. We also present a program each year for the Castlewood Farmers Club and strive to have a well-planned educational program for each of our chapter meetings. Some of our other activities are entering exhibits at the Russell County Fair and showing hogs at the Bristol Junior Hog Show. Tommy Johnson, James Gibson, and Abel Oney are making a go cart. 74 F. An interior decorator, home economist, a buyer for a depart - mentstore, a nurse, and a beautician, have given lectures to the F. H. A. girls this year. Also a demonstration on crafts was given. Gathering natural materials this fall to make dried winter arrangements for our department has developed new hobbies in F. H. A. Food baskets for Thanksgiving were given to needy families. The girls also entered an educational exhibit for the Russell County Fair--individual F. H. A. members entered many exhibits too. As prospective teachers, the members hope to maintain high standards of scholarship, citizenship, and to encourage the development of personality and character traits necessary for successful teaching. The members are willing to be of assistance to both high school and grade teachers. They strive for better student- teacher relationship. Soliciting clothing for the Clothing Bank has been successfully carried out. The club has joined the National Future Teachers Club. Co-Ed Hi-Y Club received its charter at an Induction and Charter Presentation Ceremony with Rev. E. C. Vestal as the principal speaker. Mr. Fulton K. Johnson, Secretary of the Western Virginia District of the Y.M.C.A., presented the charter to Elaine Farr, President, who accepted it for the club. The purpose of the club is to create, maintain, and extend high standards of Christian character throughout the home, school, and community. Mrs. Sutherland and Mr. McCoy are the advisors. 76 The toss of the coin, the referee ' s whistle, cheers of encouragement — the 1961-62 Blue Devils sports season, was off to a fighting start as our football team took to the field in our opening game with St. Paul. Of course we did not win every game, but we compiled a record worthy of praise, losing only to Lebanon and Garden. The athletic program stressed good sportsmanship and skills which have paid large dividends by winning a fine sportsmanship rating for the last two years and thus making A Year to Remember” in athletics. Two big features of the year were the Junior-Senior Prom and the selecting of Miss Castlewood. The Home- coming festivities and the Bonfire Rally created much enthusiasm and determination to win. The minute one stepped from the gangplank he felt he was on an island in Hawaii. We were given leis of various colors which enhanced the beautiful surrounding of palms, trop- ical fish, birds, and flowers. The Royal Aristocrates under the direction of Mr. Anderson furnished the music by which the Juniors, Seniors, and theirdates danced until mid- night. This climaxed A Year to Remember and the Juniors began to look forward to next year when they would be the socialites. A penny for your thoughts, Jean. 88 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM Sammy, you ' re too tall for me. 89 PTA SPONSORS A beauty contest sponsored by the P.T.A. was held December 2, 1961, in the Castlewood High School audi- torium where fifty-three girls vied for the title of Miss Castlewood. The con- testants were beautiful in g o w n s of rainbow hue. The graciousness and charm the girls displayed made the judging of this event so difficult. 90 BEAUTY CONTEST P.T.A. officers: Mrs. W. B.
