You could buy them in almost every color and wear them with almost any outfit. They were made of a flexible plastic that helped to create one of the most comfortable shoes ever. Many students were in fashion without breaking their pocketbook; they treated their feet to jelly-shoes. Several of our students have adopted these cute and cuddly kids. These dolls were at the top of the Christmas lists of many boys and girls alike this year. Some names for these dolls were )ared Michael and Davis Dicky for boys, or Kelsey Renee and Madonna Suzanne for girls. The owners of these life-like dolls have sent in the proper papers and have made everything official for ownership. No matter the age the Cabbage Patch doll was the rage in 1985. My nickname is Pita and while I stayed with the Kaufmans here in Casey I attended school at C H S. for the years of '84-'85. I enjoyed myself and learned many things other than just improving my English skills. I made many new friends whom were both helpful and understanding. Someday I hope to return to Casey and visit with my new family. Now I can return to Mexico and share all my memories of Casey High with eVery°ne Thank You, Pita. Having fun at Drama Club Christmas Party Pita pictured in her first snow. Maria Guadalupe Trejo Diaz, Pita, was our Rotary Exchange student for the 1984-85 school year at C H S. She is from Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico and while in Casey she lived with the David Kaufman family. Pita enjoyed many new and interesting experiences while staying in our community. Especially she made many new friends. Her being with us was indeed a step toward more understanding between nations. 60 Her American family: the Kaufmans Dressed up1 Her special day Girls tennis was once again a pleasant experience for Coach Mike Noble as two of his players, Dayl Ragon and Lynn Ramsay went to state. He threw 22 TD's and 6, 2-point conversions This places Paul 3rd in all time passing yardage for one season in Illinois. This was a season of growth for the gridiron Warriors. Should I go out for football? seemed to be the question of the summer. However, when the hot August arrived, 50 stalwart athletes showed up to face facts: the Warriors were young, inexperienced, and the defensive line so strong in the past was silently — but obviously absent. The little team that appeared that day was a mixture: some, the big boys ready to achieve, the other returnees out to make the starting team, and finally, the bunch of rookies who would complete the squad. Coach Sinclair, his staff, and the band of Warriors pulled together and within a few weeks, they would emerge from the independent ranks as a play-off contender and the owners of many state records. There was a celebration of good will in Casey when our heroes defeated Marshall. It was a special feeling as a line of cars waited to greet the Warriors as a small display of fireworks hit the sky and warmed our hearts. It hurt when Dupo beat us later in the playoffs, but the crew of Warriors, plus the 12th man — their fans, had tasted of victory once more. The passing attack had given us an added weapon, and the small, but determined offensive line had parted the Red Sea of Marshall and Coach Sinclair was heard to say, I'm the happiest Coach in the world. This team had done what few had expected; against many odds they had become winners in every sense of the word. 65 Seniors: R 1, L to R: S. Keeney, C. Smith, ). Glidewell. K. Stoops, T Martin, K. The Warriors began the season with an impressive third place finish in the Charleston Holiday Tournament. This was especially rewarding as our Warriors defeated state ranked Effingham to win the right to advance in the winner's bracket. Casey also won the conference with an undefeated record. However, Old Man Upset'' was once again to invade the hopes and dreams of the basketball Warriors and their fans. Our neighbors to the east, the Bluestreaks, became the team of destiny in '85. We win this, we win that and then in the end, we'll be state champs. For most teams that is only a fantasy. A few seasons ago, our football team was 2nd in the state. From that time, Casey has learned that a state championship is possible on the high school level. We have also learned it isn't easy to do so! The Lady Warriors made it look simple for most of the season. However, behind those easy victories were hours of practice and drills and lessons in strategy. Because of the lateness of the State Tourney we are not able to include season ending stats. We held off long enough for that championship game and unfortunately the Lady Warriors, defeated 1 to 0, were to finish second. Montgomery, Ramsay, Stephen, Davis and Collins made the All-State team along with teammate Dayl Ragon who also was the Tourney MVP. Fine Arts students often find themselves walking to the beat of a different drum, here at CHS. While many students are shooting baskets, playing catch, or jumping hurdles, most of our arts students are practicing piano, pushing the voice up a scale, reaching a high note on a clarinet, or placing finishing touches on a painting. Their work is frequently unnoticed by many, but not by those who notice sunsets, appreciate the blue of a spring sky, hear rhythm in the rustling of the trees, or applaud the speech of a character on stage. To these fine arts students seeking excellence — your drum is welcome! It makes our school a more vital place. 109 Spelling Fame, I to R: Council Members: B Pinnick, R. Gilbert, D. Stephen, S. However, if we examine this statement more closely we find this belief suspect. The past year reflected many real world happenings here, as well as in our country and we were affected by them. To those of us who are Caseyites school will continue much as it has in the past. In truth, however, after 93 years and 90 graduation ceremonies, Casey High — as only Casey High is no more. Next year the Westfield-Casey consolidation becomes reality and we will become Casey-Westfield Unit C-4. The Warriors nickname and the purple and gold colors will remain. As a result of consolidation and other situations, rumors of changes in coaching and teaching assignments became rampant, and the school system experienced a conflict with the media. In the fall. President Reagan was easily re-elected and the Cubs finally won a title. The )r. High softball team won the State Tournament. World hunger became a more obvious problem and famous musicians combined to record for the cause, We Are the World. The restoration of the Statue of Liberty was still underway and Chicago hoped for a World's Fair. Salmonella poisoning became a household term. in the spring we learned that Coach Bennett would no longer be our nemesis. Tax cuts, an airline strike, the dollar value in Europe, Reagan's visit to Germany, foreign unrest, rumors of a major league baseball strike, and drug investigations hit the headlines — and at Casey High, a bomb threat. Businesses closed, others opened, and a new factory was on its way to Casey. The Lady Warriors softball team was headed for the state tourney where they would finish second. Prince, Bruce, Michael, Dr. Who, Billy Martin, Doug Flutie, Sandberg, Sutcliffe, Hernadez, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird — and a woman — Ferraro ran for V.P. of the U.S. Dynasty and Dallas continued and The Cosby Show became a hit. Coke changed its recipe and Pepsi touted itself as the choice of a new generation — and so did Marino and Montana. Nutra Sweet saved us from calories and Marvelous Marvin Hagler became famous. Boy George? Madonna? The first yearbook of CHS in 1922 was simply titled The Souvenir. In 1925, The Flame was first published and was dedicated to the parents of the Senior class. Leafing through those early pages gives one a true feeling of nostalgia. Many old traditions are worth keeping, but change is also good for the soul of a school. Perhaps it's time we rid our vocabulary of such words as awesome and replace it with integrity. In a sense, we have an opportunity to begin anew. We have the chance to improve and combine our positive qualities and perhaps erase the poor ones. Thus, it is with some sadness that we say good-bye to Unit C-1; but, it is with excitement that we look forward to the future of Casey-Westfield Unit C-4.
