Nature deals out generous portions of physical strength, mental curiosity and moral courage to the growing teen-ager. The enthusiasm of youth needs only to be channeled to produce superlative results. The story of the high school years is admirably told in picture-book form in each high school yearbook. That is the real purpose of the publication. The efforts of the yearbook staff are directed toward one goal! The finest and most complete record of the current roster of pupils, and more especially of the January and June 1955 graduates, that the editors and other staff members can produce. To them and their sponsor, our thanks and appreciation for a job well done. A job that will be treasured by each graduate over the years to come. J. G. LOUIS E. .TENNINGS Mrs. Ford retired from teaching at Cass in June 1954. She joined the Cass faculty in September, 1921, after having been granted her Bachelor of Arts degree from Olivet College and having taught University of Grand Rapids and served as acting head of Cass' Social Studies Department for more than ten years. During much of this time Cass was a four year high school. Mrs. Ford had the respect of her students and the affection of her colleagues many of whom have been her close an excellent teacher and a loyal friend who will be greatly missed. MISS DOROTHY SKEWIS Mrs. Sether came to Cass in 1931 to teach the courses in Costume Illustration. Prior to that time she taught high school classes in Saginaw, and for five years she was a com- mercial artist in New York City. She is a graduate of Olivet College, and took her training in fashion at the Traphagan School in New York, where y. Mrs. Sether has always taken a kindly and personal interest in her students, and many of our successful fashion designers and illustrators give credit for their success to her early guidance. Many graduates have kept in close touch with her through the years. White Pigeon, Michigan, her home town, will be Mrs. Sether's location for the future, where she plans to enjoy her hobbies of sewing, reading, and enameled metal work. MISS BERTHA BALLARD Mr. Louis E. Jennings is retiring as a counselor to the science department at the end of this school year. His long and interesting career began when he was a student at Cass Tech in 1909. After he graduated in 1912, he attended the University of Michigan where he obtained his Bachelor degree in Chemistry. Duringthe summers of 1926 through 1928, he completed the necessary courses for a Master degree in Chemistry. Mr. Jennings entered Cass in 1919 after having worked as a chemist for two years at Detroit Graphite and Chrysler Motors. At Cass, he taught Pharmaceutical Math when the pharmacy course was offered. He has also taught Chemistry one through five for 20 years. In 1942, he obtained his present position as a counselor. Many Cassities will long re- member the fine counseling and expert advice he has always offered. Upon his retirement, Mr. Jennings is moving to Miami, Florida, with his family. There he plans to go to the University of Miami where he will take courses in chemistry, physics, biology, and Spanish. He is also planning to teach chemistry at the University on a part time basis. at Clio, Michigan. She received her Master's degree from the friends for three decades. She left Cass with the reputation of MRS. MABEL GOODFELLOW FORD Miss Dorothy Skewis, who has been on a year's leave of absence, is retiring from her position as head of the Cass Art Department. After her graduation from Morningside College, Iowa, Miss Skewis took special work in the field of graphic design at the Art Institute of Chicago. She has devoted 30 years to Cass Technical High School - as a skillful and inspiring teacher, and as a wise and friendly counselor. Miss Skewis is retiring from her Detroit duties, but not from her profession. She is instructing future art teachers at Buena Vista College in her home town - Storm Lake, Iowa. she later joined the facult MRS . BERNADINE SE THER Miss Bertha Ballard retired from Cass in January 1955. She joined the faculty in 1926. She had attended Lewis Institute in Chicago, the University of Michigan, and received her B.A. degree from Wayne University. Miss Ballard taught foods at Cass for many years but she is best known for her teach- ing of Home Nursing, First Aid, and Child Care. During World War II she taught Red Cross First Aid to teachers after school in order that they might qualify for their Red Cross certificates. Recently she has made it possible for high school girls to receive their Red Cross certificates. Miss Ballard was sponsor of the Pre-Nursing Club when its members were all girls planning to enter nurse's training schools. She took the girls to all of our local hospitals and advised them as to their nursing careers. The mark which she made on these girls gs evidenced by her Christmas cards from former students now living all over the United tates. Miss Ballard richly deserves the pleasure of retirement but she will be greatly missed and her place a most difficult one to fill. .3. Cass Technical High School is a very essential part of Detroit. The new Civic Center, the slum clearance pro- jects, and the Expressways all signify a Dynamic Detroit. Our school system, too, has shown great progress. Functional and beautiful new elementary schools and high schools have been built. However, technical training in our city is represented by facilities that were built 34 years ago and which have changed very little since. Looking back over this period of thirty years, it is seen that Cass' scholastic influence on the industrial capability of the city has been tremendous. Now, as ever, the industrial corporations eagerly employ Cass graduates. But, in- dustrial expansion is now even greater than the expansion of the city in general and Cass' facilities are still mainly as they were 30 years ago. The day of the unskilled laborer is over. In the near future, every man and woman will need some essential technical knowledge in order to survive. While the responsibility for providing adequately skilled citizens is that of all the schools of the country, Cass must carry an added burden. Being the only technical school in Detroit, the center of the automobile industry, it is the job of this school to train its students to meet the city's demands. To do this requires an array of curriculums com- parable to leading universities. A graduate of Cass has not been taught only how a process is accomplished, but, also, the explainable and unexplainable reasons for it. He is capable of questioning a common practice and often improving it. He possesses a technical education. For many years Cass has met this constant demand, 34 of them in the present build- ing. In doing so, much outdated equipment has been allowed to remain. The physical state of the building has deteriorated. Conditions exist that hamper the ability of the school to do its job. In order to remedy this situation, an extensive modernization program is being undertaken. Cass Tech has to be ready to meet the increased student enrollments of future years. Only through great costs and sacrifices can this be accomplished. However, it is infinitely wiser to provide the education faculities Cass needs, rather than neglecting these needs and regretting the unavoidable results in future years. Since 1921, when the Cass Technical High School was completed, a minimum of main- tenance work has been done both on the exterior and interior surfaces of the building. The laboratory and shop equipment has only partly been replaced with more advanced and newer tools and facilities. Obviously, something has to be done about these blemishes on Cass' standard. The school building and contents are currently valued at approximately 315,000,000 . To im- prove the building's condition up to the level of a more modern high school with modern facilities, at least 351,500,000 would have to be spent. This, of course, seems like a large amount of money, and it is. Even, though this enormous cost would be offset easily by increased student interest, stimulated by the lighter, better equipped and more cheerful surroundings. Interested students do better, more satisfactory and accurate work. The result would be a generally higher scholarship and citizenship rating among the students, the realization of which would be ideal for any school to achieve. There have been many suggestions made concerning the renovation of the building. Some of them are realistic, practical and downright necessary. Others are quite impos- sible to adopt. First to be started is the new roof now being installed. Construction of an all new machine shop including completely modern lighting and electrical facilities was started June 1. The building shop is being transferred and the course revised. The Cass lunchroom is a major problem in itself. It has been suggested that the tea- chers' lunchroom be moved from the eighth floor to Room 713. The eighth floor space could then be used by Cass' student body as an activity. This solution also would eliminate the problem of split, Study-Lunch hours by providing the additional room necessary for the greater number of students. Another suggestion, often stated and repeated, is the provision of better acoustic properties for the lunchroom. Then, conversation between persons sitting on opposite sides of a table would be possible without sign language and high-pitched screaming. -10- In recent years, the location of shops, drafting rooms and some classrooms has been shifted and re-shifted occasionally. At the present time, many of these rooms are awk- wardly positioned. The shops and laboratories for a certain department should all be on one floor of the building as close together as possible. Therefore, it has been suggested, that the art department vacate Room 647, so that the printing department can put lithograph presses in that room. The art rooms should be grouped on the north side of the building to enable better natural lighting. The ex-boiler room should be renovated, and all the Auto-Aero-Refrigeration shops on the fifth floor would be moved into the space now called the boiler room, leaving the rooms 541-549 to be occupied by another department. Furthermore, renovating the boiler room will provide much needed music rooms. Arifle range is also planned for this space. The moving of the shops would be accompanied by the installment of new facilities and modern equipment as required. Care would be taken to lower the ceiling of those rooms now having exceptionally high ceilings and inadequate lighting. Elsewhere, two drafting rooms capable of holding industrialized equipment will be established. Home Economics will be spaced on two floors. Additions to the department include a power sewing room, a laundry room, and an institution type kitchen. A public address system from the main office to every room is needed. It would pro- tect students from harm and prevent deaths or at least lower the number of people killed. The public address system would speed all types of communications. The design of Cass' stairways is such, that they are similar to chimneys, i.e., they provide an upward air draft. In case of a major fire, the terrific damage to the upper floors of the building and, above all, the large loss of lives can readily be visualized by anyone. To safeguard the student body and faculty of Cass Tech is the most important duty of the school administration. Therefore, it seems necessary, that fire blocks should be built at each floor of each stairway. This relatively slight cost if immediately justified by the protection value of the fire blocks. These changes do not happen from today to tomorrow, so the present student body may not derive many of these benefits. Let no one forget, though, that now is the time to provide a better school for the future students. No one can say, whether tomorrow's Cassite will walk along a beautiful campus and enter a building equally outstanding in appearance, to conduct his studies there. The decisions are up to the administration, faculty, and student body. The student of tomorrow can only enjoy those things planned today. -11- ' 4 I if M-...ummm iw. 1 r -H14 M 1 Qagww ,P in A ,1E,,MA 4 vii, ,W . fm '?z :g,1J J+5'im 135.5 1 M 'W'f MQ, ,hm , if Mfg-L-Lf ez gf elf yf .4 nicms and K, laculy X ,Q ,???W5ViiQ nT5 X A 6 r 5 z,1 'Yiwu h efiiz., I ' F? Our courses give background for such occupations as radio servicing, television servicing, industrial elec- tronics, and electrical maintenance. Our shop work includes construction, installation, and operation of all types of electrical equipment. Graduates of the electrical curriculum find em- ployment as helpers, or preferred apprenticeships in the building trades. Graduates may decide to enter college, in which case, they may enter without exami- nation providing satisfactory grades have been at- tained. Every effort is made to have each student study the local and national electrical codes, become familiar with tools of the trade, work with well-known electri- cal equipment, and be able to make a safe, neat, secure installation of electrical equipment and control devices. pw! 5305 f Y Harold Stormzand . The pre-nursing courses prepare girls to become nurses, physician's and dentist's assistants, and medical tech- nologists. Both courses offer excellent preparation for posi- tions as assistant nurses. Pre-nursing commercial offers training in commercial subjects such as typing and shorthand in addition to the other courses. Biology, chemistry, micro- biology, and physiology and anatomy form the core of this curriculum. Graduates from the institutional foods curriculum often get jobs as dietary aids.Dress design is for girls wishing to specialize in clothing and textiles. - '2?.: 5k 91'if:s,..5 Wax! 1 S- gi 2 is SQ, ti'-3'i' . k.', 1 8305. ,'-' li ii'i Q, V ,iyii .135 ' 5.1 Nut . at , i if P15011 . . This year's football season has been the most successful for Cass in its history. Closing the season with a record of five wins and two losses, the Technicians ended in second position on the East Side. Four of the five wins were games in which the opposing team did not score, which added to the impressiveness of an already suc- cessful record. Adding -to team honors was the selection of three members to the coaches All-City Team. A suitable climax toamemorable season was the nomination of coach Virgil Florea as Sportswriters' Coach of the Year. Beginning the season at Mack Park, the Techmen easily won a third quarter victory over the Southeastern team. Following up witha 26-O win over Northeastern at Wyoming Field, the Techmen showed signs ofthings to come in later games. The next opponents, however, also seemed to have aspirations towards higher things. We were defeated in this contest by Pershing 27-7. The Cass Team then retaliated by defeating Eastern in a shutout game at Jayne Field. The two following games against Northern and Miller ended in defeats of the opposition teams. In the final dramatic game of the season, the Denby team won a narrow victory over Cass, thus ruining our chances of attaining East-Side supremacy. -30- f . The cheer tryouts usually occur in the middle of March. Then all the girls who are interested come up to the 7th floor gym. There the cheerleaders teach the tryouts their jumps and a few of the cheers. They are given three eliminations before they can make the grade. lf they pass all three, they make the team. Usually there are ten girls on the team. After they make the team, they are required to come down twice a week in the summer to learn the rest of the cheers. Then when school starts in the fall, they must come to practice twice a week and be present at all the football and basketball games. The outfit runs about 50 dollars. This includes two sweaters, a reversable skirt, two letters and two pairs of shoes. If while a girl is cheering she gets an E on her report card, she is temporarily dropped from the squad until she can bring her marks up. But it is well worth all the trouble if one can make it. Autographs - 1 Performing Arts Curriculum THE RICH FULL LIFE January 7 recalled the plight of Cynthia Fenwick when it seemed that she would not be able to go to the school dance with Ricky Latham because of her chronic illness. Lou, the kind and understanding mother, allowed her to go in spite of the heavy rain that night. Lawrence, Cynthiats father, had been out for the evening and knew nothing of this. When he came home and found out, a big argument arose. Lawrence argued that Cynthia's health was being endangered, Lou defended her action by stating that this was Cynthia's first big date, owing to her fragile constitution. Cynthia came home from the dance withaterrible cough. Dr. Fenwick, Lawrence's brother Fred, and his wife, Carrie were called in, but they were helpless in combating the fatal fever which followed. However, Lou, imitating her daughter over the phone, invited Ricky over, and the sight of him awakened in Cynthia the will to live. We regret that pictures are not available with .Toan Kablak who played the role of the nurse. Sound was handled by Dick Allman. The entire production was directed by Mrs. Bea Copper of the Performing Arts Department. CYNTHIA: Thank you for the flowers, Ricky. The Triangle has been a group project and no one person or company can be singled out for its contributions. Among those of the student body deserving special credit for the time and talent they have contributed are: Ellen Reitz, assistant editor-in-chief, Sylvia Kosciolek, faculty editor, Elaine Grosso, organization editor, .Tack Clark, home- room editorg Shirley Pekarski, business manager, Gwen McFerran, typistg and the art editors: Eleanor Whalbrink, Rose Lee Alex, and Marilyn Rosenthal. Also Norman Waiter, who helped in collecting material for sports and other sections, merits my thanks. Iwould like to express my gratitude to Hans Herda and Ted Weiswasser for the Dedication. I know I speak for the entire staff in thanking our sponsor, Mr. Arthur Obel, for the guidance, direction, and above all, patience, which he gave generously.
