1 PERANNOS 1969 Marsha Searls . Sandi Holcomb Editors Cass City High School Cass City, Michigan Karen Wallace..............Advisor Roger Reid . Student Photographer Briggs Studio.................... Neitzel Studio.........Photography I Don He was a problem, everyone said he was. But yet everyone wanted him around. The party just wasn’t any fun without him. He always had some smart remark about everything. Yet, deep inside him there was some- thing great, really great. He could have become something good, a help to society. But no, his life had to be snuffed out in one night of fun. Why? Everyone asks themselves, why? The ones who loved him for a brother. The ones who loved him for a lover. No one will ever fill his place. His red hair, his freckles, his wonder- ful smile, the temper that flared up and died just as quickly. I think everyone loved him, some for what he was, some for what he could be. And I know every one, including teachers, will miss him. There will never be another Don. A Tribute To Don Wernette 2 Nature follows a predestined course. Spring; life comes forth. Summer; it lives out its life. Fall; it dies. Winter; life stays dormant. Nature goes by reasons ... and so does school. Some like autumn; school starts, football begins. Others like winter; the velvety blanket of snow, Christmas and New Years. Still others prefer spring; baseball, mud puddles, warm weather, school ending. No matter which season is one person’s favorite, there are plenty of activities for each student as each season unfolds its own appealing qualities. 4 Autumn is going back to school while geese fly south, the sound of a shot penetrating the distant air, the smell of leaves burning, and the crunch of kids jumping into piles of dry leaves. Autumn is gathering pumpkins for Halloween and for a Thanksgiving pie. It is picking corn in the fresh, crisp air with a scent of winter. Autumn is the hunter and his dog stalking the corn fields, or watching a football game snuggled in a warm blanket. But most of all autumn is a prelude to winter ... the first trace of snow in October and the grey, somber November sky. Autumn 5 Top - D. Little, T. Karr, J. Wencley, B. McLeish, M. Sherman, K. S. football team began this past season by losing with good margins to Frankenmuth and Mt. Morris. We followed these games by playing a poor game against Bad Axe. However, the team showed their strength when they won over Sandusky, 18-6. In the following weeks, we had close contests with Caro and Marlette, although we didn't make any wins. This season ended with a non-conference game with North Branch, which finished in a tie. Our team was composed of a large number of underclassmen who should form a good nucleus for next year's football season. SCORES cc 6 Mt. After the parade, spectators huddled in the stands to escape the settling chill, and proceeded to enjoy our game with Vassar. At half time, everyone waited breathlessly to learn the outcome of the election for Homecoming Queen. Jean Russell was crowned by Kathy Mark, the Homecoming Queen of 1967. The Queen and her court were escorted by Senior football players. After the game the students danced to the music of the Corrupters from Vassar. The Sophomores decided upon BREW- ING A VICTORY as their float’s theme, while the Freshmen chose UP, UP, AND AWAY. 8 Receiving third place was the Seniors' float. 1 t CUT 'EM UP - HEAD 'EM OFF, the championship float, was the result of the first year of Junior High panic ipation. The Juniors were awarded the second place rating. 9 1968 Homecoming Queen And Court Queen---------- J ean Russell Members of the Court: Mona Calka Carla Calka Lynn Haire Cindy Strickland 1969 Queen, Jean Russell is crowned by 1967 Queen Kathy Mark at Homecoming. 10 Winter ... when the world is whitewashed with frozen waves and the sky is filled with marshmallow clouds. A transparent seal of ice hangs on the trees and the weeds in the field stand at attention, frozen into posi- tion. Civilization moves in a slow-motion mass. The blare of a snowmobile's engines pierces the icy air, seems to be going twice as fast as it really is because of the slowness with which everything else is moving. The neighborhood kids play amateur hockey, but in their minds they are every bit as good as Gordie Howe or Bobby Hull. The ice skaters picture themselves as miniature Peggy Flemings. Inside, hopes burn high in the heart of every student that more snow will blanket the ground; enough so that there will be no school. Children and adults alike are huddling over the radiator. The television displays the waning hours of fall with the last few plays of the football game. The oven is heating the room as well as cooking the food. People stare outside at the softness of the snow, wondering how it can look so beautiful and be so frigid at the same time. Yet no matter how bitter cold the air is, the atmosphere of winter is warm. Perennial signs burst forth again ... the large pile of snow melts into second base ... the hockey rink becomes a continuous headache for mothers with small children who enjoy sloshing about in water ... driveways are changed from masses of snow into masses of mud ... warm rains beckon little children forth ... Bare branches explode into blossom-covered boughs. Spring appears and students find school is in the home stretch. Spring fever invades the minds of young men. They think of the one thing for which they need no provocation girls. Car washes work to full capacity ... blooming fields stir the hearts ... flowers blossoming everywhere excite the sentimental. Spring brings forth an aliveness from people ... a rebirth ... a feeling of freedom and hope everywhere. i o Harvey! Mardi Auten and Brenda Wagner as Nurse Kelly and Mrs. Chevena.
