Other classes from other years established the traditions that we have built our student life upon. We gladly welcomed alumni to Homecoming 1973, where beauty reigned supreme. Athletics play, an important role at Castle Park because it is through their successful competitive events along with the Drama Department, Speech Team, and Band's performances Castle Park gains its distinctive, respected name. All phases of sports are actively involved in league competition, and the Trojan name always finds its way to the top. U XJ az U GQ J cp f XX QV LO' fi' in 5 X .-1? 'av 1 ii -il? ' 4 4 M 'EST , -x 3? Cella Cotazzi, and Maria Jose Cabrera, came from Argentina and visited our school for two weeks. They left with experiences they could never have at home, and an insight into what high school is all about in the States. l believe that it is important for a person to expand their lives into the world outside their own schools and home. It is through experience that a person grows. . stated Robin Carman, AFS exchange student from Cabrill S.H.S. in Lompoc, California. Celia Cotazzi, from Argentina, said that she likes CP a lot, because all the different people talk to her and they are very kind and the teachers also. All of them noted that athletics play a big part in school life, while at home athletic competition is only extra-curricular. Private schools dominate in Argentina, and all subjects on their schedules are required. Maria noted that teens usually drive only motorcycles in Argentina, and smoking is permitted with parent's consent. They visited all over the United States, and were able to see the different cultures that lie within our nations boundaries, and they took home with them a beginning of an understanding for a different way of life. C.P.'s first touchdown and extra point came in the first quarter. Crawford retalliated by scoring two touchdowns with both P.A.T.'s being good, making the score 14-7 at halftime. Midway through the fourth quarter Crawford scored a full goal, followed by seven points when there was 1:10 left on the clock. The Trojan eleven were not to be outdone, and with one second to go in the game Keith Thompson pulled down a thirty-six yard touchdown pass by Arana, followed by a two-point conversion which was made good by Caro. The Castle Park Trojans went down in defeat to the Crawford Colts with a score of 24-15. League Opener Proves Upset The Trojans opened up the 1974 Metropolitan League with a stinging 13-7 loss at the hands of the Mar Vista Mariners. It was a slow-scoring game in which Castle Park was not working together as a team. The only scoring done in the first half was by the Mariners. The outcome of the CP-BV encounter cost Castle Park the Metro Championship, losing it by a tie, which counts for one-half of a game. Trojans Stab Lancers Hilltop had high hopes of defeating the Troians, but their ideas were put to rest as Troy scored a sound 24-6 defeat over the Lancers. Spirit was up, and the game got going as Gomez ran for a first quarter touchdown. The P.A.T. was made by Caro. The halftime score was 10-0, as Raul Caro kicked a field goal for three points. In the fourth quarter, McCurdy scored six points, and Scott Bunny received a 9 yard pass thrown by Romero. Both of Caro's P.A.T's proved good. The final score was 24-6, and was a fitting Way to conclude Spirit week. McCurdy Breaks Records Against Marian The Crusaders died a 40-0 defeat as the Trojans shone in all their glory. Robert McCurdy stood out as he broke four school records in a single evening. They are as follows: He rushed for 171 yards against Marian, scored thirty points against the Crusaders, carried the ball 37 times, and rushed a total 1182 yards in 195 carries for 9 games. As Castle Park ended the 1973 Metro season, they looked to the CIF play-offs, and another victory. OPPOSITE PAGE: TOP LEFT: Frank Ford blocks pass attempt by Marian. P Places Second in Metro and Trojans Buzz Hornets On the muddy field of Aztec Bowl, Troy stopped the Lincoln Hornets with a score of 17-2. ln the first quarter the action was purely defensive with both teams holding fast. As the first quarter ended scoreless, second quarter action found Troy with the ball deep in their own territory. lapala was ready to punt when the snap from the center went over his head to give the Hornets a safety and two points. Towards the end of the second quarter C.P. started a drive down to the 11 yard line. Raul Caro then kicked a Z7 yard field goal to put the Trojans ahead at the half, 3-2. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Robert McCurdy went highstepping through the Lincoln defense for a total of 32 yards to score a TD. Raul Caro's kick was good and CP led 10-2. DeSaracho intercepted a Lincoln pass and ran it back 56 yards for a touchdown. Caro's kick was good, and the game closed with Castle Park 17, Lincoln 2. CP Loses in Comedy of Errors The Kearny-Castle Park game got off to a slow start, with both teams matching wits to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first quarter. Castle Park took over the second quarter at the 20 yard line, after lVlcCurdy was thrown for a three yard loss. Quarterback john Arana attempted a reverse to Keith Thompson who fumbled, Kearnyls Darling recovered it. This was the beginning of the fumbles which eventually lost the game for Castle Park. Four downs later Means, of Kearny, fumbled it to CP's DeSaracho, who recovered it at the Kearny 34 yard line. Castle Park drove down to the Kearny 12, only to have McCurdy fumble an Arana hand-off. The fumble filled second quarter ended a O-O tie. Kearny scored in the third quarter with a touchdown pass for six points. Following an exchange of fumbles and a CP punt, Kearny was on their own 31 yard line. Kearny scored again with a Norcross touchdown. The fourth quarter was scoreless. Castle Park lost to Kearny because of fumbles in a tragic comedy of errors, and so the 1973 Trojan football season was brought to a close.
