' ... OLD CHAPEL completed 1867 CASTLETON STATE COLLEGE CASTLETON VERMONT CASTLETON E 1967 FOREWORD This, the 1967 edition of the CASTLETONE, is hoped to be an adequate review of the school year at Castleton State College. Adequate—not more than that. This book was being prepared during the time that the 1968 edition should have been in the preliminary stage. Because half the time that should have been spent on it was put into this book, does not mean that it was a “rush job.”-lt means simply that many things that should have been done were literally impos¬ sible to accomplish. A year is necessary to prepare a “year” book; the same year. Pictures of freshman orientation cannot be taken in April or May; if missed in September, they remain missed. You can’t butter your bread after you’ve eaten it. In February the S.A. decided on a summer publication, rather than have no book at all. At this time there was no editor. Because of loyalty, dedication to my class and school, and insanity, I took the job. The majority of these photographs were taken with a brownie or a borrowed camera. Some are poor, but better than none. Here is the 1967 CASTLETONE, in spite of problems with financ¬ ing, time, equipment, and personnel. No color, not even off-color, just a few black and white remembrances for some who attended CSC during the 1966-67 school year. RICHARD TERRY Noteworthy in the college’s growth and expansion, which has been most evident in recent years, is the development of our fine Physical Education program. T. Richard Terry has been teacher, coach, and Director of Athletics since he came to Castleton in 1958. He attended Cortland (N.Y.) State Teachers College, and received his M.S. from Pennsylvania State University. He has coached the varsity soccer,.baseball, basketball, golf, and track teams. In 1965 he introduced-La- crosse to C.S.C., and now coaches that in the spring. Several members of the class of 1967 played on Mr. Terry’s 1963 N.A.I.A. national co-champion soccer team. His soccer teams have consistently been at the top of the New England State College Conference, and the N.A.I.A. district. In the classroom Mr. Terry teaches courses including Coaching Techniques, Adapted Physical Education, and Health; also several P.E. activity courses. He organized a summer soccer league in 1965; and is a qualified athletic official. In spite of a busy schedule in every season of the year, Mr. Terry is always willing to help any student who ' seeks his advice. It was a unanimous decision that the class of 1967 dedicate this one-hundredth anniversary yearbook to T. Richard Terry in appreciation for his unfaltering service, and genuine interest in the college and students. His is an example of what makes a college survive a hundred years, and gives it prom¬ ise of becoming an even greater institution. 7 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY RICHARD J. DUNDAS President CHARLES W. Our class is the first that he has been working with for four years. Terry hails from Springfield, Vermont and graduated from the University of New Hampshire. He is bookstore manager and director of student activi¬ ties. Each is a full time job, but he has been handling both very capably. Through his whol- hearted enthusiasm many new activities and or¬ ganizations that didn’t exist previously are now very much a part of the college. Terry’s interest in the student is vital to the functioning of the Student Association. It is this interest that has helped new clubs get started, and kept organiza¬ tions going. Terry is advisor to the yearbook. HARRISON A. BRANN LIBRARIAN JOHN PELLETIER MAINTENANCE JOHN F. This year thir¬ teen students will be graduated from the program. These thirteen students have come not only from Vermont but two other states. Some will be going on for more schooling while others will be¬ gin their careers in nursing as soon as graduation has passed. Their two years at Castleton have been filled with courses on campus in nursing and oth¬ er academic courses along with their practical experience at Rutland Hospi¬ tal. There have been field trips to Brandon Training School, the Elizabeth Lund Home, and several other places. At the end of their Freshmen year they spent three weeks at Brattleboro Re¬ treat for their psychiatric training. They had both classroom work and practical experience while there. This year’s class will be the first class to graduate wear¬ ing the graduate cap. joan mcintosh MICHELLE MULLIGAN FAY STROFFOLENO EMILIA TOMASELLO JOYCE SHUMWAY CLINTON RUSSELL ANNETTE DUBOIS JUDITH HOWARD SALLY HYDE 36 PROFILES WALTER J. It had outgrown its then present accomodations. The chapel and the new Woodruff Hall were the only buildings. A dormitory was badly needed. Two years previous, the admin¬ istration had tried to pass a bill through the state legislature which would ap¬ propriate funds for this purpose. It had been defeated. The voters of Castleton turned to Philip Leavenworth, Idng time supporter, and once owner and princi¬ pal of the school. A struggle followed, the outcome to determine life or death for the school. Mr. Leavenworth and Mr. Edward Ellis, Rutland county senator, led in the struggle and succeeded in getting the bill passed. The bill appropriated $110,000 for the building of a dormitory. Philip Leavenworth died several months before the building was completed. It was named in honor of the man who had fought so hard to bring it into existence. 47 ORIENTATION CLASS OF 1970 Orientation Chairmen Dennis Wright Anne Clark Rest is for the dead. However, it was not a discouraging or completely disappointing season. It was a new team, with only three veterans returning. Lacking superstars, with the possible exception of John Young, the team was small in number; but everyone who played played good basketball, and the team worked quite well together, especially in the last half of the season. In his first year at Castleton, coach Wally Colender didn’t win his rightful share of games, but showed he could handle a team. With the right breaks the record could easily have been 15 and 5. Out¬ standing on the court was the “blond bomber” John Young. His point per game average of 30 was 7th in the national NAIA small college statistics. He holds the CSC single game scoring record at 52 points. Fans saw a lot of hustle on the court from Ted Pierce, Ken Goodin, Sam DeBonis, and Bob Davis. Big men on the boards were Jim Gabert, Russ Beauchemin, and Denny Wright. Rounding out the squad and doing a fine job when called on were Wayne Shepherd and John Wright. 75 BASEBALL CSC 4 Temple Univ. 12 CSC 1 Temple Univ. 8 CSC 8 Philadelphia T. 12 CSC 1 Bridgewater 3 CSC 0 Virginia P.l. 21 CSC 5 Virginia P.l. 15 CSC 7 Lynchburg 12 CSC 5 Oneonta 17 CSC 5 Lyndon 4 CSC 10 Johnson 3 CSC 1 Fitchburg 2 CSC 2 Fitchburg 4 CSC 3 Lyndon 10 CSC 1 North Adams 14 CSC 2 Plymouth 11 76 Standing: Jim Ross, Jay Anderson, Mike Gallagher, Charlie Eaton, Blaine Goad. This is to have suc¬ ceeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson ■Hi We hope that this book will serve sufficiently in pre¬ serving some memories for those attending Castleton during the 1966-67 school year. In spite of the prob¬ lems and difficulties encountered in preparation of the book, a certain amount of satisfaction must be admit : ted to; even if it is only in getting it done. We are in debt to the Spartan and Jack Rogers for many of the photo- ' graphs. Appreciation for aid in photography also goes to Robert Bove of Burlington for the use of his equip¬ ment. It was a pleasure to work with Mr. Bill MacAlpine of the American Yearbook Company. We don’t have a masterpiece here, but a few pages of memories for those who care. 88 I
