M W VW FOREWORD I would like to introduce you, students, teachers, and friends of C.V.C.S. to the 1958 Valley View. This book is the cumulation of much time and effort on the part of the yearbook staff, time and effort cheerfully given in hope that the pages within will recall to you in future years pleasant memories of this past school year. The 1958 annual has still another purpose. When the time for you, the students, to depart from this hallowed institution arrives, you will have the challenge of living up to the standards set forth by past graduates of C.V.C.S. You will want to express the very best of yourself from whatever position you occupy in society. We hope that the C.V.C.S. tradition captured within the covers of this book will serve as a reservoir of inspiration to help you to maintain these standards. We further hope that in addition to pleasant memories the hook will remind you of goals set in youth and that you will be encouraged to strive for their accomplishment. Our first production, '4Almost Summerf, was a play involving a typical family situation treated in a very light and humorous manner. Out of the Frying Panf' our second production, was a Broadway comedy depicting the lives of several aspiring young actors and actresses and their attempts to break into show business. Our dramatic career was culminated in The White Sheep of the Familyf' which was a satire on crime concerning a very respectable family of crooks who desired to be called self-employed individualists. C ASS CDF '59 JUNIOR CLASS The Junior Class 559 is doubled in size and especially in noise compared to last year's Junior Class. Their first money making project for this year was the maddening sale of Christmas cards. As for their second dra- matic production they put on Girl Crazy. a play depicting the normal Junior lioy. This proved to he another oscar-winning pro- duction. After much self sacrifice on the part of all, the class rings were gladly re- ceived. As is the tradition, the Junior Class feted the Senior Class at a very festive Prom, which Climaxed our activities for the school year. HI-Y AND TRI-HI-Y To initiate new members with a good send off, the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y officers led the prospective members through a treacherous 'ghost walk.' Survivors of this incident totaled approximately 44-no fatalities -which made up the year's active membership, includ- ing fortunate officers. No time was wasted in setting these fortunates to work. Commencing the yearis activities. Thanksgiving Baskets of tasty foods were prepared and distributed to two needy families in Sinclairville. Still feeling that ambitious streak. some members-willingly-sold refreshments at athletic games to send our 'honor- ablc't ?l Tri-lli-Y President. Cinny Privateer, and Hi-Y Secretary, Ronnie Josephson, to the New York State Hi-Y Conference in Albany. Both were appointed to notable committees yet the main comment which they gave as a report was, 6'We had a ball. The Y.M.C.A. World Service received a contribu- tion of twenty-five hard-earned dollars from the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Club of good ole C.V.C.S. Now, to relax. after all this physical and mental stress, the Club launched a Spring Basket Ball to cele- brate the end of basketball season. On March 23 the cheerleaders and players were the honored guests at this real hep semi-formal dance. To tunes of an eight- piece orchestra, everyone wasted no fun or energy. It can easily be tacked with the headline of a areal suc- cess. For Holy Week, the clubs held pre-Easter services the first part of each morning. These services have be- come a noteworthy institution of the clubs as has the Character Awards which were presented to two Seniors with outstanding character. This Character Award was presented at Commencement in June. The Hi-Y and Tri Hi-Y are proud of these two services and hope to continue each. Well, it ,makes common Hi-Y sense that every year should be closed with a really big 'bangi-'splash' in this case-therefore, they naturally adjourned the Hi-Y year to a picnic and swimming party at Chautauqua Lake. What fun! I l It is believed that this year has truly been a suc- cess in enjoyment and work, and with no fatalities! .ludy Till Tri-Hi-Y Secretary t l WASHINGTON L Z? WYASHINGTON TRIP has been the tradition in the past at Cassadaga Valley, our Senior class made a journey to our nation's Capitol, Washington D. C. During our five-day sojourn, we spent the greatest portion of our time on guided tours to the impressive sights of the city. Of course, we did not neglect recreation in our pursuit of know- ledge for we included a moonlight boatride on the Potomac, a concert and a visit to a well-known night- club. ,X MAGAZINES PICTURES PLAY To make this trip possible, we engaged in many fund-raising ventures. We inaugurated this year's campaign with our magazine sale, which proved to be the most successful ever to be carried on in this school. Our next undertaking was picture sales. This was indeed a service to the students of C.V.C.S. for they received beautiful pictures at a very low price. The most important of our activities was, of course, our play. The success of our Washington trip lies mainly in the competent guidance which our advisors gave us throughout our high school years. Our parents, too, were also instrumental in accomplishing our ultimate goal. A fx l1fT 'llll11: X M , fi n IWW .-f,-',.f:f-if-..-. l l ,1 Ai-ii..---+f gi'.5 ..g, , Nz- -1- N-I - . ,.' I 'X K 1. From all known reports, the dance was a success and the F.H.A. decoration- weary teams received simply pumpkins and pumpkins of favorable comments on the decorations. Just to be out of the ordinary, the F.H.A. adopted a new recruiting system for members. The club is divided into two sections, the F.H.A. and Junior F.H.A. The honorable t?l Homemaking III girls compose the senior group while the industrious Homemaking II homemakers are the Junior F.H.A. members. Now, isn't that different? . . . it is for a C.V. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Cassadaga Valley Chapter of the F.F.A. have a well rounded program this year which includes super- vised farming programs, co-operation, community serv- ice, leadership, earnings and savings, conduct of meet- ings, scholarship and recreation. F.F.A. members are following supervised farming programs which total in value to nearly 318,000 This sum represents the total of all members projects. One activity carried on by the F.F.A. this year in the field of community service was a soil testing pro- gram in conjunction with the G.L.F. Members took soil samples on various farms as requested by the farmers. Another was the annual F.F.A. Father-Son Banquet, held this year at Centraila Grange. In the past, the F .F .A. has visited Charlotte Center and Sin- clairville Grange. As part of the co-operation and recreation pro- gram the F.F.A. has held a dance with the F.H.A. Leadership training is a large part of the F.F.A.'s program. One of our Chapter members, Douglas Waters was elected state F.F.A. Reporter at the State Conven- tion attended by several chapter members. Doug and Monte Okerlund received the Empire Farmer Award which is given to only 22 of the boys in the state. Bill Carlson won the state amateur contest. Several boys from our chapter attended the State Leadership Training school held at the State F.F.A. camp. All the chapter officers attended the county leadership train- ing school. Two chapter members, Monte Okerlund and Bob Johnson, our Treasurer and President are also County officers. Bob is county Vice-President and Monte is county Treasurer. Our chapter has won and placed in many judging contests this year. At the Southwestern New York Dairy Judging Tour, C.V.C.S. placed second. At Alfred, our chapter received a silver award in Dairy, Poultry and Crop judging. At the county fair our chapter took first place in the poultry judging. Chapter members will also attend the Farm and Home week Program at Cornell University and the next state F.F.A. Convention. At the weekly meetings, which are very well attended, we have learned many of the clas- sic and modern popular dance steps. These meetings were extremely enjoyable and were beneficial in causing an increased participation in the dances held at our school. Credit should go especially to Miss Childs, whose kindness and guidance made the club the success that it is. The club thanks, too, the many teachers. that de- voted their time as chaperones.
