Homecoming Pep Games The Year In Pictures Homecoming events spanned two days this year, October 6th and 7th. The Thursday afternoon parade used the theme of commercials. First place prize went to the senior class for their takeoff on the Raid commercial. The coronation took place on the football field Thursday night. This year's queen, Julie Hardway, was crowned by Greg Sidwell and escorted by Rod Shull. Members of the Queen's Court were Jackie Mathews, Kathy Whitton, Kim Farley and Jennie Cummins. Although Casey lost the football game by a narrow margin (in a steady downpour of rain), the dance in the old gym was a success. Repairs being done on the new gym prevented its use for the dance and corona -tion. 14 Important People Such As . . . Varsity players David Collins, Bryan Cramer, Bob Ra-gon, Eric Kusterman, Trag Bailey, Jed Richardson, Brad Burson and Ron Snyder made it all possible. The Warriors finished the year collecting two trophies - the Regional Championship for the third straight year and the second place trophy in the Little Illini Conference. Many compliments have been made about Senior guard, David Collins, not the least being - 1 'probably the best player ever to play at Casey High School, Collins has become somewhat of a legend in his own time.11 This praise was from Ron Isbell, editor of the Casey Daily Reporter. In case it has escaped anyones attention, David Collins is one fine ballplayer . This list of statistics should explain why. ALL STATE GUARD SCHOOL RECORD FOR MOST POINTS IN SINGLE GAME - 52 MOST POINTS IN A SINGLE SEASON - 997 MOST POINTS IN A CAREER - 1977 (that's not the year) MOST FREE THROWS IN SUCCESSION - 35 MOST FREE THROWS MADE - 287 HIGHEST SCORING AVERAGE -36.8 per game HIGHEST CAREER FREE THROW PERCENTAGE - 8894 (this one is possibly a state record, as yet unconfirmed) David's coach called him a magician, , the Reporter called him the best ever , the class of 1978 call him just Dave. The Flame staff salutes him as a giant - we believe this to be the first time a single player has been honored in this manner on the yearbook pages - but take heart all you short People our giant is only 5 feet 9Vi inches tall! 29 SENIOR MIKE CONNELLY Above: BRAD BURSON Left: Senior BRIAN CRAMER and ERIC KUS-TERMAN ACTION! 1978 UH . MIKE SIMPSON In the spring of 1978 when you talked about track you talked about Mike Simpson. This season Mike set a new school record in the 100 yd. dash -9.7, in the 440 yd. dash - 49.17 and was a member of the 440 yd. relay team which set a new record of 45.11. Simpson also had the honor to be nominated to the Decatur Area Best Event. A second honor came in the form of an invitation from the AAU to join their high school and college track team for a two week tour of four European competitions. On Honors Day it was announced that the Casey High School coaching staff had named Mike the Male Athlete of the Year, an honor that he is sharing with David Collins (see page 37). At press time Simpson had qualified for the state finals in four events: the 100 yd. dash, the 220 yd. dash, the 440 yd. dash and as a member of the 440 yd. relay team. Comembers are: brother Toby Simpson, a freshman, Brad Burson , a sophomore and Junior Jeff Sherwood. Casey High is proud of Mike Simpson's achievements, but more importantly, we are proud to have had him for a classmate and friend because he is a fine individual. 33 Row 1: Roger Biggs, Mike Whaley, Jay Richardson, Chris Snedeker, Brian Blome, Denny Mitchell, Randy e,y. They captured the Little lllini Conference and advanced to the regional tournament at Lincoln Trail Junior College in Robinson. Much praise should go to Coach Gene Vidoni for producing strong teams. In the past five years Casey's league record has been 41-5. TENNIS Kneeling: Mike McNeal, Jeff McNeal, David McVey, Frank Masuga. Standing: Coach Mike Noble, Doug Loehr, Mike Glascott, Mike Morris, Brad Biggs, David Collins. This was not a great year for wins but was a good year for growth for the younger team members. Frank Masuga is a good example of this. In his first year he managed a 3-8 record in singles. Coach Noble felt the team could have done better, but as they say ... wait til next year. 36 SENIOR PLAYERS DAVID COLLINS It would seem that David Collins had difficulty in doing anything wrong this year. His singles recoixl was 10-1 and he was this years winner of the Rex Geffs Tennis Memorial Award. On Honors Day, it was announced that Collins was elected by the Casey High School's coaching staff as the outstanding male athlete of the year, an honor he is sharing with classmate Mike Simpson (see page 33). It is not often that a school as small as Casey High School has two athletes in the same year that receive the recognition that these two young men have. On page 29 a list of David's school and state records document his claim to this honor. It just so happens that Sara Seed is a powerhouse ! Facing seven opponents in regular season play, she defeated all seven. This earned her the right to play in the regional at Olney, where she finished 3rd. At the state finals in Chicago Sara finished in the top 30. Considering there was over 800 girls involved n the tennis program, this was an outstanding ecord for any girl; considering Sara is a •eshman, it is FANTASTIC! The 1977-78 Student Council, sponsored by Mr. Mike Webster and Mr. Doug Micheal, was engaged in many activities during the year. These activities are based on the Student Council's goal to provide the Casey High School students with things to do and places to go. In October the Council sponsored a ' 'Superstar Day'' on the football field. The entire school turned out to witness the various competitions between the classes. School spirit was never higher! The homecoming parade and Queen Coronation were as usual, a great success. The dance was held in the old gym due to floor repirs in the new gym. At Christmas time the council members decorated the main hall with a tree and ornaments. Also a Christmas program was presented to the Jr-Senior High School. When spring finally arrived, after another winter of sub-zero weather and a real bonafide three day blizzard, the Council held a dance with live music. A raffle was held at the dance with cases of Coke and Sprite going to the lucky winners. Also in the spring the annual student exchange wras held for a day - this year with students from Newton. Five Council members journeyed to the Chicago Convention in April. The delegates attended many meetings to discuss various ways of improving local councils. These ideas were aimed at the development of activities and programs to benefit the students of Casey High School. The Rec Room was repainted and one wall was left for the Class of 78 to continue the class mural tradition. Senior Barbara Smith is the class artist. For their contribution to the Flame the Council donated $500.00 during 1978. The Council is justly proud that they can help support the yearbook in this generous manner and hope that all students appreciate the fact that they have helped in keeping the price of the Flame down for the last few years. EDITORS NOTE: The Editors and Business Manager sincerely thank the Council for their financial aide over the past years! 6 2 STEVE LACEY - State Farmer TIM LAYMON - State Farmer PAUL LEE - Newlin Award Winner HAL HUDSON - Star Greenhand Row 1: Jeff Downey, Randy Owen, Joe Hunt, Kevin Fisher, David Keeney, Chris Shawver, Lyle Beabout, Jay Logue, John Crouch. In election to the National Honor Society, the Casey High Faculty honors the attainments already made and recognizes the promise of achievements yet to come in outstanding members of the Junior and Senior Classes. No honor or responsibility conferred by the school excels that represented by the National Honor Society. It represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends. Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in the sense that they rec -ognize specialized ability, skill or talent; but this society looks upon education as a total product measured by the four dimensions of life: leadership, service, character and citizenship. Shown above are those we honor for the 77-78 school year. Row 1: Shelly Decker, Kathy Markwell, Julie Hardway, Jeanne Rue, lisa Burris, Jill Morris. The Holiday Inn in Mattoon provided a delightful atmosphere for the occasion. Basic decorations of blue adorned the tables where those in attendance dined on Roast Beef and Baked Ham with mashed potatoes, green beans and assorted pastries for dessert. Goblets and memory books were placed at every setting for souvenir fa -vors. A picture taking session was held after the meal in the Inn's solarium, a massive, high domed room beautifully layed out with growing plants, flowers, trees and giant hanging baskets. The evening was highlighted by dancing to the music of POW-DER MILL HILL.
