Superintendent Don Christenson High School principal Marvin Lam Carol Sattler High School Secretary. ADMINISTRATION We the students of Castle Rock, are very proud of our ad- ministration. It's an administration that is for the students. They are concerned with bridging the communication gap that we all experience. This has been shown by the organi- zation of wrap sessions which many students, teachers, and administrators have attended. They have gone a long way in humanizing our school in such things as dress codes, school priorities, and school functions. Staff members work together with students in many areas. They have helped out with newspaper work, annual staff, and with clubs and organizations. Our school board, superintendent, and principals, reflect their concern for students by working long hours to develop a system of education which will put Castle Rock as one of the leaders in American schools and not a follower. We are also proud of the Castle Rock community, one which 'll listen to roblems of its young people and also do W1 P something about them. This concern for youth and education has been shown in their support of the school and its programs ,af Maia Pam Swanson High School Secretary. Left: Evelyn Garrison High School Secretary. They have young ideas and are willing to con- sider changes suggested by students. To the surprise of the student body, members of our faculty entertained us with a Charlie Brown skit at our pep assembly before Hal- loween. They volunteer about 20 minutes after each day to teach mini classes. The following are a few mini classes available to the students of Castle Rock High: speed reading, slide rule, bridge, printing, and creative writing. In addition to mini classes, Castle Rock now has a Vocational Educa- tion program which extends the classroom into the community. For these reasons and many more, we are proud of our faculty. X The Homecoming Bonfire sign 5 1 wu- Homecoming festivities were high- lighted by the theme As The Years Go By and the Junior Bonfire. Al- though the October 16th Bonfire was smaller than those in the past years, it successfully created the spirit neces- sary for our victory over Ridgefield. Excitement soared with the final score 44-O. The half time entertainment began with Coronation of the queen, Connie I-Iauge. Her court consisted of Senior class princess, Kathy Fowler, Sophomore Princes, Kim Hauge, and Freshman princess, Denise Gill. Fol- lowing the coronation of the queen, the class and club floats were presented Each float conveyed the theme in its own way. First place went to the Sen- ior class float. FFA received second place, and the Sophomore class float ran third. The Homecoming Dance which featured the fantastic band, Lawe, ended the weekend's activities. These things combined made Home- coming one of the most memorable events of the year. SADIE HAWKI NS Daisy May I? was the theme of this year's Sadie Hawkins dance. The couples came garbed in hillbilly fashion or whatever they felt like The annual tolo was sponsored by the F. I-l.A. , one of their moneymaking pi-objects. The dance was a Well attended success after the victory over Stevenson of 30-8, securing the Trico League Championship. This spirit carried over into the the dance. MarryinSam was on hand to tie the knot for many fun-loving couples. The popular band, Lawe, returned to add to the success of the night. Team celebrates after championship game. Couples enjoy dancing to the music of the Lawe. n!uqq The traditional Sadie Hawkins dance was held in the multipurpose room Couples crowd on to the floor during slow dance. fix? A very successful egg rally provided the funds fbr several projects. The club is sponsoring a ten year old girl in Italy. Toys were collected at Christmas for the kids in Longview placement homes. Every- one isdanxiously awaiting SWIRL. The club plans to eat in an international dinner aboard a clipper ship, however, we are still awaiting for our ship to come in. Mr. Ray has the floor during a student council meeting STUDENT COUNCIL The main goal of Student Council this year was to become more effective and more active. Student Council gained the support of many students by changing the dress code to an open code Where girls were allowed to Wear pants and jeans, and hair was no longer a problem for boys. Besides handling the small problems involved with student govern- ment, several committees Were set up. One for checking into Student Council operated candy machines and one which set up the Christmas Litter Campaign. The Bi-cameral system, or 2 hour system is being used on a trial basis. Plans for the future are: a new voting system for electing A. S.B. officers, perhaps a judicial system run by the studenis, and making recommendations for next years governing body so their govern- ment can be even stronger and more active. ANNUAL It takes a lot of time, talent, and temperament to make any yearbook There were many hours of valuable free time given up, many care fully thought ideas left unused, and definitely a great deal of sweat and tears devoted to the production of this annual. But with the determination of the staff they eventually made that final dead line. RALLEY SQUAD The 1970-71 Rally Squad has had an active year buying oranges for the foot- ball team, cheering the basketball team on, helping to win the sportsmanship trophy at jamboree and preparing pep assemblies. Cheerleading takes a great deal of time and effort. The squad has put forth a lot of work practicing songs and yells and it's been a fun and reward- ing experience. Freshmen cheerleaders inspire athletes at every game. But with the likes of returning lettermen Bruce Williams, Duane Grothen and Leon Gaze, and transfers Dennis Brown and Gary Meade, this shortage was easily overcome. Led by the blocking of the line, backs, Dan Lam, Larry Bailey, Tony Bailey, and jim Barker, were able to pick up large gains. Aided by the protection of the line, and the good hands of Larry Bailey, Dan Cline and Bill Pomeroy, quarterback Bill Nikolaus was able to complete 477 of his good passes for good yardage and several touchdowns. Bruce Williams, Dan Lam, Duane Grothen, Bill Nikolaus, Larry Bailey, and place kicker jeff Wall all earned Trico Honors. The Rockets began their season slowly with a narrow victory over Winlock and a tie with Rainier. Then followed an easy Win over Illwaco, and a narrow victory over White Pass. The Rockets grabbed a share of the Trico League with rela- tively easy victories over White Salmon, Ridgefield, and Woodland. Then followed a narrow 9-8 win over Washougal in the last seconds of the game. The Rockets won their first Trico Crown since 1963, with a crushing 30-8 victory over the Stevenson Bulldogs. This was good enough for a tie with Cathlamet for first place in Trico League. Then we went on to take a disappointing 6th place in district but it still earned the privilege to go to state. FRESHMEN BASKETBALL With a record of two wins and 10 losses, the Freshman basketball team had a disappointing season. But in another aspect, the team showed great potential. Coach Gary Swansons team was an inexperienced club. Three of the top six players had never played Upper Elementary ball and were playing Basketball for the first time. WRESTLING 1971 This year's wrestling season was a successful one with the team taking second in league, record in district, and third in state. Castle Rock sent five wrestlers to state and produced two state champions, Dan Cline and Clark Gardner. The wrestlers worked hard and deserved their wins. Coach Patton said that many of the wrestlers who didn't get any prizes were just as hard working as anyone else on the team. He feels that anyone who worked hard for the team and stayed with it the entire season, is de- serving of his fellow students respect. M Q: y UNDERCLASSMEN UNI ORS Leaders Come From Rocket Ranks As Juniors, we automatically become major participants in all school activities. We begin to realize- that responsibility plays a big part in our lives. The Junior Bonfire turned out to be less traditional, but a tremendous success. We did our part to ignite the spirit that reigned over Homecoming. We worked at selling concessions at home games in order to raise money for our junior Prom to be held in the spring and for our Senior year. -M, as - V ,M-.. ,,, ..,. ,,. ,V.Vkk , W g, ' Q 45 23-zair. 1. We just couldn't seem to get it all together. We experienced the usual harrassments by the upperclassmen, expecially the Seniorsg whose favorite tricks were to put us on top of the vending ma- chines and dangling us from the balconies. At least we didn't have to go through an initiation, although there were a few personal initiations that slipped past the View of the faculty.
