viii six-S D E ECI-l ll-ll-IE importance of training in public speech, the use of the spoken word, admits of no argument. Not satisfied with the training in oral English which is a part of every course in that department, the school offers opportunity for both class worlc and private lessons to those interested. There are few expression teachers in the country better qualified than Mrs. Rousseau, who has had broad experience both as teacher and performer. One of the most talented readers in the South, she frequently entertains the cadets. Capt. Ralph Donnell coaches the debate teams. Interest in this line of worlc is growing by leaps and bounds. Our teams won the Cumberland University Debate Tournament and met some ten or a dozen schools in dual debates. The first Mid-South Debate Tournament was held at Castle Heights this spring. We believe strongly in debating and consider it one of the most helpful activities in which a boy can take part. AND MUSIC MRS. THE STAFF OF THE SCHOOL PAPER, THE CAVALIER CAMP IE HE Academy campus is a community teeming with such a variety of activities that every boy finds some- thing of interest, some way in which he may contribute his bit to the life of the school. Musical organizations, band, orchestra, and glee clubs afford an outlet for the musically inclined and add materially to the pleasure of all the cadets. Stamps, photography, model plane con- struction all have their devotees. One of the most active organizations on the Hilltop is the Heights Y. This group of boys functions much as a school service club and membership is by invitation. Tts weekly meet- ings are held on Sunday nights and are planned and conducted usually by the boys themselves, though an outside spealcer may be brought in on occasion. The project in which this group is interested at present is construction of a club house for cadets and visitors. They also sponsor the Dug-Out, which is the recrea- tion centre of the Academy. Located in the basement of Tngram Hall, this room has a half dozen ping-pong DAIZT SEVEN US ACTIVITIES T571 tables, numerous tables for chess, checlcers, dominoes, and other games. The Monogram Club is a new organization on the campus. Composed of the wearers of the school letters its purpose is to promote the school spirit in general and to support all the school activities. In conjunction with the gymnasium Leaders Club, the Monogram Club is fostering the ideal of all Castle Heights athletic teams, Victor or vanquished, always the gentleman! The Academy has movie and sound equipment, which is brought into play on Saturday nights for the enter- tainment of those so inclined-some of the best motion pictures have been given. Budding journalists have ample opportunity to de- velop their talents in the columns of the weelcly news- paper, the Cavalier. This paper has won ranking as one of the best in the country and reflects much credit upon its staff and faculty advisor.
