“
Foreword r “Life is a song--sing it. “ As the graduates of 1953 face life today, they join the mighty chorus of American youth. They know only too well that they are entering a world of resounding discords. But they have faith in the training that they have received and their ears are attuned to catch the “music of the spheres.' It is their part to restore to a portion of that world a semblance of harmony. They are prepared to keep the faith that will eventually restore both peace of mind and happiness of heart out of which flow the truest melody. Lead on, members of the class of 53. Like the bards of old, lead the w'orld in the happy song of hope and peace. And as you unfold your saga of deeds done thus far, plan your future carefully and well. Only thus may a progression of strong, sure chords lead you and yours in the grand finale of the perfect symphony of Life. 1 Dedicated To Jerome Root, Thco Hendrick, Louis Wright, William Patch, We, the Staff of 1953, in recognition of the continuous work they do to maintain the neat appearance of our school, the many tasks they perform in order to make all our activities successful, and the little acts of kindness by which they have endeared themselves to us all, do hereby dedicate this, our 1953 Perannos, to our custodians, Mr. Hendrick, Mr. Root, Mr. Wright, and Mr. Patch. Special honor is due Mr. Hendrick, who, for the pa$t fifteen years has been an untiring servant of students and teachers at Cass City High School. May good fortune follow you as you leave our school this year. Board of Education LEFT TO RIGHT: Superintendent Willis Campbell; Lester Ross. Secretary; Cameron Wallace. Trustee; Alice Donahue. Trustee; Frederick Pinney, Treasurer: Helen Baker. President. On behalf of the board of education, I wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Weatherhead and the department of journalism for another fine edition of the Perannos. By this medium they have expressed in words and pictures, the highlights of the school year. This book will be a source of pleasure for all those interested in our school. 3 Administration WILLIS CAMPBELL Superintendent MRS. We had one goal in mind --Graduation Day. We as Freshmen had one hundred and eight shy, bashful and undecided students. They wandered aimlessly from room to room, not knowing exactly where to go or what to do. We had for our class sponsor this year, a very dependable advisor, Mr. Harold Parker. We chose as our leaders; Bill Martus, president; Bob Fritz, vice-president; Arleon Kelley, secretary; and Roy Wagg, treasurer. After a short vacation we took our places as Sophomores at Cass City High School, but this time it didn’t seem quite so grim and a little more familiar. This year we chose as class officers; Grace Graham, president; Arleon Kelley, vice-president; Roy Wagg, secretary; and Joan Copeland, treasurer. Mr. Ackerman was our advisor this year. We had a few money making projects, and also had a few parties. When we enrolled in the fail of 1951 as Juniors at Cass City High School, it was less grim and seemed more like home. For the third lap of our journey wre chose, Arleon Kelley, president; Bob Wallace, vice-president; Joan Green, secretary; and Collen Ryan, treasurer, Mr. Cardew was our sponsor for this important year. We first presented a humorous play, “Good Night Ladies.” Between trying to make some money and getting ready for the annual Junior- Senior Banquet, “Paint The Town Pink.” Both Juniors and Seniors reported a very enjoyable evening of fun. Entering Cass City High School in the fall of 1952 we were at last Seniors. We all felt a little sad because we realized we were on our last lap of our high school journey. We chose for our class officers; Tim Burdon, president; Roy Wagg, vice-president; Bill Martus, secretary; and Bob Wallace, treasurer. Mr. Holmberg was our class sponsor. For our homecoming parade we chose Eunice Smith as our homecoming queen. Colleen Ryan and Mona Lee Howell were her court. For our annual homecoming parade a group of girls put on the boys football uniforms and rode on a float, which they had spent many hours decorating. We then had to settle down and make some money for our trip. We sponsored bake sales, proms, suppers, shows, and had a hypnotist show. “Cinderella’s Ball, the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, made us all realize that uation was not far away. The annual swingout program held on Monday, May 26, when Seniors first donned their caps gowns for the first time and march- down town behind the high school band. On Monday, June 1, we left on our Senior trip. We got on the boat in Detroit, on Monday morning. Then we went to Mackinac Island, and then on to Chicago. From Chicago we took a train back to Detroit, on Thursday, June 4. On June 7 our Baccalaureate services were held with Reverend Porter of the Methodist Church as the main speaker. On June 9, we all assembled, for the last time, in the auditorium for our Commencement exercises. Dr. John Stanley Harker, President of Alma College gave the main address of the evening. Bob Fox and Faith Parrott represented us as co-salutatorians and Joan Holmberg delivered the valedictorian address for our class. When eighty-eight Seniors clad in caps and gowns marched across our high school stage to receive their diplomas we then realized our happy high school days had come to an end. 21 Nearing the end of high school days--Baccalaureate How We Know Them Class Prophecy The time is June, 1978, the scene is the Auslander Community House at the Cass City recreation park (donated by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Auslander, she the former Marjorie Holcomb, who have since retired on the revenue from the oil royalties found on their farm) A committee is checking the last minute preparations for a reunion which is to take place the same evening. The chairman of the committee is Dr. Donald Tuckey, others are Mrs. William Martus, formerly Marilyn Rocheleau; Mrs. Graydon Agar, formerly Jane Hunt; Auctioneer, Jack Gallagher; Supt. of School, Bob Fox; and Cass City’s coach, Stanley Guinther. It is now eight P.M. and people are starting to fill up the auditorium. Coach Tim Burdon of Central Michigan College is the master of ceremonies. He is getting to- gether the people who are to sit at the speak- ers ' table. Reverend Arleon Kelley, who will give the invocation, with his wife, the former Eunice Smith; Annette Pinney, with the Chicago Symphony who will give a recital; the great comedian team, Bill Zinnecker Don Bartle; and guest of honor, Faith Parrott, first lady governor of the new Re- formation Party. By the time the meal was over each one was quite up-to-date on what everyone had been doing for the past twenty-five years. Each one was asked to tell about the person on his left. This is what came out: Mary A. Anthes and Jennie Lis have been the co-editors of the Cass City Chronicle for the past five years. Theron Hopper, Donald Hanby and Bob McArthur are the operators of the local recreation hall. Jack Connell is the game warden for the state of Michigan. Joyce Merchant, Ann MacTavish and Colleen Ryan are nurses at the Municipal Hospital. Robert Kitchen is the editor-in- chief of the magazine, “Muscle Power”. Jim Ware is the star catcher for the Detroit Tigers. Joan Copeland and Audrey Behr have been running a “Heart and Harmony Club” for old women, since I960. Dean Kritzman and his family are living in Bad Axe where he has a permanent job with WLEW. Lyle Ludlow' has a high position with Ringling Bros. Circus, as their vet- erinarian. Jim Munroe manages a depend- able taxi service in Gagetown. Joan Caister and Harley Dorman signed a contract with MGM after high school and have been with them ever since. Mona L. Howell has worked her way up to a prominent Lawyer in New York. Kathleen Auten married Art Warner soon after graduation, she and her family live in Detroit. Marion Cooley and Geraldine Anker both have important sec- retarial jobs in California. Valerie Deering and her husband own and manage a famous night club in Hollywood. Janice James is teaching now at Michigan State College. Carter and Ted Schad are in partnership on a ranch in Texas. Marion Sefton and Janet Bruce are saleswomen at the J. L. Hudson Co. Ilene Smithson and Marjorie Spencer are efficient waitresses in one of New York's famous restaurants. Andy Wise and Carl Keller are pilots for TWA air- lines, with Donna Profit and Linda Lowe both as a stewardess. Florence Leazenby and her husband live in Cass City and are both employed at the local factory. Joan Green and her husband live in Kingston where she teaches school. Carolyn Rayl and W ilda Zemeke are operators of a very successful beauty shop. Mason Cook has become a famous “hot rod” racer in Kokomo, Indiana, 23 Ron Peters, Ron Bukowski and Wilbur Dorman are all prosperous farmers in this locality. Hazel Hartwick is the commercial teacher in the local school. Ed Cutler and Bob Tesho are private investigators for the F.B.l. Charles Martinek owns and operates a dairy farm in Ohio. Marjorie Peasley is the loving and devoted wife of the local Methodist minister. Richard Easton and Raymond Spaulding are both commissioned officers in the army. LeRoy Vahovick manages a profitable gas station in this area. Jean Kritzman is happily married to a wealthy businessman. Calvin Puskas has acquired the title heavy-weight boxer of the world. Sherlock Frederick has a successful horse ranch in Wyoming. Margaret Willerton and Shirley Vargo run a day nursery in Detroit. Charles Hempton has become a famous western cowboy. Stanley Beach has certainly come into the money, he designs cars for the Ford Motor Company. Roy Wagg just retired after several years of farming. It was very amazing as to how many class members were present at the reunion. Of course there were some members that were unable to come. There was a letter of regret from each one that was not able to attend. Robert Fritz and Carl Gohsman were on important business in Washington and sent their regards. Jeanne Field, Beverly Bird, Doris Copland and Velma Cooper have made a career in the navy and of course were not able to attend. Joan Holmberg was on a tour with the Metropolitan Opera Company and was out of the country at the time. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wallace, she the former Beatrice Leslie, were unable to attend. He is the coach at Western Michigan College and a game had been scheduled for that day. Douglas Stewart is a captain in the army and was on special duty. It was an accepted fact that this class had outstanding ability as it went through high school. As you can see the class is still living up to that reputation. 24 Shirley and Roy Bill and Marilyn Eunice and Arlcon Lad and Lassie Joan and Elwyn Guess Who??’? Aren’t we cute ? ? ? Ball Z1 The Auditorium on the night of (May I, 1953) Last Will and Testament We , the undersigned, in September 1949 were afflicted with a terrible disease known as High School Education. Having withstood for four years the ravages of that disease, we, the Class of “1953 , having survived the past examinations which endanger the welfare and our diplomas do hereby and now declare this our last will and testament: To the janitors, we leave our ability to keep the halls so tidy. To the faculty, we just leave. To Virjean and Mrs. Brown, a pair of rol- ler skates to save their shoe leather. To the Juniors, we leave our leftover brains, they might need them. To the Sophomores, we leave our old pencil stubs, the unused notebooks and battered textbooks. To the Freshmen, we bequeath our bold- ness and dignity. To the school, and community we leave the empty seats on the Varsity Squad. I, Graydon Agar, being of warped mind and sticky fingers will my ability to “borrow football practice jerseys without getting caught to Russ Foy. I, Mary Ann Anthes, will my ability to keep my temper on the bus, even with Russ Schneeberger around, to Sharon Parmer. I, Dick Auslander, being of sound mind and body will my nickname of “Big Oz“ to Allen Merchant. I, Kathleen Auten, will my ability to go steady with a guy who has a younger sister in school to check up on you to any girls who think it isn’t hard. 1, Mary Ellen Baker, being of questionable mind and body, do hereby will to Caren Cummings an autographed picture of Tom Schwaderer. I, Geraldine Anker, will to Jeanette Neal my shorthand book in hopes she gets more out of it than I did. I, Don Bartle, will all my good citizenship marks in government to my underclass friend s. I, Stan Beach, being of very unsound mind and body, will my ability to carry three subjects and still flunk two to Russ Foy and Dean Hoag, who aren’t too smart. I, Beverly Bird, will my page on the Cass- mopolitan to anyone who would like it. 1, Ron Bukowski, came with nothing and leave nothing to Ron VanAllen. I, Tim Burdon, being of sound mind and body, (I think) will to Ed Fox my big shoes in the hopes that he will fill them out some- day: To Russ Foy the ability to stay in every night during the week (which he doesn't) like I did for three years, and finally to my underclassmen who think they can get away with it my luck of not ever having been injured while playing football. 1, Joanne Caister, will my height to my sister Janet, I think she (Could use it. I, Jack Connell, hereby will my chair in sociology class, to any underclassmen who thinks he or she can stand it for a year.
