Gunsell's Orchestra from Caro furnished music for dancing. More of the very fine decorations provided by the Juniors are shown in the picture below. Much credit is due Mr. Cardew and Miss Mannlno, junior class advisers, for the excellent setting provided again this year. 28 At right we see the group as they return to the school. At left the students seem to be returning rather reluc- tantly, but it won't be for long because commence- ment is justone week away. Senior Swingout a j 1961 Once again the seniors step forth from the south en- trance of the high school on their tour down town for the annual swingout march. At left the class is shown starting the tour of the business district. As usual the band leads the way. This is perhaps the last time this year that they will have a chance to march together. Class History As we entered Cass City High School in the fall of 1956, the future looked bright before us. Some were a little afraid but most of us looked forward to the adventures that lay just ahead. The four years in high school passed swiftly and now we stand at the entrance of another new and exciting world. In our Freshman year, we were led by President, Jim Ross; Vice-President, Carol Morell; Secretary, Sally Hobart; and Treasurer, Gary Hutchinson. Under the leadership of Mr. Harry Miller and Mr. Wayne Wilson, our advisers, we worked toward our Senior Trip that seemed so far away then. As projects we sold basketball pins, bake sales, sponsored disk-jockey dances and went caroling at Christmas. Summer vacation went all too quickly and we returned in the fall as Sophomores. For class officers we chose: President, Paul Holmberg; Vice-President, Art Randall; Secretary, Linda Richards; and Treasurer, Carl McIntosh. Our class sponsors, who helped us through a successful year, were Mr. Michael Eckhart, and Mr. James Seals. Our main activities were the selling of stationery and the sponsoring of disk-jockey dances. Our Junior year went by even faster than previous years had and will always stand out in our minds. We were headed by President, Gordon Goodall; Vice-President, Dick Albee; Secretary, Donna Wildman; and Treasurer, Art Randall. Mr. Orion Cardew and Miss Carol Mannino directed us through a very prosperous year. During this year, we were a very busy class, selling mums at the Homecoming game, sponsoring the Junior play People vs. Maxine Lowe, along with the annual magazine sale. The honor of giving the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, Journey to the Stars, was also ours this year. Now our Senior year has drawn to a close. Our class officers this year were: President, Marvin McCormick; Vice-President, Tim Anthes; Secretary, Dick Albee; and Treasurer, Bob Sawdon. Our faithful sponsors during our last year were Mr. Dale Sherman and Mr. Robert Stickle. As we look back we realize that we had a most eventful year. Our Senior play, Meet Me in St. Louis, was warmly received, and the hard work which we put into the candy sales yielded excellent profits. Most of all we will remember the Junior-Senior Banquet. The delicious food, the beautifully decorated gym which carried out the theme Drifting and Dreaming. Foremost in our minds is our long awaited trip on the S. S. South American from Detroit to Chicago, the short stop over at Mackinac Island, the two days spent in Chicago at the Palmer House, and the long train ride back to Imlay City. All too fast came Swing-Out, Baccalaureate and the night we had all waited for, Commencement. The halls are now silent as the last Senior leaves, but the hardest of all are the goodbyes to all our friends. We, the class of 1961, leave a little sorrowfully and regretfully, but we will remember all of the wonderful, good times we had at Cass City High School. Willis Campbell Superintendent Vocal Solo .. i ... . Larry Retherford The Lord's Prayer - Malotte Class Prophecy It was exactly 14 years after we graduated that Beverly Irrer, a medical technician and Eloise Smith, her secretary visited me at my office. We decided to look up a few of our classmates, so we left my business of hiring bachelors for the Secret Service in the hands of one of my most trusted secretaries Nancy Miljure. I knew the business was in good hands so we purchased our plane tickets from the airport in Manila and left immediately. On boarding the plane we recognized two schoolmates, Kay Hudson and Carol Morell taking tickets and talking to the pilot, who was Larry Goodall. We talked to them for just a moment and told them of our plans. In less than 2 hours, we were back in Cass City. Then we decided we had better spruce up a bit so we went to the nearest salon and found that three of our classmates had teamed up and started their own business. They were Betty Droman, Connie Hartwick and Jeanne Hahn. Next on our list, we looked up an old buddy Money-bags,” they call him, Gary Hutchinson who inherited an estate and was knee-deep in Real Estate Business. We rented a Hertz-Renta-Car from the used car lot and we about did a double flip when we saw who operated it. That’s right, Jim Phelps was the owner. He hired Ronald Gertz as his mechanic and George Malek as his top engineer. We thought we would stop in to see some of our teachers but they had been re- placed by our own friends. Who did we see but Sally Hobart herding in her kindergarten students for their nap, Dave Binder pounding History into teenagers and Susan Shaw teaching Math to her seventh and eighth graders. On leaving the school, we heard the familiar grunts, groans, and gravel grinding sounds from the track. There Art Randall and Tim Anthes were shaping the boys into the Future Track Stars. We stopped to talk to them and ask them where they spent most of their spare time and they said they played pool at Mike and Jims.” It seemed as though Jim Walmsley and Mike O'Dell had gotten their wish as pool hall owners. That night Hudson's from Detroit were putting on a style show so we thought we would attend to see how it would be. Marilyn Erla was first on the stage, modeling a beautiful dress arranged by Linda Hulien. Shirley Novak also modeled a suit ar- ranged by Linda. They both looked very successful in their business. Then it was Sunday and we attended a church just put up two years ago. Larry Retherford was the minister and Colleen Sheffer was the Choir Leader. When the service was over, we noticed Karen Rosenstangel and Irvin Schram waiting for Sunday School to be dismissed. In a few minutes Janis Seeley, dismissed her Sunday School Class and then came over to talk to us. She had a very good secretarial job, and Donna Weippert, Kathy Fisher and Mary Anker all worked in the same office for Anthony Aleksink who owned a big business. Jim Reid and Gary Bartle were the top engineers in his business. They drew designs for future Airmobiles. We thought we would travel and see more of the state being this was the first time I'd been there in 14 years. We hailed a taxi, and who should it be but Dennis James driving the cab. We chatted a while and he told us that John Jezewski and Bill Finkbeiner had started a wiener factory in Nevada and were very successful. We took the train to Nevada to see them and at the roulette tables were Jack Alexander and Elmer Parrish squandering their bundle on the wheel. But one could see it didn't hurt them, they were rolling in the dough. While traveling through Nevada we accidently ran into a van-truck. The driver looked familiar and it turned out to be Eddie Paladi. He had just hit a dog and was taking him to Dr. James Freye, Veterinarian. We asked if it was the same one as in school and he said it was. We asked him if he heard anything about Paul Holmberg and Dick Albee and he said he thought they had started a dentistry business in Florida; we hesitated and then said our good-byes and headed for Florida. While crossing Louisiana we spotted a record and gift shop that we'd always wanted to visit. It happened that Mary Lou Crawford had opened up the business after she had gotten married. We noticed some cute sponge rubber school chairs and we asked where she had purchased them. She said that Bill Britt and Gordon Goodall had invented them and they were being used in Kentucky a lot. We drove to Fort Knox to observe the gold and on my way, pigs were standing in the road and wouldn't move. The farmer was sleeping on a pile of hay so we started to walk over to him and noticed that it was Robert Sawdon. He told us that Gordon Patterson and he had bought a 1,000 acre ranch and were haying right now. We continued on our way, at Fort Knox Carl McIntosh was stacking gold bricks and beside him was Roger Peters stacking gold coins. Both were too involved so we went on. We decided to go on to Philadelphia when we heard that Dr. Dotty Jo Ballard and Dr. Shirley Ross had received honorable mention for coming up with an anti-any- disease toxin guaranteed for 2 years. When talking to them we learned that Marilyn Morell, Beverly Hurd, and Bette Bond all worked for them. They were all married now and doctored their own families. They took us to their medical building and we spotted Janet Russell, Janet Klinkman, and Ramona Mayterano as the head nurses. They told us that Sande Bassett, and Jane Bringardner were working as social workers for the government near Philadelphia. After traveling for so long, we stopped at a coffee shop and sat down beside a girl who looked very familiar. It was Gail Rocheleau, who told us that she worked for Ann Krueger who was now a prominent success in engineering. She also said that Rachel Leyva, Connie Decker and Hazel Little were employed there too as secretaries. We chatted a while and she then went back to work. We decided to call Sally Profit who was now a successful psychiatrist but there was no answer. The operator's voice sounded familiar and come to find out it was Virginia Lefler. She said that she had received a phone call from Marilyn Guinther to say that she was happily married and busy taking care of her tribe of kids. We then decided we'd better start back because our two weeks leave were almost up. While crossing the street to hail a cab, we happened to spot the Krueger Salon. We ran in to find Thelma Krueger setting Sharon Heronamus' hair who was now a successful secretary and also married, busy taking care of her family. Sharon told us that Brunodine Zawilinski also worked in the same office. After leaving the Salon, we walked down the street to a tavern where we noticed a familiar face bearing down on us. It happened to be David Dearing in for his morning usual. (To see his wife). We arrived back in Cass City about 3:00 in the afternoon. We heard that Sharron Van Allen, Jo Ann Hull, Bob Wright and Cathy Beckett were married and had their own family. Our plane for Manila left at 4:30 p.m., so we went to the airport at 4:00. We noticed some very good paintings in the gallery. We inquired about them and found they were pieces done by Bonnie De Long, now, a teacher of art. We picked up a F.F.A. Magazine from the news rack and we saw Larry Merchant, Russell Smith, Charles Nemeth and George Sangster standing, with their sons showing prize-winning heifers. They gave a benefit dinner and Phillip Morse was the guest speaker. We had a bite to eat and then we noticed a man standing, in a foreign suit of clothing and when he turned around, we found out that it was Jim Ross who was now teaching overseas and was now home for vacation. It was time to board the plane and we saw Darold Terbush sitting across from us. We went over and had a chat with him. He told us that Larry Maharg now had his own church and Mary Bustamante was his teacher of the classes in his church. Back home, the business was running as smooth as ever. My vacation was now overdue 2 days. Bev and Eloise went back home and we were all satisfied as we had visited most of our classmates.
