Now comes the time of decision for your career ahead. It will probably be one of the most important decisions you will be called upon to make. Fortunately, you live in a land where freedom of choice and opportunity are almost unlimited. Of course, anyone’s “first job” is to get his basic education. Congratulations to you who get this job well done. Now, how about the next step? Career opportunities in education, with its many and div erse fields, organiza¬ tions, and professions, should interest almost any student. Most educational institutions are recognized for their high standards. It follows that standards for employment are high too — and a good education tops the list. An employer knows what kinds of people he is looking for. The student ready for a career should have an equally good idea of what he or she is looking for. Consulting with parents, counselors, friends, and with employers them¬ selves will reveal what kinds of positions are available in what kinds of or¬ ganizations. Evaluating your abilities and appraising your readiness for the career of your choice is the key to your future. There is no door it cannot unlock — when the key fits! HOFF GOVERNOR STATE OF VERMONT EXECUTIVE CHAMBER MONTPELI ER To The Class Of 1966: It is a pleasure for me as Governor of Vermont to join the faculty, students and friends of Castleton State College in dedicating “The Castletone 1966” to Dean Florence A. Black. Dean Black’s career of service at Castleton spans a period of great growth and development at the college. The significant expansion in program and intellectual activity at Castleton reflects her personal dedication to the ideas of education and to the concern of the people of Vermont for continually enriching the lives of our youth. She has inspired many young people, first as an instructor in history, geo¬ graphy, art, music and physical education and more recently as Dean and Acting President of the college. I can think of no greater testimony to her contribution to Vermont than to express my gratitude that so many persons who have shared her wealth of knowledge and experience are now teaching a new generation of pupils throughout the State of Vermont. Sincerely, Philip H. Hoff Governor 17 BOARD OF TRUSTEES BACK ROW: E. Craig Wilson, Charles Dollard, James Walter Cook, Edward Reiman (Chairman), Ruth W. Case, Robert Corley, Arthur Elliott. Do Not Ask If a Man Has Been Through College; Ask If a College Has Been Through Him If He Is a Walking University. E. H. Chapin Words cannot express the amount of satisfaction one receives in completing such a project as the Castletone of 1966. There is no beginning to the list of students who I would like to thank for of¬ fering their services to help construct this book. It would not have been pos¬ sible without the assistance of each and everyone of them. As in every publication, the publisher is instrumental in the technical aspects of constructing such a book. Thanks to Mr. Stan Sankowski for fulfilling such a position. Special recognition must be given to Mr. Norm Porter of the Norm Porter Stu¬ dio of Rutland. Mr. Porter very graciously donated much of his time and ef¬ forts to produce many of the fine pictures in this edition. Most of all, I would like to thank everyone who afforded with the opportunity to fulfill the editorship of this book. I hope I have met this demand with your satisfaction. Appreciatively, 112
