Johnson On The Road To Mandalay” (Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom) Class History The scene was a large court room. The audience consisted of the Class of '62. Everyone rose as the Honorable Willis Campbell entered the room. Court was now in session. This case was important for it would decide whether or not the Class of '62 had accomplished much in the past four years. The first scheduled witness was Mr. Gilchrist, one of our freshman class sponsors. Since he was unable to testify in court, Mr. Weatherhead, the other class sponsor was called to the stand as the first witness. He slowly stated the following facts. The Freshman Class was led by President Dallas Nichols. He was assisted by Vice President, Bart Coleman. The Secretary was Tom Jones and Treasurer was Ron Dillon. The main activities were a Bake Sale and D. J. Dances. The next witness was president of the Sophomore Class, Jim Rawson. He testified that he was assisted by Sharon Parrott as Vice President, Gerry Nemeth as Secretary, and Joyce DeLong as Treasurer. He continued, stating that the class was headed by our sponsors, Mr. Eckhart and Mr. Seals. It was brought to the attention of the court that the class had refreshment sales at a number of track meets. One main money making project was the sale of stationery. The selling of Red Hawk Pens was another successful effort. As the next witness, Miss Mannino was called up to the stand. She told the jury that she and Mr. Cardew, the other Junior Class Sponsor, helped the Juniors put on one of the most successful Junior-Senior Banquets and Proms, under the theme of Drifting and Dreaming. Everyone enjoyed the music of Gunsell's Orchestra and even the judge drifted off in the memory of the beautiful decorations. Miss Mannino also told of the Junior Play, Home Sweet Homocide, a mystery comedy directed by Mr. Hauck. The kids enjoyed doing it and it was well received. The annual magazine sales swelled our treasury that year. Class officers: President, Sharon Parrott; Vice President, Bruce Avery; Secretary, Carol Kennedy; and Treasurer, Larry Robinson led us through a successful Junior Year. The very last witness, Senior Class President. Wayne Dillon took the stand. The things he stated were not so very old to us. He plead with the jury, telling them of our candy sales and the Mum sales at the Homecoming Game to make last-minute money. He told them of the Senior Homecoming float on which we worked so hard. He pointed out that the Christmas Prom; White Christmas, was one of the prettiest the school had seen. Eldred Kelley, Vice President; Heather Milligan, Secretary; and Carol Walmsley, Treasurer were the president's helpers. Class sponsors were Mr. Stickle and Mr. Sherman. We'll always remember the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet because they were our last. The theme, On the Road to Mandalay, made the decorations unusual and unforgettable. The jury, composed of teachers and student council members left the room and after many long hours returned with the verdict: We all agree that your class has accomplished very much. Our sentence was an exciting five-day trip to New York. All too fast came Swing-Out, Baccalaureate and the night we had all waited for, Com- mencement. After sad goodbyes to all our friends, we began a completely new life. 33 Swing Out 1962 This is the last school event for the band and for the Seniors. Swing out is the seniors last event before they receive their diplomas on Tuesday night. It’s a time to be happy and be with school- mates before you leave and take separate paths to the future. Baccalaureate Service Junior girls are marching in with their hoops of flowers. Seniors are walking through the hoops. The Band is playing Pomp and Circumstance as the Seniors walk in. Betty Spaulding Some of our fair Seniors are crying and sad that they must leave the school where they spent many short years; and yet they have made one more step into the world of Tomorrow. We the student body of Cass City High wish you all the luck in the world. We'll miss you all in the years to come. Class Prophecy It is now the year 1972 and ten years have passed since we left the halls of Cass City High School striving forward toward greater opportunities. Cheri Rice and I, Carol Kennedy decided to tour the United States in hope of seeing our former classmates. On departing from Idlewild Airport in New York City we were surprised to learn that our pilot was Dallas Nichols and co-pilot Bart Coleman. Dallas told us that another former classmate Kathy Nicholas would be our stewardess. Our first stop was Philadelphia, where upon arrival we decided to confirm our tickets and we were pleasantly surprised when Bev and Nancy Behr approached us as airline ticket clerks. Having plenty of time before our departure we decided to tour the beautiful city of Philadelphia. After finally hailing a taxi we were surprised to see Judy Johnson as our driver, and she told us that she was the only woman taxicab driver in Philadelphia. Upon arrival at the sight of the famous Liberty Bell, we were happy to meet Wayne Dillon, a prominent history teacher in one of the local high schools, who was showing his students this historical sight. Our guide through the historic museum near the sight of the Liberty Bell was another former classmate Daily Parrish. Upon discovering we had little time before take-off we hurried back to the airport. Just as we were boarding the plane we were surprised to meet Jackie Pelton, Pam Hurd, Karen Nemeth, and Charlotte Pawlowski who are now employed at a nationally famous beauty salon managed by Jeanne Fisher. They told us they were on their way to Detroit to attend the National Beauticians Convention. When we reached Detroit, Cheri and I decided to spend a few days there and also take a side trip back to Cass City. While in Detroit we went to see the Detroit Tigers play at Tiger Stadium. Among the famous players were Wayne Brown, Don Dillon, Jerry Hillaker, and their manager was Larry Robinson. After the game while chatting with Larry we learned that Joy Frieburger, Janice Brown, Betty Spaulding, Sharon Parrott, and Cheryl O'Dell were employed as nurses at Ford Hospital. Also Virginia Perry is employed as medical assistant to a prominent doctor at Ford Clinic where Bob Parrott is chief lab. x-ray technician. The following morning we departed for Cass City by Greyhound bus and our driver was another former classmate Ivan Paladi. As we approached Cass City Ivan pointed out several large farms belonging to some of our former classmates. Among them were John Battel, Dean Hutchinson, Dale Meredith, Wilbert Goodall, and the Lubaczewski Brothers, (Casmir and Leonard). 38 While in Cass City we went back to our old Alma Mater. Some of the younger teachers included Dick Creason as football coach, Ron Dillon as track coach, Heather Milligan as senior English teacher, and we also learned that the husband of Judy McIntosh was the history teacher. Upon talking to Heather we learned that Bob Morley owns the largest pharmacy in Michigan which is located in Cass City, Jerry King manages General Cable, and Bob McIntosh owns a large construction company with its headquarters in Cass City. After leaving the school we decided to drop in on Jim Rawson, a prominent dentist known throughout the country. While in his office we ran into Joyce DeLong and Karen Kritzman who are now married and living in the Cass City area. From Jim we also learned that Anita Crawford is assistant mortician at the Douglas Funeral Home a few doors down the street. On our way back to Detroit we stopped in Flint for lunch and ran into Garey Merchant in one of the famous restaurants. He told us that he was the head pediatrician at Hurley Hospital. Garey also informed us that George Izydorek is president of the A. C. Spark Plug Division of General Motors and Joyce Field is his private secretary. After lunch Cheri and I proceeded back to Detroit. Upon arriving in Detroit we went right to Metropolitan Airport. Before boarding the plane we ran into Harold Lee, Frank Tordai, and Ed Hiser, who were on their way back to Cape Canaveral where they are working on secret space projects. We then proceeded to board the plane where we met Leona Oleski, who was going to be our charming stewardess on our trip to Washington D. C. She told us that Bill Burgett was going to be our pilot and Jim Guinther co-pilot. When our plane arrived at Memorial Airport in Washington Cheri and I decided to tour the Capitol Building and other historical sights and government buildings. WTiile we were touring the Capitol Building we were happy to run into Flora MacRae who informed us that she was now personal secretary to the President of the United States. She also informed us that Roy Powell is now Secretary of the Navy and Darlene Chippi is his private secretary, Bob Parmer is in the President’s Cabinet as Secretary of Labor and his secretary is Sharon Wallace. She also informed us that Carol Walmsley is private secretary to Ed Mark who is head of the F.B.I. After touring the Capital we went to tour the Pentagon where we ran into Bill Bliss who is chief com- mandant of the Marine Corps. He told us that Bruce Avery is a famous nuclear physicist who is working in Germany on a secret formula for our government. After discovering that so many of our former classmates were working for our government we decided to look in the government directory. There we discovered that Connie Long is now working as a missionary for the Peace Corps in Africa; Jim Marshall, Roger Root, Ron Rutkowski, and Ken Roach are working for the Secret Service in the Far East; Larry Finkbeiner is head of the Underwater Demolition Department for the Navy; and Wayne Rexin in engineering a new Missile Base in England. 39 As we were leaving the Capitol Building we ran into Donna Scharich who was taking a group of small children on a tour. She told us that five of the children were hers and the rest were neighbor children. She is president of the P.T.A. and very active in social affairs. We were in a hurry to get back to the airport so we called a taxi. When we got in the cab we were surprised to see Bernard Czeszewski as our driver. He told us that he now owns a fleet of six cabs. Before boarding the plane we went to confirm our tickets and found that Charlotte Watson was ground supervisor for T.W.A. Cheri and I went directly to our apartment to rest after a whirl-wind trip. That evening we decided to go the Latin Quarter for dinner. While there we met Jackie Keegan who is now married to a prominent doctor in New York and Eldred Kelley who owns the largest mortuary in New York City. They told us that Tom Jones and his orchestra were going to play at the club that night so we stayed to listen. Tom has received world acclaim for his compositions. This wonderful evening ended our tour. The next morning Cheri and I were back at our jobs at the United Nations. Cheri is an interpreter for the General Assembly and I am personal secretary to the Secretary General of the United Nations. 40 UNDERGRADS Juniors D. Allen D. Ashmore J. Bailey K. Ballard S. Debaters are chosen on the strength of their intelligence and their ability to reason things out. Debate work is hard, as the debater must search out evidence for everything he says. The debater must also possess speaking ability and be able to inform in clear, concise reasons. This training is a very good preparatory course for your post school life. Their many long hours of work are certainly appreciated by all of us. These men have brought Cass City one of the finest athletic records of any school in the thumb. Coach Yedinak will be going to Alpena. Pre- viously he was in charge of track and football. Coach Claseman, who was in charge of baseball and basketball, will be teaching in Port Huron. Certainly both of these men will be missed by all of us next year.
