A iiafifetasisessi The fine facilities of Lewis Cass made it an ideal school to host band contests. Cass hosted marching contests on October 4, and a concert contest April 23 and 24. The band scored superior ratings in both contests. The 130 piece marching band tied with New Haven for the best marching performance. The 111 piece symphonic band tied with Western for the best concert band. On November 7 and 8, after the marching contest, the band traveled to Morehead, Kentucky, to compete with 20 of the nation's finest bands. The Cass band finished 11th, but more important were the many excellent bands which they saw perform and had the opportunity to work with. The band also performed at the football games, basketball games, pep sessions, concerts and convocations. The symphonic band was privileged to have professional trumpeter Professor Ierry Franks solo with them. Franks performed for three years on The Tonight Show. The Marching Kings really stepped up the pace as they were invited to perform at the Bicentennial Festival in Washington, D.C. on Iune 10, 11, and 12. This special invitation came from Congressman Bud Hillis and the band performed at both the Iefferson and Lincoln Memorials. Band 137
