It is different because instead of the usual 365 days to a year, leap year contains 366 days. Attached to this unique day are various customs and oddities. For example, leap year, by custom, is considered open season for boy hunting, and then there is the man, who after living 40 years, is just celebrating his 10th birthday. All in all leap year, celebrated on the last day of February is traditionally a day of merriment and joviality. Therefore, as 1952 is leap year, the theme of the 1952 Triangle has been centered around leap year and its customs. 1 . :W GN-'CW lk'H.. Table of Contents Administration . . . . Stirton, our former principal, we the seniors of 1951-52 dedicate this page as a small part of our appreciation of his work at Cass. Mr. Stirton was truly a wonderful person, for not only was he big enough to make a good name for Cass, but he was human enough to be a personal friend to everyone, student and teacher alike. Words can hardly tell the measure of good he did for the school, nor how much his departure meant to us. ln Mr. Stirton 's own words, If you scout around in the vacant lot across the street from Cass, you will find a strange damp spot of ground. When analyzed, this spot of earth would show traces of hemoglobin, red and white corpuscles and sodium chloride. This, my sweat and blood, represents my efforts on your behalf to get our Cass athletic field. We feel that this is a perfect word picture of the type of man Mr. Stirton is, and we know that his name, wherever he is, will always be synonymous with progress. Present. . . To Mr. Joseph Wolber, the students of Cass wish to extend a hearty welcome. Many new ideas have been invoked since he has arrived at Cass, many of which are very good. We know that he will help to make Cass an outstanding school forever. Dedication Throughout the years that Cass Technical High School has been in existence, it has achieved an international reputation for superiority in training students to successfully meet the demands of a civilization which daily grows more complex. This reputation has been built by a combination of three factors: good equipment, excellent instruction, and students eager to know the technology of their industrial environment. The students of yesteryear are today the men and women who are the masters of the powerful man-made forces which directly or indirectly influence the life of every human being. The fact that so many Cass graduates have gained these important positions proves that Cass attracts those with the ambition and drive so necessary to success . The achieve- ments attained by past Cass graduates are the incentive to today 's students. The graduates of 1952 leave with training equal or superior to that given by any other high school in the world. During their years at Cass, these students have also contributed to the tradhion of scholarship which is the essence of Cass Tech. It is the fervent hope of every Cass graduate to pass on this tradition so that it may continue to grow and thus to increase the opportunities afforded to all future Cass students. Therefore, to the past, present, and future students of Cass Tech- nical High School, the graduating class of 1952 humbly dedicate this yearbook . C ,M .--,ian 'lr JOSEPH G. WOLBER ORVU-J-E HEFT Principal Assistant Principal GARNER BOWLBY Principal, Summer School Administration The Triangle is one of the oldest and most hallowed of Cass Tech traditions. The story behind the name is lost to pre- sent day pupils, but the name has persisted through the years. The real significance of the Triangle lies in the fact that it is produced by Cass High School pupils, it records the school life of these pupils, their hopes, their joys and sorrows, their friends, their teachers, their lessons, their sports, the ir organizations . It is a treasure-house of the most care-free and the happiest time of life, the high school age. It is my hope that the Triangle of 1952 becomes for you who are graduating the richest source of pleasurable recall of your student days atCass. I hope that the undergraduate marks the current volume as part of a series of three, that record the history of the group with which he is identified. I congratulate the staff whose efforts this yearbook represents. I trust that the Triangle will continue for many years to come as the symbol of Cass tradition. Following her graduation from the University of Michigan, she started teaching in Mt. Pleasant, then spent a year teaching in Port Huron. This was followed by three years experience in drafting at Fenestra Steel Products, after which she returned to her first love-teaching, this time in Detroit. She was assigned to the Mathematics Department at Cass Tech, where she has been one of the popular teachers for more than twenty years. Miss Mueller has always maintained a keen interest in the affairs of mathematics, not only locally but throughout the state. In school math- ematical circles she is known as the author of Geometric Concepts , a text in intuitive geom- try. Currently she is co-author of a geometry text, which is being used in manuscript form at Cass Tech. As her school career ends and new adventure in the field of matrimony beckons, she carries with her the best wishes of all her associates. 'h V lqfvd ' t- Tait.. Ellen Drew Following her graduation from the University of Michigan, she taught ungraded classes in the red-brick building tCass Schoolj which now en- larged houses Commerce High. When the new Cass Technical High School opened in 1921, she joined its faculty as an instructor in mathematics. As an aftermath she was placed in charge of study halls where her wise and friendly guidance touched gently but effectively the lives of thou- sands of Cass students. Mrs. Ellen Drew will ever be remembered by all who have known her as one of Cass Tech's keystones -- a gracious, kindly gentlewoman. Mrs. Drew is enjoying retirement tsince January, 19522 at her home in Berkley, Michigan. Her summers will be spent at her lake farm home. Retirements Miss Ganotmg, who was secretary in 113 for 30 years, retired on September 30, 1951. An efficient worker, who was a friend to everyone, Miss Ganoung came toCass in 1921 fromasirn- ilar position in an intermediate school. She was a very kind considerate person withaquiet kindof humor. I could always count on her to come through in a pinch , said Mr. William Stirton. Miss Blanche Ganoung If L- K, Mr. George Schumer Mr. George Schumer, after 26 years in janitorial service, is retiring. He spent his entire employment in this building, workedwith seven different principals , and carried out every order issued to the best of his ability. During the summers, he assumed the responsibility of maintaining the 400 different plants in this build- ing and all teachers are grateful for his keen interest in plant growth and maintenance. Beginning in June, Mr. Schumer plans to spend his entire time attending his invalid wife - and, time permitting, maintaining his beautiful garden of flowers which surround his east side home. .mill ,I , '. Head The music curriculum offers three years of special study in vocal or instrumental music. To enter this department, the prospective student must have had two years experience in his field of music study and pass pitch and rhythm tests. Upon graduation, the music student has an excellent foundation for either professional performance or teaching. During his three year stay in the music department, the student has a choice of belonging to the orchestra, band, choir, or different vocal groups. This also does a great deal in preparing the students for the future. ,ff ' i If J, Roxy away 5 from ro V54 R Doofy -'I' hx lk? To stimulate interest in the everyday thought and use of good sportsmanship, a city-wide sportsman- ship council composed of two representatives from each school was started. The Club is called the IMSSC tlntra-Metropolitan Student Sportsmanship Councilj, and has accomplished many and varied tasks. One of many things done by the council, is an annual event known as Play Day. This is a day on which 16 students from each school in the Detroit area come out to Belle Isle to compete in just for fun sporting events, and meetwith one another in a congenial atmosphere. New and better ideas are dis- cussed to make the local council of real benefit to the pupils. To every student and person, the practice of good sportsmanship should be one of his most important and highest aims. Intra-Metropolitan Student Sportsmanship . Aff! Somehow, a compromise is reached, and the test is given on the day when the most students will miss it. Early in the semester, class was periodically dis- turbed by a pounding on the back wall, apparently com- ing from the room next door. Subsequent investigation proved that this was to be the new women teachers' lounge, and extensive repair work was going on--hence the poimding. Each day the teacher in charge of the repairs would stop by our class after his work was finished and the teacher was informed that he could resume class. Sounds silly? You try and conduct a class over that kind of racket!! Once he instructed the students in the back row to pound back, which they did --the room shook with their pounding. The crowning point came a few days before the end of the term, while the teacher was trying to cram the end chapters of the book into our resisting craniums-- are I s K I ' BY ' ' V f 43,1 X 3 25-224'-Qi' - . -000'-609' ' 7QQ9':'r:.:.Q.-:se '- 4 - 1 , . , wazwiz-26-2-t-2. -1 lx- 9 P' '.'o'9 ! 0'6'x .xg 'V bZ'.'o2'.'v,'q2' Q34-s ' 1 ' I-sa:-S1:2a!:6?Q5'S - - - mrgezfaw sara,- 4 -we w+e:Q.-ea-31 1 I ,- - f . t .'.w,,,43:g9'. 4w.:.:'74S ' i 41 ,,5,:,w, ,,9,g..9:,3 Qogbq, l 4 'v c'QF'-'95 0 Q 0' yo O Q I ,,,, A., gg., 3 . .0 5- w:2?2: -235 .- '-'Hop --x so 4,0 Q QJIKQ, 0 .V , .vpn ,g., 950, ,o, Q . f. -'-' N931 ' ,. 0 03, 0 -.- is 0, I . 0 .+K..x9v.q , ,N ..!0O' ,p.Q'Q 38. A few of the outstanding personalities on the staff this year, were Rose Anne Tendler, who held two posi- tions, that of Assistant Editor-in-Chief and Feature Editor. The seniors can thank Marilyn Sebastian for her work as Senior Editor. Coralee Proudfoot has taken care of the Faculty, in getting together a picture schedule to get new and glamourous photos of each. Vernelis Kinsey has been excellent as Organizations Editor. This was Barbara Felker's first experience in laying out the Sports section and I know that every- one agrees upon the fact that it is pretty great. On the business end, A1 Weatherly and Janet Maclvor suc- ceeded in balancing the books. Betty Hines and Sylvia Lee did many and varied tasks. Loads of thanks go to Nita Carlson, Art Editor, who took care of the Sports Cartoons. Pat Truman dida really terrific job on the June Mock Election cartoons. Paul Apostle and Jeanette Cox also deserve an applause for their work. Paul did the January Mock Elections and Jeanette the Guest Artist Page. Through graduation the staff is losing all of its members, except Al Weatherly, Betty Hines, Barb Felker, and Shirley Dings, so, next semester a complete new staff will be chosen. We hope to get some swell stu- dents and make the 1953 Triangle a sensational yearbook.
