However, it was not a discouraging or completely disappointing season. It was a new team, with only three veterans returning. Lacking superstars, with the possible exception of John Young, the team was small in number; but everyone who played played good basketball, and the team worked quite well together, especially in the last half of the season. In his first year at Castleton, coach Wally Colender didn’t win his rightful share of games, but showed he could handle a team. With the right breaks the record could easily have been 15 and 5. Out¬ standing on the court was the “blond bomber” John Young. His point per game average of 30 was 7th in the national NAIA small college statistics. He holds the CSC single game scoring record at 52 points. Fans saw a lot of hustle on the court from Ted Pierce, Ken Goodin, Sam DeBonis, and Bob Davis. Big men on the boards were Jim Gabert, Russ Beauchemin, and Denny Wright. Rounding out the squad and doing a fine job when called on were Wayne Shepherd and John Wright. 75
