Mrs. Stella Gibson 1 THE OF AN THE OURS EDUCATION .j ik ' ' - THE IS ALWAYS PRESENT 7 WE REMAIN EVER LOYAL FOREWORD in planning our theme this year, we, the annual staff, become acutely aware of the necessity of boys and girls preparing them- selves to meet the many challenges which we face in a new decade. Life is a CHAL- LENGE and we believe the rewards are for those who meet the challenge successfully. We know that we will appi ' eciate and enjoy the things the new decade holds for us if we have a part in meeting and solving the ob- stacles which lie ahead. Using as our theme, “THE CHALLENGE IS OURS”, let each of us resolve to pick up the strong threads of our best endeavors of the past, add new vigor needed to meet the present challenges, and we hope that with this volume of the Castletonian we may see a continuous pattern reflecting accomplish- ments of the annual staff. Let us remember — the past is gone; the future is uncertain ; the present is all we have ; today is the very best day — “THE CHALLENGE IS OUR.” 8 TO OUR GOAL .. CARTER TALKS TO STUDENT BODY OUR FIRST ASSEMBLY FOR 1960-1961 i • I I 1 THE YEAR 1960-61 MARKS THE COMPLETION OP THE CASTLEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL THE The completion of your fine auditorium, a modern athletic field, and the addition of six classrooms and cafeteria at the elementary building, brings to you and your community the most adequate and modern school facili- ties to be found anywhere in the western part of Virginia. The fine cooperation of you and your parents has made this possible, and we are all very proud of this achieve- ment. We must remember, however, that this building is only a means to an end. It is the young people within the walls of the build- ing that make the school. This school was erected to make it possible for you to de- velope the abilities which you have, to the fullest extent. I feel sure you have taken full advantage of the opportunities which have been available to you, and it is my fervent hope that all the boys and girls of the Castle- wood community will, in years to come, take full advantage of the increased opportunities which they have. It is my prayer that each of you move on to greater achievements in the years ahead. Sincerely, G. H. Givens 12 ADMINISTRATION In Appreciation It is with much pride and pleasure that we write a per- sonal message of thanks to you, Mr. Carter, our principal. We thank you for the many times you have told us of the need to prepare ourselves for tomorrow. Now tomorrow has become today. We feel that we are more prepared to meet the many challenges of this new decade since having you as our principal throughout our high school years. Our stay has not only been happy years, but also, most profit- able years. We want to express also our thanks and appreciation to the whole faculty at Castle- wood High for their untiring efforts in our behalf. Class of 1961 ! i 13 S I Miss Linda Amburgey, the sec- retary of Castlewood High, has been with us only this year. She is a 1959 graduate. She performs her many tasks in such a pleasing manner and wears a smile for everyone. “Smile and the world smiles with you ; weep and you weep alone.” We, the class of 1961, wish to express our thanks and gratitude to Mr. Graybeal, our assis- tant principal, for his guidance, friendship, and service. Mr. Graybeal has a guiding influence over the interest of the stu- dents at C.H.S. He does much to inspire us to take advantage of an ed- ucation. He keeps us in- formed about the scho- larships that are being offered by different col- leges and organizations. CLASS HISTORY Many events have crowned this our senior year at Castlewood High. First, the thrill we had to be the first football players to use the new football field. Second, we, the seniors of 1961, the first class to graduate under the five-year plan, leave our Alma Mater a year older that the past graduates of C.H.S. and, we hope, a year wiser. But regardless of our longer stay, we realize only too soon that our days were but few at C.H.S. However, not until we receive our diplomas will we be- come aware that our footsteps will be only echoes in the halls at Castlewood High. Our constant hope will be that our school has been enriched by our having been here because we feel we are finer students and that we are better prepared for the challeng- ing years ahead through the untiring efforts of our capable teachers and from the know- ledge instilled in us by them and from their high ideals set forth as shining light along our many challenges in life. We express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Carter, Mr. Graybeal, our sponsors, and to all the teachers who have had a part in shaping our lives. 18 If ' : V ! ; JIMMY ADDINGTON Band 9,10; Football 10,11; Science Club 9-12. STUDENT COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION SCA members, Bryce Castle, Tommy Blackstone, William Gibson, and John Dooley pledge allegiance to the flag. The S.C.A. has an extensive program planned for the 1960-61 term. All parts of this program are carried out by five com- mittees, which are Publicity, Welfare, Pro- gram, Hospitality, and Buildings and Grounds. We are continuing our services for the school. The outstanding of these ser- vices are to patrol the lunch lines, strive to present better assembly programs, and sup- port the drives of non-profit making organi- zations in the school. The S.C.A. has many new goals we hope to accomplish. A few of these are to advertise our school through a column in two local newspapers, sponsor the Homecoming Dance, give a Christmas party for a needy family of the community, supervise a plan ned program of general im- provement for the school, and carry out the spring convention of the Clinch Valley Dis- trict of Va. But none of these plans can be carried through without the support of every member of the S.C.A., the faculty, and ad- ministration. BLUE DEVILS SET SCHOOL RECORD While compiling a record-breaking record 16 wins to 2 losses, the Blue Devils displayed team- work that is seldom equaled. Captain Joe Farris (18.6), Texie Peland (11.5), Lowell Marshall (10.2), and William Gibson (10), had seasonal averages that point out the secret of winning. Freddie Wallace, Randall Blackstone, and Cal- vin Dickenson were young inexperienced but their timely hustle and desire to win made all the dif- ference in a win or a loss. Credit should be given to Tommy Blackstone, Bruce Porter, Don Brad- ley, Charlie Osborne, and Glenn Jessee for their seasonal work. For without them such a fine rec- ord could not have been compiled.
