Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1957 volume:

Joreu or Backward, turn backward, oh time in your flight. Bring back that moment if just for tonight. How many times have you heard those words spoken? Time, however, is not capable of being reversed. Those fond experiences cannot be repeated, but must be content with living in your memories. Your high school days are the happiest days of your life. These happy, carefree days all too soon speed by and can only live in your dreams. Remember your first big date? - Your steady with whom you thought you would never break up? - The senior play? - and the grand finale, graduation? Some of these you may have forgotten due to the great demands of life. Take time out of your busy life to think back on these memories. If looking through this 1956-'57 PERANNOS can help to make these memories seem a bit more vivid, then we can take pride in our work and feel that our efforts were not in vain. James MacTavish, Co-editor 2dedication Mike Yedinak, Irv. Claseman, Ruth Seals, Cll Holes, Ray Whalin. It is an honor to win a Thumb B Championship in any one sport during a school year but to win three championships in one year is certainly an outstanding achievement. This year Cass City athletes captured trophies in football, baseball and all three trophies offered in track, plus the traveling trophy for football at Caro. As if that were not enough the Junior High won the league track champi- onship for the third straight year. Much credit is due for the excellent work done by the coaching staff this year and in previous years. Therefore, in recognition of their fine results here at Cass City, we, the Class of 1957, are proud to dedicate this edition of PERANNOS to our coaches. The program is now on the air. The studio audience and the living room reviewers watch with excitement as the master of ceremonies, Willis Campbell, walks down through the audience with his microphone. After talking with several celebrities, he stopped and announced, Class of 1957, 'This Is Your Life . With the honored group seated around the chair of honor, Mr. Campbell began the life story. It is the fall of 1953 when you first met as a class under the title. Freshmen. You chose as your sponsor the late Thelma J. Hunt whose hard work and tireless effort gave this class a firm start to- ward its future goal. In a class election you elected Bob Martus as your class president, with Ed Freeman your vice-president, Barbara Gross as treasurer and Sally Hunt your secretary. The year went by fast and you earned money by sponsoring skating parties and bake sales. A brief commercial interrupted the life story at this point. It was in the fall of 1954 that you went back to Cass City High School as Sophomores. Mr. Campbell continued. At this time in your life your class sponsor was, Mr. James Seales and to aid him in his work Douglas Gingrich was named president. Walter Kloc acted as vice-president while Sharon Brown and Barbara Gross took over the duties of treasurer and secretary. Your great school days were enriched by dances and bake sales. In the latter part of the year a portion of your goal was realized when you received your class rings. It was a good year and in the spring of 1955 you brought the first half of your high school career to a close. The latter part of 1955 found you with the title 'Juniors'. More social activities took place that year than you had previously known. Mr. Orion Cardew became your class sponsor and in the annual class election, Walter Kloc was elected president with Carol Hofmeister, Sharon Brown, and Jean Parrott elected to the offices of vice-president, treasurer and secretary. Sally Hunt was your Student Council representative. It was a busy year because you had to manage the refreshment booth at the football games and you sponsored dances, bake sales and skating parties all with your future goal, 'Graduation' in mind.“ Tonight, said Mr. Campbell, we have with us a few people whom you may recognize from your Junior year in high school. Let's see how good your memory is. A large number of people camefrom behind the curtain of 'Long Ago'. The first to be recognized was a group of masqueraders who came from the Halloween party, the Class of 1957 put on in their Junior year. Next came Mrs. Snow, Mrs. Hawthorne and friends, all of whom the class readily recognize as the cast from their Junior Play, Sno Haven. Mr. Robert Stickle who directed the play also accompani- ed the cast. The last group to come through the door of 'Long Ago' were all dressed in fancy formals and suits. They carried candy canes and lollipops. The class of 1957 was saddened when the memories repre- sented by the group came back to them. It was the Junior-Senior Prom they put on for the preceding Senior class. The theme was 'Candy Land' and under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Orion Cardew the event was a huge success. Mr. Campbell thumbing through his 'This is Your Life' book began again, The excitement built up by the fact that you are nearing your goal is forgotten when you lose your previous class sponsor and present teacher, the respected, Thelma J. Hunt. Elections for the next year's class president were held late that spring of 1956, and Ruth Ann Agar was elected over the many candidates for president. James MacTavish won the office of Student Council President in the spring election. This brought your Junior year to an end. After the commercial that divided the life story of the Class of 1957, Mr. Campbell concluded the story. The time has finally come and in September of 1956, your school ambition has come true - you are now officially Seniors. The 113 of you gained recognition as the largest graduating class Cass City High School had ever had. Ruth Ann, realizing the time was short, began her job immediately with the hope that the goal would'be reached with high honors. Carol Hofmeister was re-elected vice-president while Elaine Lounsbury was named secretary. Sharon Brown very ably took care of your funds for the third consecutive year. Walter Kloc repre- sented you at Student Council and Mr. Arthur Holmberg was your sponsor. 37 Calate It was a very busy year and you worked hard to make it a success. Your candy sales, bake sales and skating parties netted you excellent rewards. You got your first real taste of life as a Senior when you had your senior pictures taken, when you got measured for your caps gowns and when you ordered your announcements and name cards. Let us again see how your memory is working as we meet some old friends here to see you from your senior year at Cass City. The first person to gain recognition was Jean Martin who was elected Homecoming Queen and who reigned at the Homecoming Dance sponsored by the Seniors that night in October of '56. Next came a group of dancers from the 'Christmas Ball', the annual Christmas holiday dance put on by the Senior Class. The next group to come through the door of 'Long Ago' was Mr. and Mrs. Josslyn and their family who portrayed the cast from 'The Big Surprise', the Senior Play directed by Mr. Stickle and Mr. Johnson. Many other personalities came through that door of 'Long Ago' to remind the class of 1957 of their high school days. Among them was Mr. Bernard Elliot whom the Seniors featured at a Hypnotist Show. Master of ceremonies, Willis Campbell, continued with the last part of the life story. Early in the spring of 1957, eighteen members of your class gained recognition when they were enrolled in the National Honor Society. Much excitement and joy was yours when you received your senior pictures and cards to exchange with your classmates. The last social event you attended was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom given in your honor by the Junior class. The theme was 'Evening in Paris' and in the beautiful French ballroom you danced to music by the Velvetones. It was an evening you will long remember. Your final goal was near realization when you donned your caps and gowns and marched through town behind the band for swingout. This, Ladies and Gentlemen, brings the great life story of the Class of 1957 to a close. We have a few gifts for the class at this time. First, we are going to send you on a five day trip to New York City. You will be accompanied by Mr. Arthur Holmberg, Miss Patricia Hall, Mr. Harold Erickson and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Yedinak. You will leave by train from Imlay City on May 26 and spend a few hours in Niagara Falls before continuing on to the big city. When you return there will be special Baccalaureate services with Rev. Howard Woodard speaking on the subject, 'Seeking the Abundant Life'. Next we will honor you at Commencement Exercises. Here Dr. Henry Dykema will speak to you on the subject, 'The Commencing of What?' We will present to some of you awards and scholarships. To end your school days and make you alumni of Cass City High School. I, Willis Campbell, will personally award to each of you on this day, June 4, 1957, your well earned diploma.
