4 C.P. Flies Over the Eagles The Castle Park Trojans proved that they had the makings of a number one team as they downed the Granite Hills Eagles 21-18. Greg Gomez ran for 51 yards to score 6 points. Sophomore Raul Cards kick was good. Granite Hills determinedly scored two touchdowns. Ar the half, the score was the Eagles 12, Trojans 7. Within the first three minutes of the third quarter, George Romero threw a 39 yard touchdown pass to Billie Iapala. Caro's kick was good. Early in the fourth quarter Granite Hills scored a touchdown to lead: 18-14. Two minutes were left on the clock when Romero's quarterback sneak made the winning touchdown. The dramatic finale: Castle Park 21 g Granite Hills 18. Colts Cripple Trojan Horse The Crawford Colts galloped over Castle Park's Trojan Horse as the gridmen were defeated 24-15. C.P.'s first touchdown and extra point came in the first quarter. Crawford retalliated by scoring two touchdowns with both P.A.T.'s being good, making the score 14-7 at halftime. Midway through the fourth quarter Crawford scored a full goal, followed by seven points when there was 1:10 left on the clock. The Trojan eleven were not to be outdone, and with one second to go in the game Keith Thompson pulled down a thirty-six yard touchdown pass by Arana, followed by a two-point conversion which was made good by Caro. The Castle Park Trojans went down in defeat to the Crawford Colts with a score of 24-15. League Opener Proves Upset The Trojans opened up the 1974 Metropolitan League with a stinging 13-7 loss at the hands of the Mar Vista Mariners. It was a slow-scoring game in which Castle Park was not working together as a team. The only scoring done in the first half was by the Mariners. Two touchdowns and a kick that was good made 13 points for the Imperial Beach team. There was no action in the third quarter. Greg Gomez made the only Trojan touchdown of the game during the fourth quarter. Gomez ran the ball for 23 yards: the kick by Raul Caro was good. TOP: Coach Dawson shows concern. MIDDLE: Bob McCurdy getting ready to make his cut upfield against Mar Vista. BOTTOM: Sheldon Powell and Willy Young deflect pass away from Granite Hills receiver. Troy Conquers Sparta Tradition was broken as Troy conquered the Spartans 28-6 in Swift Stadium. Scoring was opened in the first quarter by Romero, with a 13 yard and a 35 yard run. Both PAT's were good. In the second quarter, CP scored with a pass of 37 yards to Thompson. Caro's kick proved good. Chula Vista also scored a touchdown, making the halftime score 21-6. Third quarter action began as Romero threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Arana, with a good PAT by Caro. With the score at Z8-6, the fourth quarter was scoreless for both teams. Castle Park proved that in a new decade, old traditions are sometimes discarded, and Chula Vista found out, as they were slaughtered on OUR field. Trojans Let Devils Burn Castle Park proudly roasted Sweetwater in this game that matches two arch-rivals of the Metro League. In the last 51 seconds of the fourth quarter, Romero threw a 35 yard pass to lapala to score a last minute touchdown. The scors read: Castle Park 12, Sweetwater 8, and now was an upsetting loss for the Devils. CP started out hot against the Devils, as Caro kicked 2 field goals With the score 6-0, the two teams battled through the second quarter. Sweetwater was able to score with a 30 yard pass thrown by Schrader to Dunn. Their two point conversion was good and the Devils led 8-6 at the half. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Devils still held the lead. Though the score did not show it at this time, CP was slaughtering Su-Hi on the field. CP Victorious Over Aztecs The Aztecs fell as the Trojans were victors with a score of 24-7. They were alowed only one score during the entire game, which was a 34 yard pass from Montgomeryis Karnes to Bennet. lVIcCurdy scored six points with a 14 yard run in the first quarter. Caro's PAT was successful. CP scored again on a 33 yard run by McCurdy in the second quarter. The extra point was good. The score at the half was 14-7, in favor of Troy. CP added three points to its total with a Caro field goal. The final score of the game came with a 12 yard pass from Arana to Gomez, with Carols toe working again for the extra point. TOP: Gomez catches a pass for long yardage against the Spartans. MIDDLE: Cheerleaders show approval as Cards extra point splits the uprights. BOTTOM: McMillan shows disapproval as he comes up to assist on the play. OPPOSlTE PAGE: TOP: Gomez stops Aztec for short gain, as Etchells comes up to assist. MIDDLE: Marmallejo stops Aztec, as Shenkle and Ford look on. TOP RIGHT: Sweeties pursue Iapala as he outraces them for the winning touchdown. BOTTOM: Defense dumps Schrader for 10 yard loss.
