Atllninisltraiio ... ii 4- 1- '. .,---Q. - f N X i X ll JOSEPH G. woLBER oRviL F. HEFT X Principal Ass't Principal The appearance of another Triangle announces another substantial increase in the contribution of Cass Technical High School to the man- power needs of business, industry, fine arts, science, medicine. Thus Cass fulfills its purpose in a manner not even fully conceived by its founders during the formative years. With the return of the ninth grade in 1956 came the promise of still larger graduating classes, with consequent greater influence in the life and welfare of Detroit's people and activities. To you, the members of the T958 classes, our sincere congratula- tions. May the lessons you learned serve you in your careers, guide you in your civic duties, nurture your continued growth as individuals and as fathers and mothers. May the friendships begun at your Alma Mater be enduring. May you enioy the success that has attended the graduates of other years. These blessings we wish for you in abundant measure. JAMES POLKINGHORN James Polkinghorne was assigned to Cass Technical High School as cl General Maintenance Employee in September, 1922. He retired December 31, 1957, after more than thirty-five years af Continuous service to Cass Technical High School. Mr. Polkinghorne's training and experience leaned more especially to wood work, and, therefore, his headquarters were to be found in the mill room situated in the Cass Tech basement. But his service to the school went far beyond the facilities of the mill room. There was scarcely any maintenance task that he would.-1't undertake, Requisitions for service were important, to be sure, but Jim , as we all called him, did not let the lack of a requisition stand in his way when an emergency was at hand. His conscientious approach to the handling of lumber, and to the use of his hours at Cass, was most commendable. His separation from Cass by retirement represents a distinct loss. Mr. Campbell, who taught night school class with Jim, and who knew him intimately, refers to him in the wards cooperation personified -a worthy tribute indeed! He has our hearty wishes for a long and happy retirement. TRAVER C. SUTTON Mr. T. C. Sutton graduated from AuSable High School in 1907. In the fall of 1907 he entered Adrian College where he spent the next four years. He graduated in 1911. While at college, he received 12 letters in sportsp 4 in Baseball, 4 in Basketball and 4 in Football. He was captain of the basketball team the year they won the championship CMIAAJ. Mr. Sutton came to Cass Tech in 1921 as coach of the football team, He coached for the following three years and had teams that were runners-up for the championship. In 1924, he became a regular teacher in the Physics department of Cass Tech. He received his M.A. degree from the University of Detroit and also Battle Creek College. For several years he taught at the University of Detroit, After 47 years of teaching in the public schools he retired. He is now teaching Physics in Evansville College, Evansville, Indiana. lt was a great lass to the science department and entire school when he left Cass Tech. It will be difficult to fill his place. We wish him the greatest success in his new position. JOSEPH G. WOLBER JOSEPH G. WOLBER, after forty-eight years of teaching and school administrative positions, retired July 1, 1958. He served as a curriculum head of the departments of Electrical, Mechanical Arts, Auto-aero and Architectural Building from 1923 to August, 1930. During his 21-year absence from Cass Tech, he served as assistant principal at Northwestern, followed by a principalship at Chadsey. In September 1951 he returned home , to serve as principal of Cass Technical High School, the school where he embarked upon his teaching career in 1916. Mr. Wolber is a native Detraiter, as he was born an the east side and received his elementary education in St. Joseph's School and obtained his secondary school training in Ammendale Academy of Maryland. Before entering college he obtained a certificate to teach elementary schoal grades in the New York area for nearly six years. While at the University of Michigan he earned his Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts degrees in electrical engineering and physics. After a short period in industry he received the call which brought him to Cass Tech. In the Spring of 1916. Mr. Wolber was instrumental in the promotion and organization of several curriculums while here at Cass and had the pleasure of directing the celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Cass Tech, He is looking forward to his retirement that he may have more time to spend with his wife in traveling, with his three sons and daughter, grandchildren and also with his hobby in wood-working. Mr. Wolber was not only a great inspiration to the many thousands of students as a teacher, but also to many of the teachers who worked under his direction. We extend ta him our very best wishes for many years of good health and happiness. WILLIAM ZERBER Mr. William Zerber has taught at Cass Technical High School for the past thirty six years. He has been a most sincere and loyal teacher to Cass and to the Electrical Department. Mr. Zerber was very instrumental in the early development of electrical courses, procedures, and programs. In the past he has served as key man of the Schoolmen's Club, and was very active as a member of the Dramatics Club of the Cass Technical High School, that provided the students and the faculty with many hours of pleasant entertainment. Bill was one of the original members to organize and serve as president of the Benjamin Comfort Club. Mr. Zerber has been very successful with our younger students. His unending patience, his fatherly advice, his wise counsel and professional attitude has helped more students to mend their ways and seek to do right than any other teacher in the Department. His oft repeated admonition, I want respect-not fear will ring a bell in the minds of many students for years and years to come. His kindness, gentleness, courteausness, and unselfish attitudes are among the reasons why he has always worked with our beginning classes. Mr. Zerber is a veteran of World War I, where he served in the Infantry as an observer until he was wounded and sent back to the United States. For his outstanding performance in the line of duty. he was awarded the Purple Heart. At the present, Mr. and'Mrs. Zerber intend to travel and spend some time in Caseville at their cottage as well as in Detroit. We will all miss Bill , but we will wish him the best of health and happiness. We hope that in his travels he will occasionally find his way back home to Cass Tech. J-., has -.-...X
