FLAME 1986 BUILDING A NEW TRADITION AT CASEY-WESTFIELD UNIT C-4 In the fall of 85 the Casey and Westfield school districts consolidated. The halls became a bit more crowded, there were more anxious faces than usual, and the frehmen weren’t the only students feeling a little in awe of it all. However, much was the same: the opening day lectures by the faculty, the lockers that were jammed, the shortage of books in some classes, and the monster first day study halls. Within a few weeks, however, we began to blend and soon new friendships were made. Together, we set out as Casey-Westfield Unit C-4 to Build A New Tradition. Now this is cool... Building A Dayna's big break! I remember this now. Me and my FLAME. This page sponsored by Casey Lions Club tespanolanyone? New Tradition The Homecoming, Illinois Arts Week, and the Variety Show gave us opportunities to grow together within the first five weeks of school. The FLAME signing party was a huge success with 200 in attendance. School was off to a running start and what lay ahead was the stuff ‘‘traditions are made of.” Hey, sign my FLAME! Was this a coincident? THE HOMECOMING PARADE: RESTAURANT THEME First Place Float: FAME COUNCIL May we see your ticket for that seat, Mark? The student council selected fast food restaurants as the Homecoming theme. Illinois PECIAL SENIOR CLASS, ’86 The class of '86 was indeed a special group. Rich in talent in all areas, this class left its mark and big shoes to fill. The senior football players led their teammates to the top of the mountain and the feeling was great. In all other sports areas, Casey — led by the seniors of '86 was there fighting for the conference championship and post season honors. In the arts the senior class took many of the leads and led the way to successful productions and excellent ratings in contests. Their achievements have set the standards for the classes who follow them. In academics there was much competition in the class of '86 for perfection. The number of those in the race for top academic honors was proof of this. Many of the club offices were held by seniors; perhaps not unusual, but still noteworthy. There were disappointments. They didn't win every game or contest and not every member of this class will conquer the world. Some failed to make the grade or the team, and others no longer felt those goals important even at this early stage of life. However, one aspect was truly different about this class: they captured the affection of their home community. Attendance at sporting and fine art productions was large. Our school became the social center of town and our performance halls and athletic fields became the place to be. As our bond grew emotionally with the young men and women who represented our school on all grade levels, we knew that the class of '86 was setting a new pace. The class of '86 is gone — but not forgotten. en u At Beating Martinsville. 48 Compliments of Markwell Funeral Home JEAN ANN ALBERT MICHAEL STEPHEN ALLISON STEPHANIE JO BAKER JAY T. Aaron was ready to attack! 1 This page sponsored by Garver’s Spray Service 63 Many were called — only one team answered: Casey. The hopes of the Warriors fans began early. This group of young men had captured the limelight of the community. There was a special magic between the fans and the team whenever the Warriors took to the field. As fans we did little cheering during the early going. The squad didn't seem to need cheers; our attendance was enough. From game to game the Warrior machine moved with precision. Only once during the regular season did they even trail, 9 to 0 to Argenta-Oreana. In the second half, the tribe's quarterback, Sauer, found the receiver, Finke, and Casey would triumph 14-9. Teams such as Westville, Tuscola, Sesser, Albion, Atwood-Hammond, Oblong, and Martinsville didn’t have a chance. Our arch rival Marshall may have been the luckiest team of air. The Casey-Marshall game was forfeited to Casey due to the teacher strike in Marshall. The playoffs began on the rain-soaked muddy field of Zeigler-Royalton. To add to the misery, Casey trailed early 12 to 0. However, Blair and Maulding gained badly needed yardage and the Warriors would prevail 22 to 20 in the game, which in reality, would be the toughest game for the Warriors on the road to the state championship. Dupo, Marora-Forsyth, Hamilton, and Woodstock-Marion Central Catholic would fall easily to the Warriors — either becaue of the “air game or the classy “ground game” the Warriors kept a secret until late in the season. In the end, the team, the community, and the coach could sum it up in one word: “awesome.” Back in Casey on championship night, the fans awaited the victorious tribe. A thunderous applause unlike any heard before in Casey greeted the fighting Warriors. Did we really understand their great achievement? Did we appreciate their ability, their style, and their dedication? As with any success, the memory lingers. In the years to come, others will read these pages, look at the pictures, and admire the stats. But only those of us who witnessed it, felt it, and dreamed of it, will really cherish the moment when 45 individuals were decorated with the gold medallion — the one that means STATE CHAMP! 64_________________________________________ We are the CHAMPIONS... The Casey Warriors of ’85-’86 had the distinction of ending the season with the best winning percentage of any team ever to walk the halls of CHS. Along with those 23 victories and only 3 defeats came many exciting and memorable moments and four new modern school records. Among them were: winning point margin (20.5), points allowed opponents (48.8), and field goal percentage for season (51%). One of the season highlights was the second place finish in the prestigious and highly competitive Charleston Holiday Tournament. Teutopolis — the eventual State Class A Champions would play the Warriors one of the closest games of their undefeated season. Coach Durham’s Warriors were undefeated in conference games, thus becoming the LIC Champs. Later, they easily defeated Martinsville in the championship game of the Conference Tournament. Another Warrior Pride” game was a hard fought battle in February. The Warriors upended the Trojans of Charleston in one of the most pressure-packed games of the season. A few days later, the squad wore down an inspired team in Effingham. With a super year behind them, the Warriors finished second in the Regional bringing to an end our finest season ever. Many good teams (some great), have walked these halls, but few tugged at our heart strings like this one. We pay tribute to Jeff who because of his style, size and natural athletic ability brought Casey and his teammates much attention. Jeff's success didn't stop in the athletic arena. A straight A student, he also held offices in various clubs and was four times elected President of the class of '86. As of this year he is the owner of eight STATE records in football. But the game he chose to play in college is basketball, and he earned the right to fulfill a dream. After graduation, Jeff would take part of all who knew him, coached him, and performed with him to the U. of I. Whatever happens there is in other hands; what happened at CHS is history. Eighteen times they tasted victory — equalling the greatest number of wins by any previous girl's team. Injuries and illness befell them and three starters (Ragon, Davis, and Ramsay), missed several games between them. But the bench and the healthy” members kept the squad alive. Season highlights included the LIC Tourney championship and first place in the conference and Paris Tournament. When state-ranked Argenta entered our gym in February, after the LIC Tourney, the crowd was small. Little did we know this would be the most exciting game of the week and the season. Coming from behind, the Lady Warriors prevailed. They had not given up and that was the thing that most characterized this team. Unfortunately, the regional division found us facing Teutopolis — the eventual state champion. However, T-Town will remember one night in Cumberland, a team known as the Lady Warriors almost pulled off an upset. Our season ended that night, but our Warrior Pride had stayed intact. Girl’S Basketball ’86 the winning tradition continues Team Members: R 1, L to R: L. Davis, L. Gilbert, C. Wattleworth, B. Knothe, S. Loehr, K. Crowder, R 2: S. Montgomery, L. Ramsay, D. Davis, D. The Lady Warriors dressed twelve girls for the varsity games, but it was no secret that the backbone of the spirited squad sprang from the class of '86 — the Seniors. We looked to Dayl to “do it all, and she did. Debbie rebounded 174 times and her coach described her as the most improved. Steph was the icing on the cake” — the team player at both ends of the floor. Dawn’s defense and rebounding kept us in each game. Lynn was as unselfish on the court as we knew her off the court and had the best defensive feet on the team. With all their talent, however, the legacy they left behind was not just a winning record, but something better — HOW to win: through dedication, style and practice. That is Warrior Pride! However, under the direction of Coach Carrell and through the dedication of the track athletes, this image is changing. Of course, winning and otherwise being successful helps, seeing hard work pay off helps — but most of all being 1st in the STATE (1600 Meter Relay Team) helps! Building on this achievement is now the challenge of the new look in track. Fourteen seemed to be the number of the year as the Warrior tracksters sent fourteen to state and broke fourteen school records. The state competition in track is held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Thousands from across the state packed O'Brien Field. As Ronnie Maulding overtook the leader in the 1600 Relay it was as if the whole state was rooting for Casey. It was a grand sight for a relay team who had worked very hard for the gold medal they would soon wear around their necks. Without a doubt, however, the highlight of the season was the Regional Championship. Cumberland had defeated the Warriors earlier and so the revenge factor was in control; this time the team from Casey would prevail and in grand style: 12 to 5. Finke and Webster led the Warriors offensively and Squires and Sauer took charge of the mound. Also during baseball fever Tim Blair signed to play football at Wheaton, Paul Sauer agreed to quarterback at Valpariso, and Mike Webster signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Rose Hulman. Mike also became a Dream Guy finalist in a TEEN Magazine contest. With such a talented and varied group of individuals, it was a tribute to this team that they were able to concentrate and come through with their first regional win in five years. Paul. Mike and Tim — the night they signed athletic agreements. Jeff Finke would become the first player in Illinois history to play in three All-Star games (football, basketball, baseball). The softball team under the ■avaHKfcTVrMf disciplined hand of Coach ■ Throneburg was to live up to expectations. Rated number one in the state from the beginning of the season — the Lady Warriors never faltered, never lost sight of their ultimate goal, and never took a game for granted. Far above most teams in talent, desire, and softball skills, many games seemed only “practice. But the “Ladies persevered — creating their own challenges and then demanding more and more of themselves. On an early road trip to the Chicago area, a team from Lockport would defeat the Warriors — the only blemish of a season 31 games long. In our own area, Oblong was another good team. However, the regional championship would belong to Casey over the Lady Panthers, 5-2. Lynn rounds third and heads for home Talking it over Interesting signal' Stace! He recognized each player at the assembly in the gym and then dedicated his part of the trophy to the memory of an older sister. JULIE COLLINS MVP AT STATE The softball season may not have been a fairy tale, but Julie Collins became the princess of the state tournament. Each game the crowd oohed and ahhed at the Casey warm-up. but that was only the prelude to the performance of Julie. She pitched three shutouts, (the championship game a no-hitter), set records in strike outs, (14 in championship game; 36 total in three games), and was selected as the MVP. There should be more great days in the sun for Casey's princess of soft-ball, but it is unlikely that any day will surpass the day in June of ‘86 when she, along with her teammates, became the best in the state! The Class of '86 brought us many pleasures while enjoying their own successes. Approximately twenty of them earned scholarships or grants to institutes of higher learning and, of course, they left behind the special memories of athletic achievements — especially in this, The Year of the Warrior. Other classes will come and go, but few will achieve more success and admiration than the '86 Seniors. Thanks and Good Luck! Since 1927 the gym has held the graduation ceremony; tonight it would house the first graduation of Casey-Westfield Unit C-4. The graduates would wait the signal to begin the processional. Smiling for the camera one more time. Many of the graduates move their tassel showing that graduation has finally happened!
