Winter ... when the world is whitewashed with frozen waves and the sky is filled with marshmallow clouds. A transparent seal of ice hangs on the trees and the weeds in the field stand at attention, frozen into posi- tion. Civilization moves in a slow-motion mass. The blare of a snowmobile's engines pierces the icy air, seems to be going twice as fast as it really is because of the slowness with which everything else is moving. The neighborhood kids play amateur hockey, but in their minds they are every bit as good as Gordie Howe or Bobby Hull. The ice skaters picture themselves as miniature Peggy Flemings. Inside, hopes burn high in the heart of every student that more snow will blanket the ground; enough so that there will be no school. Children and adults alike are huddling over the radiator. The television displays the waning hours of fall with the last few plays of the football game. The oven is heating the room as well as cooking the food. People stare outside at the softness of the snow, wondering how it can look so beautiful and be so frigid at the same time. Yet no matter how bitter cold the air is, the atmosphere of winter is warm.
