We think we're going out to set the world on fire because we know within ourselves that we have the ability to see a job through. Our elders look at us bewildered, shake their heads, and mutter, UThis younger generation. They stare at our crew-cuts, hobby sox, long skirts, and hot-rods, our new-fangled way of speaking. We, in turn, go right on be-hopping with uDiz,', hucklehucking and having a Mreal coolv time. Wye sigh with Frankie and groan with Damone. These new fads and fancies belong exclusively to our generation. This is our American birthright, and we enjoy it to the utmost. Underneath our brash flippancy, we yearn for an understanding of the turbulent political and economic status of the world about us. We try seriously to discuss the aspects of communism, the atom bomb, and socialized medicine. Breathing freshness into a confused world, we continue to make merry until the day when we shall exchange our giddiness for maturity and as- sume our rightful status as responsible citizens of our country. L. ' l W. E. Stirton Principal Tloycl E. Raclabaugh Administrative Principal Administration ln these pages of the Triangle you will find a pictorial presentation of your school life at Cass Technical High School. Perhaps your picture is included with the graduating seniors. Probably there is a snap shot that you can point to and say Hthat's me over in the right hand corner. I know that as you now look through this annual you will find real pleasure in recognizing your many friends in these pages. But I do hope you will keep this Triangle, and after many years, look it through again. Then you will see the same photographs but in a different light and from another vantage point. I hope that you will find that you have kept and strengthened many of the friendships you found at Cass Tech. l hope that the ambitions and ideals that you ac- quired as a student at Cass Technical School will have by then matured and developed into substan- tial realities. Such can be the case if you will continuously keep before you the high challenge and responsibility to make your education and your training be of service to your community and to your fellow man. Good luck to you. W. E. Stirton. if 4,4 7 W, f 7 ,,,, i yfyf' p Olive Cobb Raymond R. Jared Counselor Principal, Summer School ,u 2 Archie J. Witt I Assistant Principal Louis E. They defeated Southeastern Eastern Northern VS ilbur Wright and lost to Denby Miller Nlorth- eastern. In the Quarter Finals. the Cassites smashed Northwestern to qualify for the Se-mi's. Their opponent was Northeastern, the team that had whipped the Cagers by one point during the regular season. That Cass won the game is history now. In the finals, Cass lost to Miller high. The thin-clads have always had good mile-running and this year is no exception. In the first three meets of the indoor season, Roy Morgan took firsts and is heading toward another gold stripe for his sweater sleeve. In the Southeastern meet, four records fell. One of them was set by the great Eddie Tolan, who graduated from Cass in 1926 and went on to capture Olympic records in the 100 and 200 meter races. Records were broken in the 25 yd.-dash, the 25 yd. high and low hurdles and the one-half mile. Brady Bruenton and Larry Moran were the Cass record smashers at the Cass-SE meet. Although an early publication date prevents late coverage of all the track meets, the tracksters show great improvement in nearly all the events and a successful season is predicted. 2' f r ' f Z 1 Q4' Q Q I T Q7 X B X fy? As we look back upon the past season, we are happy to see that the cross country team did, exceedingly Well. With six returning lettermen Qtwo of which are all-city men! on the team they again captured their title, East-side Champs, for the third consecutive year. They not only showed great speed but they also exhibited a fine display of teamwork. In the city meets, due to a few trees and a few side-tracks the Cass Harriers only took a close second. Now, don't be mistaken -- we think these boys deserve a great deal of praise-something which they never seem to get. So here's wishing them the best of luck next season! QThe Editorsj ? ,fa 3 Y' . I feel as though Pm going to flip my lid, do double nip-ups, or something. What's all the fuss about? That great big wonderful event we dreamed about over 1095 pages ago is soon to happen. I can remember how beautiful that Indian sum- mer day was back in September as I half-heartedly trudged back to the old building. Soon I began to ,4 ! ' realize that people viewed we with new respect and pointed. me out in the halls. I was a senior. A senior. I tasted those words over and over again and felt a A O 15 warm glow tingle clear through to my toes. That 'SQ glow stayed with me, thank goodness, all through Ko our history-making, night football games. Our Tech- QQ, Jr nicians didn't set the world on fire, but everybody F, D63 was so busy burstin' their buttons over those swell ,ff new band uniforms, they scarcely noticed. - O, YN T Can I ever forget the flurry of class elections? 0 IX---E Z9 DQEJS ,,,5g,., How we convulsed at the promises our a s pirin g senior officers made when we really needed a new coke bar and juke box for the lounge! October 11 - B-r-r, what a day! It was raining all species of cats and dogs on this dreary Tuesday. Did that stop the rough and ready seniors of old Cass Tech? Gosh no! The prospects of getting red-hots and Vernors ginger ale lured us out to Belle Isle. Do-se-do and skip-to-my-lou. That I did, that I did, partner, at the first night dance of the term, Town and Country? Everybody teased everybody else about their shingle and crew cuts. From a back view, I couldn't tell the boys from the girls. Some of the kids ooped and hucklebucked, but my old bones aren't what they used to be. On the way home the gang sang Baby, It's Cold Outside and I could hear Bali Hai calling to me. D-Day was declared October 18. Yes, Dawning Day, alias first card marking, revealed your brilliant efforts or realized your worst fears. Wails of the students were drowned among the screams of the poor club initiates. What fiends! Why, they even tried to bore a hole through my head, but I fixed that deal. I told them if they bored another one, I'd catch pneumonia. QKa-choo, cough, coughlj You know, dear diary, I felt very proud and grown-up when Cass was selected as the first high school to par- ticipate in a diabetes test that had formerly been allowed only to college students. As Cass goes, so goes the city of Detroit. That was the slogan which prevailed after the results of the mock elections were revealed. We crystal-balled that Albert E. Cobo would reign as next mayor of this fair city and by gosh, we were right. I attended the symphonic concert last night. Need I say it was no less than Wonderful. Strike up the band! Our harriers came through again to cop the East Side championship. 's, wonderful. Our water boys also had a successful season. Remember, diary, how I told you what a thrill it was to dress up in all my frills and fancies and glide into the Pigskin Prom with my letterman? Three cheers for our hard-working team. Splash parties and wiener roasts occupied our time until Thanksgiving vacation. Before I had time to finish up the turkey hash, I was back in school viewing a showing of Great Expectations. Imagine my biology teacher doubting my honesty. I even had to show her the stub. Dragging a fella to the Twirp Dance was my idea of real fun, especially with the sharp entertainment that was presented on reels. We capered to the rhythm of Stan Kenton and jimmy Dorsey, and bounced with the song styling of Doris Day. Wheel What a time I had at the Letterman's Carnival. That affair should really be followed up annually. A solemn, beautiful affair was the Christmas Concert. I felt very close to God, as I sat listening to the melodious sounds of the traditional music. The I-Hop was really a solid affair. Nice going, junior Class. At Senior Swingout I was glad that the outstanding efforts of my classmates had been rewarded. They's grand crowd. Graduation Day! There was a lump in my throat. A few tears struggled to break through my calm exterior. My heart was racing as I marched up the aisle, and across the infinitely long stage, where awaited my passport to the future. With eager hands, I grasped my diploma and breathed a sigh of relief. Prom night is the night of all nights that I will long remember. As I floated over the beautiful Lee Plaza ball- room floor, I vowed that my ultimate goal throughout life would be the fulfilling of the hopes, dreams, ambi- tions, and ideals which Cass Technical High School, faculty and fellow students, have instilled in my heart. 74 i il'vDS'0N JUNE TQ simon DIARY if iff LVXVVK Dear Diary: january 20, - Gosh, I'm so excited! It was held at the Veteran's Memorial, which seemed like a white palace on that night of enchantment. This is one night I will always cherish. The soft lights and swingy music of Del Delbridge lent an air of sophistication to the dance. As the dance ended, I couldn't hold back the tears, Dear Diary, for I was saying goodbye to old friends I would probably not see again in a long time . . . june 23, - Dear Diary, today is the beginning of a new way of life for me. Let's begin this revealing article with a closeup of a typical Kass Kitten. She is usually five foot two, eyes of blue, and very nice, best described as cute , A shingle hair cut, giving the impression of the 'foutdoor type , characterizes her outward appearance. This lass makes a genuine effort to be loads of fun with everyone Qfemales includedj. She loves all types of dancing, music, athletic games or joining the crowd for an evening of just plain fun. Her popularity is based on her kind, considerate nature. She has ambitions to be a wife? a- mother?-or woman of the world? Anyhow she devotes real effort to any task she under- takes. A little further down the hall, we meet six- foot-two Millie, queen of all the sports-minded kittens. Every Cassite is familiar with this Kit- ten. At every sports event, she exerts all her energy and initiative to keep her old alma mater right up on top. Around the corner, past Room 609, trudges Carmen dragging her latest heartthrob, weak- knee Willie, whose left leg is weighed down by an imaginery ball and chain. This is the type of kitten who traps her mouse and just won't ever let him go. Poor guy! Galloping madly down the hall races Gertie, wearing a vicious, scornful, contemptuous and heart-broken look. Why? Because her steady cat, after whispering sweet nothing in her ear for two years, decided to take jennifer to the Senior Prom instead of her. Gertie's out to get even with the naughty fellow for sure. Shhhhh! Quiet! For there sits Emily who's about as chatty as a stone. Emily, who's afraid to be seen by anyone with two eyes, has made it a practice to steal from class to class sticking so close to the walls that her image is left on every panel. This is a very rare type! Let us note that each Kitten has an individual personality and appearance all her own. Gener- ally speaking, when you look at her you sense an over-all aura of happiness, health and poise. Last, but not least, she belongs to Cass. -ADELE BLASKO 76 I I P fx :Q , 'W ,, W f' Q7 Qtr Q .gf ,, m lv 1 X, K O I ati af 2 a is A 1 if Xe ,' 1' X 4 A-X a 4:2 ffl-if! These specimens are not just mad-hatters who latch onto every bop session and jazz-concert in town. No indeed there are several kinds of cats. We'll mention first the all out and out charac- ter. This lad usually wears chartreuse and purple-striped knee pants, a blue beanie, and sports the most beautiful head of scalp you ever saw. Next comes our well-rounded Kat. Wearing a green and white sweater, new length pants, Cjust long enough to show his bicepsj, he has an almost intelligent expression of his face. Taking the role of inquiring reporter, we query: Alfie, what is Wall Street ? Alfie: Shucks, everybody knows that's the wall the Chinese built to keep the stock market from falling down. . . . It figures. And then there's the sports-minded indiv. When this Kat looks at a pretty girl he usually sees not an example of female pulchritude but footballs, basketballs, or baseballs, depending on the season. Here at last, we come to the cultured, edu- cated, sophisticated, non-maticulated Kat. Are you still with it? My boy, what do you think of the Alaskan situation ? Egbert: It's cold, very cold. Thank you. Thank you, Egbert, for your brilliant commentary on the vital topics of the day. Our country needs more youth with your depth, your gravity. By the way, did you see that cute little number that just walked by ? Egbert: So you think she's pretty? You, my friend, have a bucolic and philistien concep- tion of beauty. Using chimera as a criterion, she may be considered beautiful. Her cranium has a dolichocephalic shape. Her integunet is scrabrous and her jaws are acromegaloid. Other than that, she'll pass. Yep, that's what he said. He said that. So these are our Kass Kats. Variations are many but we love them all because their our very own. -MARIANNE BARBER if xlkffif ,bv L vt f x K if Nil l X px X X X-rx Blauzvz IT on Nor Lights out. Then abruptly, his arm falters. jerking around., he flings his hands over his face, his shoulders shaking. His eyes have the look of a tormented soul. No! no! no! he is thinking, I can't do it again. I ask nothing, nothing but a moment's freedom away from those walls, those hard cement floors, those watching, searching eyes. I can't stand it any longer, but I musn't get caught. I know what they do to you if you get caught, but they won't get lil' old Georgie. Ha! Ha! I know the ropes, I've been around. My only regret is Mom. I want to spare her all this. Brace yourself, boy. You've got to go through with this for Mom's sake. If this gets out, I won't even be able to face old Rover. With a shuddering sigh, he lunges determin- edly with the sharp object, dragging it across the inanimate thing before him. Fearfully picking up the dread article, he neatly folds it and tucks it in his pants pocket. Climbing into his pajamas, he puts the pencil away, clicks off his neon specs, and making peace with his conscience, drifts angelicly into slumberland. There is nothing to worry about now. In the morning he will have his absence note all signed, sealed, and. delivered to Mr. Branton. -MARIANNE BARBER MYSTERY IN FANTASY It was an ordinary spring day-almost. I was sitting in class when all of a sudden, out of no- where came a voice. This is to announce the new schedule. Ef- fective immediately, there will be a forty-five minute recess between five minute periods. My amazement was beyond comprehension. What sort of evolution had occurred? I then proceeded to the lunchroom via the nearest escalator. When I reached the seventh floor, I missed the familiar mile-long lunch lines. Automats supplied the students with all types of delicacies. I was also interested to find that the tables were cleaned off - by robot men. I then went down to the sixth floor which was still the natural habitat for music and art students. The beboppers were no longer hopping the longhairs to an early grave. But the miracle of all miracles was that the art students were drawing pictures that made sense. Modern art was 'blah' one more Since bacti. had always been the best class I never passed, I was interested in seeing the cute little bugs again. I took the express elevator which had stalls for each person so that no more than 250 could get on at a time. Then as I reach- ed the room, tears came to my eyes, for there, available to each student, were electron micro- scopes Qso that the bacterial walls could be seenj. As I started to leave, I noticed that the door of 211 was open. I decided to visit my favorite P 8a A room Qthe only P 8: A roomj. There, too, were new mic's, but these were of a super nature so that the genes in the chromosomes could be seen. I was sad, however, to note the absence of Matilda who had been replaced by cadivers. Since I had always had an interest in the homemakers, I decided to go up to the fifth floor, and visit the cooking rooms. The first thing I noticed was the absence of stoves. Upon inquiring, I learned that the girls didn't need them. I was informed that a seven course meal could be prepared by merely cook- ing capsules in water for five minutes. The girls simply had to learn which capsules to select. I then decided to see what changes had taken place in the outside world. On my way down, I passed what used to be the aero room. - Through the open door, I saw what appeared to be a giant rocket ship. Seeing no one around, I gathered together my courage and entered the ship. Accidently I bumped a lever. The re- sulting noise was ear-shattering. It sounded like a lion. Rooaarrrrrr! ! ! ! What is the meaning of this ?,' the lion-like voice said. You guessed it I had fallen asleep in class again! -MARGIE ' ,fr . ty' ly? I . Q fr., .gi W XXX idiigl I-IS Do WF-'JSQ-n Brushing the remaining traces of confetti and cake crumbs Cfaded and stale left-overs from last night's senior promj off of his best blue serge, Stuort stood before a magnificent oak door. Now that the most important moment of his life had arrived, he felt unsure of himself, hesitent. Suddenly, he had the most uncomfortable sensation. He felt as if every eye in the reception room was turned on him . . . staring at the worn patch on the elbow of his coat jacket . . . gaping at the unusual way his hair kept falling into his sunken eyes . . . oggling his open- ed-toed shoes. He was right. He tried to think of something to do what would divert their attention. With a sweeping gesture, he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and blew his nose - loudly! This seemed to work like an inverted charm. Everyone was looking at his nose now. Greatly un-nerved, Stuort forced himself to knock on the door and enter. Weill What do YOU want? A gruff voice de- manded. Taken by surprise, all Stuort could manage was, I... I . . . I w-w-wanna j-j-job! Gone. Gone in seconds were the weeks and months and years spent practicing the elegant little application speech Stuort had prepared for today. Well, fill out this application blank! the elder man roared. Since the old fellow had not invited Stuort to take a seat, Stu fthe C. T. grad. with perfect mannersp stood for two full hours filling out the form. Every period was where it should be, so too, was every comma, colon, semi-colon and so-forth and so-on. There was not one fatal error. 78 DIME A DOZEN When Stu had finished, the elder took the papers and began reading them. While reading some parts, tears would well up in his eyes and stream down his wrinkled old face, in other parts, his body would shake with laughter. When the last tear had been shed and the last laugh laughed, the elder looked up at Stu with honest admira- tion in his eyes and said, My boy, this paper is a work of art . . . a veritable masterpiece . . . the work of a genius! The elder beamed at him. You may have any job you desire, the Presidency included! Stu thought and thought, but he just couldn't make up his mind as to what kind of a job he wanted. The elder ventured, Well, what was your major in high school? Something strange happened to Stu's calm, cool and collected self. He fell dramatically to his knees . . . I was hoping and praying you wouldn't ask me that! he sobbed. I have a horrible confession to make! It took me eight years to graduate from Cass . . . I start- ed my freshman year in the art curriculum but had to drop out when it was discovered that I was color blind. I tried music but they said I was tone-deaf. After blow- ing up 425, I was asked to leave the science dept. My inquisitiveness and knowledge of science prompted me to run H2 S through the ventilating system. The next day I left air conditioning and. refrigeration. After bouncing around from drafting and bldg. to auto aero, I found myself in electrical, but shocked my instructor so much they thought I was disconnected. I then ex- perienced brief stops in printing, poly tech . . . and yes, even home ec. I was a failure in every one of them. In fact, the only thing I could do better than anyone else was filling out application blanks! What? gasped the elder, with his nose lighted up like a pinball machine. Application fillers are a dime a dozen! Get out of here! Sadly, Stu walked out, aware that the patch at his elbow had dropped out, aware of the hair falling de- jectedly into his eyes, aware of the flippedy-flopping sound his shoes made on the tiled floor. Out in the street once more, Stu walked slowly past stores . . . stores with people in them . . . people WORKING for MONEY. It was then that he spotted the sign. With new hope rising in his omptimistic young heart, he dashed inside the swinging doors of the gleaming white structure. rl: 211 Years have passed by since Stuort first ran through the swinging doors. He has made a place for himself in this world of great men and women. He votes at every election Qwell, almost every onejg he feels free to walk into any bar in town without fear of being thrown right out again Che is a confirmed pretzel addict, you seej. Aside from the constant blaring of auto horns and the ear-grating wails of ambulance, fire and police sirens in the streets outside, the afore-mentioned EEEEEEE! and AAAaagh! were the only sounds cutting the night air. Tonight happened to be THE NIGHT at - Tech. It was commencement night. It was a perfect night. The moon shone down from the heavens above . . . stars twinkled merrily in the inky skys . . . droves of graduates-to-be shone too, via noses, eyes and fore- heads, that is. Yes, it was a perfect night - except for two things -the EEEEEEE! and AAAaagh! These two sounds were coming again and again from a frantic senior standing in front of the auditorium entrance in - Tech. The senior was screaming like a madman. Parents and guests of the graduates-to-be passing by, carefully detoured around the raving young lad and in- to the auditorium. The thought 'that they had succeed- ed in living this long, surviving prohibition, depression, the new look, so why risk it all by walking into screw- ball here?' ran through the minds of many of them. Gregory fthe raving young lady suddenly stopped screaming and darted up some worn stairs and into the dark, emptiness of the second floor. He glanced in desperation at his numerically, fluo- rescently-painted Gruen. Only ten more minutes left to find 'iti so that I can get at 'them' before commence- ment starts! he babbled. Greg spotted a forest-green waste receptacle near him. Maybe 'it's' in there! And with that, he kicked the container over and blowed into the heap of papers and assorted junk that came spilling out of it. 'It' wasn't there. With hope of finding 'it' so that he could get 'them' still burning in Greg's eager young heart, he dashed down the hall looking hither and thither through one waste receptacle after another. Forgetting to turn one corner, he accidently ran smack into a wall . . . a marble wall . . . and landed on-well, he fell pretty hard. With a great effort, he stood up. Rubbing his bruised and battered . . . rubbing his bruis- ed and . . . rubbing his head, he turned the corner and continued down the hall at a slower pace. fsomewhaty Deciding it was useless to search the receptacles any longer, Greg ascended the stairway once again and kept on ascending until he reached the fifth floor and his locker. He took hold of the Yale lock on it and pulled and tugged. with all his might and then some, but it just wouldn't give. If only he could remember where 'it' Was! He glanced at his Watch - Five more minutes to go, before commencement starts, to find 'it' so that I can get at 'them ', he whispered, perspiration gather- ing in huge beads on his forehead and plopping silently onto his nose. --' - ww fel 7:1 v-1 1---1 1 -'Z -f -1 'xii Q F ' .Q 9 QOh, what was the uselj Gregory thought. CI give uplj and so saying, he walked over to a window, opened it and climbed recklessly onto the sooty sill. Taking pencil and paper from his pocket, he began composing a farewell address to the world. Five pencils and four notebooks later, he finally finished, stood up and shouted, Goodbye, cruel world! As he made ready to drop down and end it all, he heard a faint 'clink'. Looking down at his feet, he saw the 'it' . . . the KEY to his YALE LOCK! it had fallen out of his shirt pocket! To his horror, Gregory saw that the key was balanced precariously on the edge of the sooty window sill and was teetering and tottering to beat the band. To all appearances, it was going to fall any minute into the street below! Not daring to breath, Greg slowly knelt and reached out to pick the key up. just a little way more and I'll have it! he exclaimed happily. Skirts are going to be seventeen inches off the floor this year. Montgomery glift is a sensation in Holly- wood. The Navy is building flying saucers. Stage plays are THE thing for teen-age dates. Highways will soon be tinted a variety of colors and Eishenhower may run for the Presidency. Somewhere birds are singing. Somewhere the sun is shining brightly. Somewhere. But on the fifth floor of - Tech, Gregory sits Qin the darkp listening through an air vent, to the auditorium organ as it starts off the commencement exercises. He should be down there. He COULD be down there but for one thing. Huge tears gather in his eyes and overflow down his face as he thinks of the cap and gown, gathering dust in his locker with the yale lock on it. The cap and gown are still in the locker because . . . well, because of a key . . . that teetered, when it should have tottered, right off a certain window sill. -DORIS JUDSON 79 POETRY The following work was recently honored in the 1950 Anthology of Great Lakes States High School Poetry.
