Finishing 5 and 19 wasn't quite what the Warriors and Coach Throneburg had in mind for the new basketball season. However, as the fates would have it, new head Coach Throneburg and his Warriors had to endure a season of ,lessons learned. Sometimes the inexperienced Warriors weren't up to the task, and other times the ball always seemed to bounce against them. The season did have two highpoints: the first tvas the night tve stunned Marshall in round one of the LIC Tourney. Playing the role of the underdog wasn't easy for Casey and when the gun sounded we had come through 55-52. The other highlight was the game against Martinsville. Even though we were beaten 41-38, tve had come closer than the Streaks had dreamed to beating them. Warrior Pride was and is intact. Ronnie Weaver was held on the shoulders of his teammates as he was the hero the night we defeated Marshall in the LIC Journey. 80 Mike's monster move. SENIORS (R1, L to R) Thro neb u rii K. Finke. Z e TOUt t 70 Uf 7 e Tout t« 70Uf Coach Denny Throneburg has lookedat life from both sides now. Struggling through a basketball season which ended with a record well below 500, Coach T. picked up his ball and glove and said to himself, We shall not be deniedHis team was up to the task. Willing to sacrifice social life, and even studying time, the Lady Warriors practiced long and hard. Their precisioned drills grew more perfect as the season wore on and in the end the gold medal hung around each neck. Lana Davis was asked to take the ball from former star, Julie Collins. She didn't fill Julie's shoes — she made her own tracks and her season can only be described as stellar. Palestine, Robinson, Newton, Clay City, and Albion would fall to the Warriors in regional sectional play. At Pekin the girls had little trouble downing opponents Spring Valley and Carthage in the first two rounds. The Championship game was no different as Casey easily defeated Lemont 7 to 0 to become Class A champs. The day was June 3rd and Casey at the Bat was 100 years old — but there was joy in Casey, for Mighty Casey did not strike out! (Ml £cuuZ ' 4futcf Lana Davis and her pitching style found its own place in Casey Softball history. The Lady Warriors were made of good stock. Nurtured through the Casey softball program, most of the girls were seasoned veterans who knew how to handle pressure and stress; their dedication paid off. Many records belong to the Warriors, but the early press date for the FLAME doesn't allow us time to mention them this year. At the state level. Barb Blome, Tory Koss, Terri Freeman, and Angie Rankin were named to the All-Tourney team. Lana Davis, however, was the brightest star as she was also named to the All-Tourney team and selected as the Tournament MVP! i Terri Freeman played out her dream season this year as a senior. Once a mere stat keeper for Coach Throneburg's Lady Warriors, Terri persevered until she became a bench warmer, a sometime player, and finally this year a starter. And what a starter! She hit well and was an inspirational leader to her teammates. She plans to play softball at Millikin. Terri at the bat... Tory currently holds these state records: most runs scored in tourney (6); state championship games in career (4); games played at state level (12); She tied these records: runs scored in single game (3); hits in a single game (4); at bats in championship game (4). Good luck, Tory! Tory's dedication and style of play brought her plaudits from not only us, but also from opponents; she's one in a million! Freshman M. Speeches were given by the class Valedictorians and Salutatorian: Kevin Finke, Kirk Black, Tory Koss, and Abby Burson. Special music was presented by the senior members of the choir, Clayton Spicer, and the high school band. Rev. Philip Icenogle spoke during the early part of the ceremony. The student speakers reviewed class memories, expressed thank you's to parents and teachers, and spoke of meeting challenges and reaching goals. The Class of '88 also presented their mothers with flowers during the graduation festivities. The heat has become a tradition at Casey's graduation, but a great deal of the warmth came from the class as they said their goodbyes. Mike made it! All of the student speakers were sincere in wishing their classmates the best of luck. (2 Z44 'XX This page sponsored by Larsson, Woodyard, Henson — CPA. Looks like we made it!
