Club shirts and sports shirts sporting the names of Warriors and Casey are often seen on underclassmen and upperclassmen as well. This school year was exciting in many ways. From the popular 1HSA Playoff shirt of the football season, to the new, now traditional Homecoming shirt — CHS is often wearing not only purple and gold, but other national brand shirts as well. To the fads of the 80s, especially T-shirts, we dedicate this FLAME. Homecoming came early this year, September 24th. The theme Space Fantasy was carried out well by the classes. Our Warriors easily defeated Cumberland 35-0. The gym, decorated with stars and tinsel, was a lovely background for the coronation of Carole Carlson as the “82” Homecoming Queen. Color Us Purple and Gold!! playoffs” had cn just an expression to the Casey Warriors and to most of the LIC. The ’74 Warriors advanced to the quarter finals and Marshall won two games in ’79. As the ’82 football season approached. the Warriors were picked “maybe second,” in the Conference. Everyone said, “Next year - that’s Casey’s year.” The first game of the season spelled doom for the Warriors as West Vigo defeated us 14-8. Some, who had a greater insight, however, felt that even though we played less than desirable, there was something waiting to be ignited! Little did Casey or the LIC realize that even though our season began with a loss, it set the stage for The Excitement of beating Cumberland in the Homecoming Clash! SPACE I FflWTWSV The ’82 Warriors: Second in State! Thus, the Warriors’ defeated at first, strove on. Leaving contenders Oblong and Martinsville behind them, the climb on the warpath would only get tougher. Stopping Marshall was to be their next great conquest. With this victory would come a trip to the State playoffs which for the Warriors, would end on the turf in Bloomington!!! Warriors on the Warpath in 82 Game Scores: We They 8 W. Richard looks . . Then We Took on Tough Tuscola!! Then East St. Louis and Victory Was Ours!! WINNING!!! Anything for extra luck ... Finally the Trip to “ISU in ’82” The students said goodbye and good luck . . . All of the area had eyes for “only Casey.” Newspapers wrote stories about us and reporters interviewed our players, coaches and teachers. The citizens of Casey traveled miles to see the “dream team” and merchants painted their windows. Ex-CHS students, now attending college or living elsewhere, chanted Warrior slogans. For what seems like now, only a fleeting moment, Casey and its Warriors were all that mattered. So to Bloomington the caravan journeyed and with it, hopes and dreams for a once in a lifetime game. 22 Richard and Todd meditation And the cheerleaders cheered! Watchful Warren Finke runs for it! Casey and its chicken were ready The action of the game belonged to Central. Their play, the turf and our lack of championship experience proved to be too much for us to overcome. Blade. S. Puterbaugh. L. Blair. The girl's team led by Senior Dee Crouch, Lori Blade and Li zz Blair began the season trying to live up the surprising finish of the ’82 season. These three, along with four year player Jennifer Wright, Camille Ashley, and Mary Lynn Dippold, would lead the War-riorettes to their fourth straight Conference Tournament Championship. Rugged and talented, this team was headed full strength into the second half of the season. Warrior Basketball: Building for ’84 The Warriors began the season with a potentially talented and young team. Minus the basketball playing football players, the Warriors and Coach Durham turned to Junior Todd Shoot, Soph. Steve Philippi, and Fr. Tim Blair for leadership in the Thanksgiving Tourney at Newton. With other underclassmen and Senior Bruce Decker, the Warriors struggled. but gained some valuable experience. Returning home, the Warriors won four games in a row as Fr. Jeff Finke, Srs. Warren and Cummins, combined with Jr. Phil Brandenburg to show that Warrior Power was alive on the basketball court. With Shoot completing the starting five, this team began to put a full effort on the floor. However, our hopes for the conference and tourney championship faded. After losing conference games to Marshall and Oblong we bounced back and defeated Cumberland and Oblong in the Tourney, but ended up second to a talented and experienced Westfield. Going into the last month of the season, the Warriors needed to work on fundamentals; their fans now looked to the Regional and next year — as the eyes of the future fell on the hopefully broad shoulders of the '84 Seniors and the expectations of one Jeff Finke. This tourney saw the stylish play of Westfield’s Brian Hupp, Freshman Jeff Finke of Casey make the all Tourney team (perhaps one of the few Freshmen to do so), and the walk out of the Marshall players. Nevertheless, after this unfortunate incident the Warriors and Eagles played a game of class. Casey was to be second — for the second year in a row. Time Out for Athletes: Winter Sports Banquet All teams had good seasons, especially our freshman and sophomore boys. The freshmen, coached by Keith Sinclair, went 12-2. The sophomore team had a record of 5-3, and the JV squad ended their season with a 12-6 mark and a conference record of 6-1. The Varsity Boys under Coach Bob Durham ended with a 14-12 season record. Once again the girls had an exceptional year, also. The Lady Warriors won 17 games and lost only 7. Up. up and away!! 137 One Last Glance at CHS in ’83 BEV CRUSE PHOTOGRAPHY 14 West Cumberland Martinsville, IL 26442 1-382-4421 One of the most popular questions Ms. Rich-arrds hears all year is, “When are our pictures coming in?” Often her reply is: “Yearbook is a thankless job. As soon as the pictures come. I’ll pass them out. I’m not hiding them!” However, when one stops to think what better way do we have of reserving memories than through pictures? BEV CRUSE, an ex-Warrior herself has been more dedicated to CHS than some of our own students. Rushing to all of the football playoff games and in the process, taking over 200 color shots wasn't easy. Pulling for our basketball players and other athletes and trying to capture these special moments is a rewarding job — yes, but also a meticulous one. Nevertheless, whether it’s making reprints for students, filming the dress rehearsal of the play, taking publicity shots, making a black and white photo for a teacher, copying another lost pic for the FLAME staff, or rushing over for a special noon hour group shot, Bev is here, and she does all FLAME pictures for free!! So — the next time you wonder where your picture is, remember this: at last count — this year alone, Bev had taken over 1,300 pictures of CHS. Yours will be here soon!! Thank You Bev!! Bev may find you at a pep rally. at the Pizza Hut after a game. 140 or at school in the classroom . .. “We Go Bananas in the IGA.” Ted and Roberta Ahrens 141 “Granddad Does it Right” KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN Rt.49 Casey, IL tm Congratulations Seniors BIGGS AND RICHARDS At the Intersection of Routes 49 and 40 932-2950 Farm Equipment -'CASEY BOWL THE REDMANS Phone 932-2110 HAUMESSER FURNITURE STORE 16 E.
