ELLIS HALL HASKELL HALL LEAVENWORTH HALL Pat Gorman Debbie Meleen Suzi Withington Jane Davis Sharon Norton Judy Pennock Leavenworth Hall 1925 By the year 1926 Castleton was a rapidly growing school. It had outgrown its then present accomodations. The chapel and the new Woodruff Hall were the only buildings. A dormitory was badly needed. Two years previous, the admin¬ istration had tried to pass a bill through the state legislature which would ap¬ propriate funds for this purpose. It had been defeated. The voters of Castleton turned to Philip Leavenworth, Idng time supporter, and once owner and princi¬ pal of the school. A struggle followed, the outcome to determine life or death for the school. Mr. Leavenworth and Mr. Edward Ellis, Rutland county senator, led in the struggle and succeeded in getting the bill passed. The bill appropriated $110,000 for the building of a dormitory. Philip Leavenworth died several months before the building was completed. It was named in honor of the man who had fought so hard to bring it into existence. 47
