Phoenix Since man is mortal and in due time passes on, he is continually seeking to create immortality. Ancient myths tell us of the phoenix, a rare and beautiful bird that came out of Arabia every SOO years, burned itself on a funeral pyre, and arose anew, in body and spirit, from its own ashes, a young, resurrected bird of great beauty. The ancient people of China called their phoenix Fung- Hwang, and the early Egyptians viewed their phoenix as an incarnation of Ra, the sun god. This beautiful bird known as a phoenix became an emblem of immortality and the resurrection through all history. Our Phoenix is a school. lts timbers may sag, its stone may crumble, the earth itself may slip, but our school goes on and on. Life in our school is always young just by the nature of things, Life is continually being renewed by new young faces, life in a school never dies. Our school, like' the phoenix of myth- ology, renews itself and is the better for it. In September,, l96l, Castlemont, like the phoenix, will be born anew. But only a physical building this time marks our Fung-Hwang, our Ra, our rising sun. For, you see, this renaissance has been go-ing on for thirty odd years in the minds and in the hearts, especially in the hearts, of Castlemont graduates. During these years, young life became older but rejoiced in the knowledge that Castlemont would live forever and ever, in its halls, on its playing fields, and in its classrooms the young would be shown the way in life. Timber. and stone. and steel alone no more make a building than bone and flesh alone make- a man. lt's what is inside that counts-in the soul-and our school has a soul you know. Words of yesteryear are as true today as they were then. Every Knight and Lady knows that Castlemont will live for all eternity reaching and rising upward to the skies no matter what new physical shape it takes or how often it is reborn. The sectional division pages of the l96l Falcon photographically depict phases of construction of the new Castlemont campus, the physical rebirth of our school. The remaining graphic content of the' l96l Falcon photograph- ically records the educational and social phases of Castlemont life, the intel- lectual spiritual rebirth of our student body. For the above reasons, we, the members of the l96l Falcon staff, have selected Phoenix as our yearbook theme.

This second type of building, which at first glance may appear less spectacular than the first, is the type carried on by a teacher with students in a classroom. During his eleven years of teaching at Castlemont, Mr. James E. Snyder carried on such building. Up until his untimely death in January of this year, Pop Snyder, as he was called by Castlemont students and faculty members alike, poured into willing students his great talent for creating an appreciation and understanding of the beauty of expression to be found in vocal music. One day, even the new Castlemont campus buildings will fall, and perhaps our school will be rebuilt once again. But that which Pop Snyder constructed in the hearts and minds of his students and everyone that knew him cannot be destfoyed. Like a phoenix, it will endure to be reborn again and again from generation to generation. For these reasons, we, the members of the yearbook staff, dedicate the 1961 Falcon to the memory of Mr. James E. Pop Snyder.
