The Open Door it Since iTs OrganizaTiOn as an elemenTary school in l862, Cass has been acclaimed .or :Ts progressiveness and useTulness. lT has long been a school devoTed To Train- ing noT only in maThemaTics, science and grammar buT in everyday pracTical siTua- Tions. BuilT on land dOnaTed To DeTroiT in l860 by Lewis Cass, The school regularly educaTes l3,000 people. For over TOrTy years, Cass was an academic school. ln l907 due To The eTTorTs OT Wales C. lvlarTindal, The Technical branch was sTarTed. The branch was locaTed on The Third Tloor OT whaT is now Commerce High School. There were originally ll0 sTudenTs and nine TaculTy members. As indusTry grew in DeTrOiT so did Cass Techni- cal l-ligh School. Businessmen and parenTs began To realize how advanTageous a Technical school was. ATTer many Tund raising campaigns and several seT backs, The presenT building was opened and gradually occupied in OcTober, l922. Since Then Cass has conTinued To grow and expand. The presenT day school sTu- denT body numbers over 4,000 pupils, and There is a Taculry OT aT leasT 300. The school has eighT sTOries in which are locaTed classrooms and labOraTories plus an audiTOrium wiTh a seaTing capaciTy OT 3,000 and a lunchroom which daily serves over 5,000 people. Cass is unique, in ThaT, iT is The only Technical school in DeTrOiT and one OT The Tew in The UniTed STaTes. The school has been idenTiTied wiTh scholasTic accOmplishmenTs, and OTTen graduaTes obTain jobs because OT The TacT They did aTTend Cass. Many OT Cass' graduaTes have gone On TO become leaders in Their communiTies and in Their respecTive lines OT work. ln keeping wiTh The TradiTion OT success, Cass sTudenTs are given every opporTuniTy TO learn and develop skills and apTiTudes. They are given The opporTuniTy To reap a wealTh OT knowledge and To become leaders as Those beTore have done. We, as Cass sTudenTs, should exTOl The meriTs OT Our school and be proud Thar we are CassiTes. You may Think ThaT This is a diTTiculT Thing To do. ATTer all, Cass dOesn'T have a winning TOOTball Team, and The school isn'T as beauTiTul as iT could be. Cass, however, is more Than being TriumphanT on The TOOTball field and 'surTace beauTy. lT is a symbol OT hope Tor TuTure generaTiOns, Tor where There is learning and educa- Tion There is Treedom and democracy. You may also Teel ThaT Cass is no longer an academic leader. IT This is True, The degradaTion can be Traced direcTly To The sTudenT body. As explained by Mr. R. R. BaumgarTner, assisTanT principal, Cass has an enTrance requiremenT OT a C average inTelligence raTe, and sTudenTs are To mainTain a C average in Their academic courses. BUT There are many sTudenTs who sluTT OTT Their iob OT geTTing an educaTion and iusT barely pass Their classes. Many sTudenTs wanT The glory OT aTTending Cass buT do noT wanT To work and puT TorTh The eTTorT necessary To aTTain a measure OT success. MOST OT The failures aT Cass are due To lack OT inTeresT noT lack OT abiliTy. TO These sTudenTs who are lowering our school's presTige we should direcT an appeal To sTand up and grow up and aTTempT To obTain Tor our school The admiraTion and respecT iT deserves. Bad as iT may seem, The picTure is noT enTirely dismal. Over sixTy per cenT OT Cass' graduaTes enTer college. Cass sTudenTs are awarded as many scholarships and Phi BeTa Kappa cerTiTicaTes as any oTher school. Some sTudenTs who enTer Cass wiTh a C average Tind The compeTiTion and pace Too diTTiculT Tor Them. Because OT This, Teachers are Taced wiTh The problem OT eiTher holding back some OT Their sTudenTs or increasing The diTTiculTy Tor oThers. This siTuaTion is noT Tair To The Teacher or sTudenTs: so in an eTForT To remedy iT, a recom- mendaTion has been made ThaT The enTrance requirernenT average be raised To a C plus. The quesTion wheTher The sTandards and enTrance requiremenTs OT Cass will be raised is sTill undecided, buT one Thing is cerTain. IT is The TacT +ha+ Cass will con- Tinue To give To Those sTudenTs who are sincere The besT possible Training so ThaT They will be OT use To Their counTry, Their communiTy and Themselves.
