Life in a democratic country 1m poses the responsibility on us citizens to be educated to be as well educated as our abilities and finances will per mit Democracy can survive in a coun try only when the citizens can think can reason and draw conclusions after weighing the facts High school must not mean the end to learning and study If college is possible take advantage of it by all means However there are many ways of self education for the person with ambition In the past some people tried to gain an education so that they would not have to work so hard An easy life should not be our aim Rather 1t should be to serve our country and fel low man better so that our democratic in a world threatened by cultural dark ness E Berndt emu., We hear much about democracy in our daily life, in our newspapers, magazines, over the radio, on televi- sion and in school classes. We are very anxious to accept the privileges of the democratic way of life, freedom of press, religion, a voice in govern- ment. We hear considerably less about the responsibilities of the individual necessary to maintain this democratic way of lifep participation in govern- ment, the respect of- the rights of mi- nority groups, participation in the eco- nomic life. We are in a period of na- tional crisis.
