TRIANGLE The Triangle Staff takes pleasure in presenting the T948 issue. The planning and production of the book provided rich and varied experiences for the staff. The staff consists entirely of volunteers, who had the desire to contribute their share to their school and their class. To Dorothy Webster goes the credit for designing the cover. Ronald Stachowiak produced the excellent cartoons for the division pages. The feature cartoons were done on short notice by Don Silverstein. His efforts were excellent. The new sales and distribution plan made things easier for all but Amelia Zeigler, Business Manager, who all but collapsed from the strain of handling the finances without a loss. Audrey and Claire faithfully handled the monotonous but important iob of recording the names of students in all group pictures in addition to their other duties as Organization Editors. Each year, some staff member stands out from the others because of her willingness to do more than her share, her ability to handle any problems that may arise, and because she possesses boundless energy and initiative. Such a person is a pace maker for the rest. Joyce Kathan was our pacemaker for this year. ln addition to her job as Feature Editor, she typed, wrote copy, proof read, solicited advertising, and also served as assistant Business Manager. In closing, I want to thank the entire staff and wish them future success. E. Navickas, Adviser. OUTLOOK For many students the school newspaper means only an occasional issue to glance through and put casually aside to forget about. But to the members of the Outlook Staff it means sweating out headlines, copy, and galleys. It means long hours after school, contacting teachers, students, getting information, writing it up, and getting it in on time. It means recognition such as an International Honor Rating by Quill and Scroll, the George M. Gallup Award for distinguished iournalistic work, and numerous Scholastic awards. Eventually it means membership in the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists-Quill and Scroll. Through seven and occasionally eight issues a semester the Outlook maintains an important contact with the students of Cass-offering guidance, advice and general information. When the going gets tough and it looks like the Outlook will never get to press on time-J. STIRTON ARCHIE WITT HARRY HINMAN Cass Technical High School is under the administration of an able and capable staff. There are some who are known to all Cass Students while others remain in the background. Mr. William E. Stirton, principal of Cass Tech., is the chief man around school. Although unknown to many students, he is constantly working to improve conditions at Cass and to see that students have all the many things he feels that they should have. His hard work for the school and for the community has brought fame to the whole city. Although he has been at Cass only four years, he has accomplished a great deal and is still working for a better Cass. Mr. Archie Witt is the assistant principal. Mr. Witt is well known to all visitors of the office, whether student or not. His advice to students has helped many a student to get back on the right path. With slow speaking voice and snow-white hair he is familiar to all mass meeting attenders. Mr. Harry Hinman is the principal of Cass' night school. Mr. Hinman is known to hardly any of Cass students for he has very little to do with Cass day school. His departure will be felt deeply by his co-workers and by all the members of the administration of Cass. Mr. Raymond Jared, who is head of the science dept. is also Summer School Principal. Mr. Floyd Radabaugh is one'of the best liked men on the administrative staff. His under- MR. BRANTON MISS JACOBS MRS. RUSH MRS. FLOYD MISS O'DONOHUE FLOYD RADABAUGH LOUIS JENNINGS HELEN CRATHERN standing with all the students has made him the favorite of the whole student body. Besides his many other duties, Mr. Radabaugh also sponsors the Senior Class. Mr. Louis Jennings is the Boys' Counselor as well as the manager of vocational guidance, and administration of student programs. His iob is a tough one and few students appreciate his hard efforts to arrange programs to suit everyone. Miss Helen Crathern, a newcomer to Cass, is the Girls' counselor? Attendance has been put under the care of three faculty members. Mr. Bickel, Miss Crathern, and Mr. Branton are in charge of this job. lt is their duty to check up on students who are suspected of cutting classes or doing things forbidden. Miss Showman and Miss Roehrs, office clerks, relinquished their positions of attendance clerks. Mrs. Rush is the lady in charge of vital office records. Mrs. Floyd, Mr. Witt's secretary is always on hand with information about Senior Activities and any other thing she can help you with. Mr. Keilholtz is the keeper of Cass' money. He has charge of the Bookstore and all other school finances. These above mentioned, are only part of the administration, that goes to make up Cass Technical High School. MRS. ROEHERS MISS C. RHODE MRS. DREW MR. The Student Council is the governing body of Cass. lt is made up of representatives of various Clubs, Classes, and other organizations which represent the maiority of the student body. Meeting weekly, this group tries to work out the problems of the school in general. At the present time they are working for a bigger and better Open House, for a permanent athletic field, and for ways to promote better sportsmanship between schools. The Council and the school feels the students should have more social activities, and that they should be allowed to have more say in school plans. The Council is doing everything in its power to bring the wants of the student body to the attention of the faculty, and to the administration. Mr. Franklin Frey, the council sponsor, has done a remarkable job in guiding the council to a successful Open House, launched in May, 1948. The large attendance and numerous compliments received by the students and the faculty, prove that student conducted proiects can be successful. At this open house, the students have a chance to show their parents and friends what they do and learn in school. Open House gives the parent a chance to confer with the faculty stat? with regard Ato problems which are of interest to both parent and teacher. The Pigskin Prom, also inaugurated iust a few years ago, was another highly acclaimed activity of the past year. The highlight of the Prom is the awarding of letters to deserving members of our football team. Last year the student body began inquiring about our request for a permanent athletic field. This has since been the chief work of the council and they are still working hard to attain the goal which many others have strived to reach. Many proiects, which seemingly were impossible, have been accomplished through the time and efforts of the Student Council. rv:-I. an-an Af 3' M ww K 52 W Wien ,iw , , ,Q , 5, . 515 Vf 'silffisy JT 2?'I V .. wg Q xv M. ...,. my 1 s 5 f--wg-Q ff-as for MS? Just think, Diary, I'm a full fledged senior now. Sept. 4, 1947. Oh! what a program. Who'd a thought I had so many subjects left to take. Sept., 1947. The class politicians went to work today. You should have heard those speeches. Oct. 8, 1947. Skip Day. Although it's not my first, this one was different, because it was my own. What if I were to get sick on all those Hot Dogs, Playing Football, or from going swimming with my clothes on, what would Mom or Mr. Branton say? Oct. 31, 1947. The Honor students were honored in the Outlook. Oh Well! We can't all have Brains or Brown Noses, can we? Nov. 14, 1947. The long awaited night has come. My date arrived, the flowers were beautiful, and one could have easily mistaken the gym for a grand Ballroom. With soft lights and dreamy music, we danced 'till we could dance no more. An all around perfect evening, made this Pigskin Prom an event I shall always remember. Dec. 18, 1947. The Music Dept. put on their annual Christmas Concert tonight. Outside, the snow was deep and snowballs were flying. I always did wont a clean, snow-washed, face anyhow. Dec. 19, 1947. The doors of Cass closed to- - day amid Christmas Carols and Mistletoe. The lunch- Q -uw sfkffsf n room rang with laughter and singing voices. Cassites surely do know how to put Mistletoe to good advan- tage. One dirties more hankies that way. llf you know what I mean, Diary.J Jan. 5, 1948. With new watches and diamond rings and flashy neckties, Cass returned to school. The holidays were filled with dates, parties, weiner roasts, and Ice-skating, and now weary students return for the last weeks of our stay at Cass, and to rest up from an eventful two weeks' vacation. Jan. 21, 1948. This is the beginning of OUR week-our last week at Cass. How sad it seems to be. Is it actually happening or am I dreaming? You know, Dear Diary, just between you and I, I'm going to miss Cass. Jan. 23, 1948. Final Card Marking-l held my breath so much today it seems funny to breathe naturally again. Who said teachers liked Seniors? Oh Dear! Will I make it or Not? that is the question? Jan. 28, 1948. I made it. I'm so happy I could cry. I can still hear them calling my name . . . suddenly my stomach becomes a bowl of butterflies and my tongue feels tied with a dozen heavy chains. What were those speeches about? What am I supposed to do now? Oh yes! walk slowly and keep calm. I must remember to keep calm .... And then I'm walking down to my seat. Had I tripped?, Had I stuttered?, my mind was a blank. And now, I'm holding my Diploma. How beautiful, 12 years of everything important in my life is in this one little piece of paper. This is a scrapbook of memories on a single sheet. Oh! happy, wonderful Commencement. Am I getting sentimental or am I really beginning to miss Cass already? Jan. 29, 1948. A wonderful date, beautiful flowers, new formal, and the car for the evening all helped in making this o magic night I'lI never forget. We arrived at the Masonic Temple and were greeted by all the kids. Oh-Diary! it was wonderful. The lights were low, the music soft, and the night was chilly, but nice, and all the world seemed perfect. We danced 'till morn in a kind of dream world which was to be the conclusion of my 120 weeks of hard labor at Cass, Jeeps, Diary, when at morn they played Auld Lang Syne, something funny happened, my stomach quivered and my eyes were blurred with tears. This wonder- ful divine, SENIOR PROM was the end of my terrific, exciting, and thrilling life at Cass, and the setting for Goodbyes to school friends I had gotten to know so well. A phase of my life is gone and so, with tears amid lonesomeness in my heart, I say goodbye to Cass, and with Confidence in the future, I go forward. But, I shall never forget this magic night of nights and those friends I found at the High School of my choice. Good Night, Dear, Dear Diary unuary Senior fficers GEORGE TOYEAS ....... It is the day I became a Senior. March 2, 1948. Diary, can you imagine Cass having a dance fioor, luke box, and coke machine? Well, that's what the class politicians offered gullible 4. Cass Seniors today. An Aero student finally flew off with the title of President. March 25, 1948. I was on Television, I really was. Where? Oh! At school. We had a play and it was Televised by some radio station. March 26, 1948. The doors of Cass closed today, for Easter Vacation. Yep! School is out and it seems terrif. April 5, 1948, Back to school, we go, with and special dates. We're back. Of course it will take us some time to get back into the swing of things again, put I think we'll live through it. It sure will seem good to get some sleep in Economics again. April 22, 1948. We all are feeling sore today and no wonder, the way we all acted at the Senior Splash Party held in the school pool. While riding the largest shoulders I have ever seen, I was thrown and ducked so much, I can still taste the chlorine that was in the pool. Water fights were to be seen everywhere and big brutes were throwing poor, little, defenseless girls into the cold water. Honestly, everyone had a super time and we're all looking for- ward to another Splash Party. I'b still gob wader in mine ears, and a tode in my node. What fun! May 11, 1948. My heart sank. I was scared toothless, when that teacher looked at me and frowned. Would she keep me off the Grad. list? Oh! please give me that D .... My card .... I'm still on the list and I could kiss her. May 19, 1948. Today, Dear Diary, the Senior Class had its Skip Day. The day was warm and with everyone togged in ieans and shirts, we left school at 11:15 for Belle Isle. Amid baseballs, cameras, dripping seniors and oodles of hot dogs, we romped till the sun would let us play no more. And so with wet clothes and mustard covered faces, we left Belle Isle filled with food and memories and used up film. Gee, school tomorrow. June 16, 1948. The Senior Swingout was held today in the Auditorium. It seemed to be different somehow from the rest. Perhaps it was the fact that it was me who was walking down the aisle, instead of the past senior classes. It was beautiful. Everyone stood up as we, the graduating class of June, 1948, paraded to our seats. Envious eyes were upon us all, as scholarships and honors were given out and the student body applauded. This Senior Swingout is one that will always be remembered by the whole class. June 23, 1948. Tonight, Diary Dear, after three long years of work, I was graduated from the best high school in the world. My days at Cass will hold a special place in my heart, for it was there, that I changed from a giddy, schoolgirl into a woman l?J. Although scared out of my wits, while walking across the stage and receiving my long-awaited Diploma, l couldn't help feeling sure of myself. For what my teachers, at Cass, have taught me has given me a feeling of security in the future. The honor of walking across the stage of Cass Technical High School comes only once in a lifetime to the lucky ones that survived the long and hard years. This honor has iust come to me and it will be the proudest moment I shall ever remember. Commencement is over, and among Congratulations and Goodbyes to teachers, I pause to give thanks, that I have been so fortunate to have gone to the high school of my choice, Cass Tech. 2 ,.,,ggt,'::ff v':uV'-L Mu Nlinv I-'KI' June 25, 1948. The Fountain Ballroom was the setting for the most thrilling night of my life. Cinderella could have felt no different than I, when I saw myself as I had never seen myself before. The Masonic Temple was like a palace ballroom. We danced as if enchanted till at I-ast, as all good things do, the prom ended, and tears were everywhere as the lovely strains of Auld Lang Syne filled the huge room. The dreaded moment was here, the moment for saying goodbyes that might last forever. The Prom is over and tomorrow, tonight will be but a memory. The story of a senior and her last contacts with Cass. The strain of tests and the fun of splash parties still ringing in my ears, I say goodbye to Cass, and to all those I loved dearly there, I say thank you for making my stay at Cass a pleasant and interesting one. Dress Design Electrical Fifty-five Fifty-six etire ents The Triangle Staff acting in the name of the faculty, students, and the Graduating Classes of 1947-48 take this opportunity to pay homage to the teachers who have completed their teaching careers. Each year an increasing number of Cass Teachers reach the retirement age. Most of their teaching has been done at Cass and they have been a potent influence on thousands of Cass students during the past thirty years. They can rightly feel they have made an important con- tribution to their community. We wish all you much happiness in your new adventures. MRS. C. ABERG MR. I. BLAIR MR. BOETTCHER SGT. G. DRY MRS. L. GRIMES Mrs. Cora Aberg is probably the only math teacher in Detroit to have a Law Degree and who regularly practices law each summer with a prosecuting attorney. For many years a well known personality about Cass, Mrs. Aberg was instrumental in starting the National Progressive Republican's League under the leadership of Bob LaFollette in her home town of Shell Lake, where she retired last June. Mr. Ivan Blair, of the Architectural Department came to Cass in 1925 after being trans- ferred from the Cooper School where he taught shop. While at Cass, he sponsored the Arch. Club for approximately 5 years. Although he looks forward to his retirement, he stated that he will miss many of his friends. Although Cass is the only high school at which I have taught, I can't think of any I would have rather taught at, stated Mr. Boettcher. He has been at Cass since 1921, teaching mostly English, but supplementing the summer months with the teaching of social sciences. Upon retirement, Mr. Boettcher plans to make his home at Central Lake, Michigan, where he and Mr. Lawrence T. Ray are neighbors. Most of his time, he remarked, will be spent upon remodeling his home, after which he has no definite plans. Sgt. George Dry, who was known as Sarge to his many acquaintances, retired after nearly 20 years of service. He first came to Cass as an instructor in military training. Under his direction Cass' R.O.T.C. Units won the second highest award in the United States. Later Sarge assumed the duties of loading the passenger elevators, keeping order in the auditorium, substitute teaching in study halls, and taking charge of the Lost and Found. Having taken part in some important history herself, Mrs. L. V. Grimes is well suited to her position of history teacher. Women's suffrage was one of the important issues when Mrs. Grimes was young and she actively took part in the fight for women's rights. This widely traveled, white-haired lady will leave Cass with many pleasant memories of the years spent here. IITHPQ MR. H. HINMAN MR. I. KOEHLER MRS. A. PETERS MR. R. POLK MRS. E. TAFT Harry Winfield Hinman has capably directed the Cass Tech Adult Education Program since the year 1922. During this time students have come to know him as an extremely helpful and friendly man. He was born in Illinois, and moved to Nebraska soon after his birth, Being too busy to obtain a great deal of formal education, he left school at the age of sixteen and started to work for the Burlington Railway as an apprentice machinist. In 1904 he entered the University of Nebraska and spent five years completing his high school and college training, graduating at the end of that time with a B.S. Degree. He was awarded the Sigma Xl and was elected to Sigma Tau while in college. Upon his graduation, he went to Wymore, Nebraska, to marry a home town girl, Gertrude Neumann. After several years of railroading experience Harry was sent to represent the Santa Fe Railroad at a conference of the National Association of Corporation Schools. While there, he met Mr. E. G. Allen, late principal of Cass Tech, who asked if he were interested in public work in schools, As a result of this meeting, Harry Hinman was placed in Cass as an instructor, and was made principal of the Cass Tech Adult Educa- tion Program lEvening Schoolj in 1902. Hinman has the rare ability of maintaining a close and confidential relationship with his constantly changing staff. He never gives an order, but gets things done, through the use of well told stories. I. G. Koehler, head of the Cass architectural and mechanical drafting departments, has retired after 39 years with the Detroit Board of Education, 37 of which were served at Cass. He has been here longer than any other teacher. Reminiscing, Mr. Koehler tells of watching the elite of Detroit showing their equestrian abilities on the present site of Cass, which was also the site of the Detroit Creamery later. We have at Cass the finest architectural and mechanical departments in the country, remarked Mr. Koehler, who gives entire credit to what he calls a wonderful group of associate teachers. Mr. and Mrs. Koehler have retired to their home on the banks of Lake Huron. Mrs. Augusta Peters has had many ups and downs during her 22 years at Cass operating an elevator. 99'M: of the students have just been wonderful. She added, I've enioyed it immensely here at Cass, and have met many nice people that I'm going to miss. Mr. Ralph Polk retired after 21 years at Cass as head of the Printing Department. This reserved man was also supervisor of printing of all Detroit Public Schools. Mr. Polk limited his instruction to a :enior printing class only. Despite the fact that official duties were numerous, he managed to write three textbooks which are now being used by Cass' Printing Department. Mr. Polk plans to do a little gardening, but mentions something about a printing laboratory which may cause the garden to suffer a little. Known to many students, and liked by all those who ever had her for civics or history, Mrs. Alleine Taft retired last term to her hometown of Hillsdale, where she once taught high school. According to Mrs. Qua, Mrs. Taft is enioying her retirement very much, after spending twenty years at Cass. Significant of Mrs. Taft was the way she handled her classes, never speaking harshly to students, but acting as if they were her equals, and rather than preaching civics to them, she discussed it, which made her classes both interesting and informative. P ershing VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM Led by their all-city halfback Ivan Cindrich, the Cass eleven fought a hard but losing bat- tle every week of the gridiron season. Had a few of the breaks come their way, the orphans would have finished among the top teams of the league. Typical of the bad breaks was in the Northeastern game, where Cass scored a touchdown but it was called back and the Green and White then failed to score. With nine varsity men returning next year, the out- look for next season is much brighter. The season's highlight was the game with Denby, the city champs, in which Cass, trailing 12-6 in the closing seconds of the game, put on a determined pass attack which almost resulted in victory. Led by their co-captains Bill Wise and Joe Auer, the Cass Cagers completed one of the most successful cage seasons in a decade. Proving the old theory that you need material to have a winning team, Frank Cudillo did a fine iob of coaching the team into the city playoffs. Had the boys been a little more accurate on the foul shooting line, they would have played an undefeated season in the regular competition on the East Side. This handicap was noticeable as Northern K46-421 and Miller C28-261 the city champs, nosed out the boys from Cass. The Detroit Times hon- ored Bill Wise as all-city center on the first team, and Joe Auer to the prep. Hall-of- Fame. With Nick Toyeas, John Kalevas, Rueben Thompson, Joe Auer, and Jim Geddes returning for next year's competition, the Caxs five will continue the fine example set by the 1947-1948 team. CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM With all-city Chalmers Alexander and Lynn De Smyter pacing the Harriers, the Cass Cross-Country Team finished a successful season on the cinder pathway. Under the fine coaching of Mr. D. Cooper, and with the will to win, the thinclads trounced Northeastern, Hamtramck, North- ern, and Southern during the regular season. Placing second in the East Side Meet, the Boys from Cass came within two points of Pershing for the honor of becoming East Side Champs. The squad was strengthened by previous lettermen Wayne Larno, Walter Koziol, Sam Catalan and Captain John Vitta, returning, Although only in his second season as coach of the Tennis Team, Frank Cudillo seems to get the proper results. lt seems safe to predict another successful season for the team, stated Captain John Vitta at the beginning of the season. GOLF TEAM As we go to press, the Golf Team has just concluded practice and is about to meet Southeastern in its first match. With Richard Polus and Acting Captain Roy Vomastek re- turning from last year's successful team, which won five and lost three matches, the Golfers are aiming to tee off for another winning season. Adventure lies in wait for you. -E. F. A. Seach ' We sincerely hope all your adventures will be wholly pleasant. If you were to ask those who graduated, one, five, ten or fifteen years or more ago, we rather think they would tell you that both your adventures and your ventures will be more pleasant and more profitable when you have a bank account. You will never be sorry if you save. It is never too early or too late to start a bank account with us-but for you the sooner, of course, the better. In them, Gas cooks the food, heats water automatically, refrigerates food, incinerates garbage and trash, dries laundry automatically. Housekeeping drudg- ery has decreased tremendously because of modern Gas service. The industrial use of Gas has increased, too, in the communities we serve. So many things can be done better with Gas! However, Gas service means more than just selling Gas for use in homes and factories. It means the investment of millions of dollars, maintenance of hundreds of miles of mains and services, constant planning to increase and safeguard supply, constant effort to ren- der greater service with greater economy. 415 Clifford - Detroit JI! The trouble? There are so many man-made wonders to show them up as bushers in the Nliracle League. Could any amount of lamp rubbing produce, for example, such out-of-this-world things as: the electron microscope, germ-killing lamps, jet planes or the electric eye? They've also switched radar from the battlefield to the kitchen in a dingus which will roast a hot dog, or broil a steak, before you can draw a cup of coffee to go with it. It's enough to give any Class A genie a nervous breakdown. And, as always, there are two schools of thought on where we go from here. One hundred eighteen E One is ably represented by those like Nlr. Henry L. Ellsworth, one-time U. S. Commissioner of Patents, who in 1844 stated that man had reached Ihe end nf his creative ability! Thereis another, larger school, thank goodness, which holds that we are only crossing the threshold of man's creativeness . . . only beginning to sense the bountiful world ahead.
