fWI€ 1977 CASEY HIGH VOL. 54 SCHOOL fflVS HGR COURT w Homecoming was celebrated this year on Oct. 1. The day started off with a fun parade based on the theme of fairy book titles. A Casey football victory followed later that evening and was climaxed by the Homecoming Dance and Coronation of the 1976 Homecoming Queen. This year's queen, Paula Richardson escorted by Bruce Gross, was crowned by Mark Weaver. Her Court and their escorts (Above L To R.) were Susan Smith and Ken Ridgley, Brenda Tatge and Geff Burris, Vicki Stewart and David Shawver, Kathy Harvey and Joe Zakowski. 13 FLAME STAFF Staff Photographer Jill Morris, Trainee Jeannie Savage and Chief photographer Joni Snedeker. Each September, twelve exuberant staff members and one optimistic Adviser meet in the Flame room where they solemnly vow that this new book will be the best yearbook ever. Other rash statements are made also, such as: all assignments will be in on time, all potential advertizers will be contacted and nothing, absolutely nothing, will be misplaced or lost! Along about Christmas realism replaces fantasy and by Valentine's Day pure nake panic has gripped the editors. This volumn is the first in the Flame history to have color and we are very proud to be able to add it. The color also added to the already strained budget which we are not so proud of, so if this turns out to be the only issue of the Flame with color - don't be surprized. The life of a Flame Staff member is not an easy one for there is constant involvement from the day school opens until that last Senior has accepted his diploma. If there are any brave souls who would like to be a member of the school's neurotic sub-elite . .. we will be regrouping next September (after a summer of RGR) in the Flame room. Bottom Row: Carla Storer advertizing, Alma Baston typist, Cheryl Goble advertizing. Row 2: Cindy McCoy and Cynthia Banish class sections; Debbie Beccue and Marsha Lansbery special sections. Top Of The Heap: Alisa Ulrey Senior Editor and Kent Shoot Junior Editor. 17 GRRRthT! Ten years from now little may be remembered about the Senior Class of 1977, but we, the graduates of that class will remember four of the most important years of our lives. Many of us will recall the joy of being together and sharing the excitement of great athletic events and participating in fine plays and musical concerts. Cramming for tests and writing term papers will also be remembered, but with much less enthusiasm ! The painful happenings will be softened by time in our memories and the happy events and the friendships will be even stronger and more precious to us. We have been the generation of change, the victims of inflation and the reluctant pioneers of the energy crunch. We have witnessed scandal and observed restored honor in our school system. Perhaps some of us will remain cynical toward the establishment we are so soon to join, but many of us recognize that no system is better than the people it serves or less foulable than those we chose to run it. Ten years from now the members of the Class of 1977 will be scattered. The togetherness we have shared will be memory and the purple and gold momentos will be packed away in some forgotten drawer. By the end of that decade we will have realized that we owe a great debt of graditude to our parents and teachers, for they gave so much and we appreciated so little. Ten years from now we will have realized that we were not given an education, but rather we were presented with an opportunity to obtain an education for ourselves. Perhaps then we will also acknowledge an even greater debt, one that is owed to the citizens of Casey who gave us the best graduation present of all . . . four years of golden opportunities! The Broadcaster is supported by all the students as each student is assessed $1.00, at book rental time. Some advertizing is sold to finance picture costs. The staff was basically the same as the previous year. The only major change in management was for the News Editor (75-76) and the Chief Editor (75-76) to exchange posts. For the second year in a row the most memorable part of the Broadcaster was the editorial page. At least once, the response to our editorial gave us enough copy to put out an entire issue. Although the entire editorial staff will be gone for 1977-78, we're sure that the new staff will continue to devote their time effort to keep the Broadcaster one of the best student newspapers in our area. Freedom of the students to express their views through the use of the newspaper is very often the basis a good student body and better relations with the administration. SPEECH TEAM The Speech Team is an extra curricular activity in which students prepare individually in their areas of interest. There are eleven individual events, spanning the performance areas of duet acting and original comedy to extemporaneous speaking and original oration. The contestants work for individual awards and team points. Because Casey is one of the few schools in this area to offer speech competition to its students, the team must travel widely to participate in contests. This year the circuit included contests in Belleville, S. I.U. Carbon-dale, Mattoon, Decatur, and Peoria. Casey also held its own invitational tournament hosting ten schools from Central and Southern Illinois. Casey placed 4th in this tournament and placed 3rd at the District Speech Contest. The District team was chosen on the basis of success at prior tournaments. Those chosen for the District Speech Team were Scott Ross, Cynthia Hall, Debbie Beccue, Faye Icenogle, LuEllyn Johnson, Shelley Simpson, Nancee Miller, Ken Ramsey, Heather Morris, Elizabeth Savage, Cheryl Sandy and Kelly Shawver. Advancing to the Sectional contest were Faye Icenogle, Nancee Miller, Shelly Simpson, Debbie Beccue and Kelly Shawver. Winning first place at Sectionals and advancing to the state finals was Faye Icenogle in Humorous Interpretation. Around halloween there was a hayride G weiner roast and a tour through a haunted house. To firm up flabby arm muscles we had a taffy pull. The main event of the year was when Santa Claus visited our members and their young guests at our annual Christmas party. One of our happiest moments was when Casey ran away with the awards at the section Spring Rally, at Lakeland College. We ended the year's activities with the Mother-Daughter Banquet and installation of new officers. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Throughout history, man has recognized and marked for special honor those who excel. In election to the National Honor Society, the Casey High Faculty honors the attainments already made and recognizes the promise of achievements yet to come in outstanding members of the Junior and Senior Classes. The Casey faculty nominates candidates and a final selection of qualified students is made by a faculty committee. It is important to note that the election of members must be on the basis of four attributes, not on scholarship alone, although the National Council will not accept a student as a candidate whose scholastic average is less than B , 8596, or its equivalent. The computer informs the teachers of individual scholastic ranking for both classes. From this list teachers vote for as many students as they feel examplify the attributes of leadership, service, character, citizenship. These four personal qualities are what often keep a 'straight A' student from membership. Students who do not participate, motivate others or help in community action are seldom voted for by the faculty. The committee's final selections usually are the high 'Vote getters. No honor or responsibility conferred by the school excels that represented by the National Honor Society. It represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends. Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in the sense that they recognize specialized ability, skill or talentj but this society looks upon education as • total product measured by the four dimensions of life. The Student Council for 1976-1977 started off the year with one of the best homecomings ever. The theme was Storybook Characters for this years festivities. The whole school participated in class games which ranged from egg and spoon races and water balloon tosses to an obstacle course on the football field. Our band for the coronation was BACK OF THE BUS. Each year the council tries to improve our school. This year new blinds were put up in the rec room and also part of the room was painted. New tables and chairs were added and a new pepsi machine. Movies were shown for one day in the rec room too. Later in the year to brighten up our Christmas spirit, the rec room and halls of the school were decorated. Student Council also gave a Christmas program which included the bands and choirs. After missing two weeks of school, due to snow, things began to get back to normal. On March 25th a band called BOSS TWEED provided music for a springtime informal dance. Casey and Martinsville had an exchange day with 6 of our members and 6 of theirs. On April 28-30 the new officers for the Council of 1977-78 attended the Student Council Convention in Chicago. To top off the year the council had an end of the year trip to Turkey Run. Then it was time for another school year to end and summer to begin. EDITORS NOTE: If your still wondering what the Student Council does for you, add to the above the fact that they paid one dollar toward the purchase of this Flame for you! Those people responsible for its well being, the cheerleaders, have done an excellent job this year. Each time these girls have appeared on the football field or the basketball court they have brought credit to our school. Many hours of practice has put polish on the routines, but it is their own personalities that have made them a superb team. The Warrior, symbol of the ideals of the Casey Athletic teams, was masterly handled this year by Linda Cook. Her athletic ability as a gymnast brought exciting action to the Warrior Dance she perfected. For all the hard work and the honor you have brought to our school image, we say, Thanks and good luck to graduating Seniors, Julie Ashley and Sheryl Hawker. A water fountain, columns and white wrought iron furniture set the scene for the dance floor. Goblets and memory books were given as memory favors. Junior President, Doug Staley gave a short address to the seniors with Senior President, Scott Ross giving the acknowledgement to the juniors. After a meal of honey glazed ham, baked potato, green beans, rolls and a springy dessert the 250 people attending, adjourned from the ball room to have their pictures taken. The Warriors wound up the season with a 15-12 record; racking up eleven of those wins during the last fifteen games. For the first time in the history of the little Illini Conference one school, Casey, won both the conference tournament trophy and the Regional Tournament trophy in back-to back seasons. Casey was never a tournament favorite, possibly due to their slow start, but the Warriors demonstrated their winning ways to the competition and the happy Casey fans. The Frosh-soph team won the Conference tournament title and the freshman swept both the Neoga Freshman Invitational and the Palestine Invitational Freshman Tournament, winding up the year with the Conferenence's best record of 11-1. David Collins proved to be Casey's superstar coping honors as the team's player who had: the most points scored for the season, most points scored for one game, most assists for the season, most field goals for one game, and most free throws for one game. David netted 13 field goals against both Altamont and Westfield and 13 free throws-out of just 15 shots-against Cumberland. His 644 points for the year averaged out a 24 points per game and his 102 assists averaged 3.8 per game. Collins hit a game high of 32 points twice—once against Westfield and again with Neoga. Steve Black, Casey's 6'6 center was not blinded by Collin's rising star, setting several Most records of his own. He wound up the year with a 12 rebounds per game average and game highs of 20, 18, and 17. The 20 rebounds came in a game thriller with Hutsonville and their all-conference center. In addition to his 319 rebounds for the year, Black also led the team in field goal shooting percentages, setting a record of 148 for a 50 percent average. He also achieved a 13 field goal performance in a game with our old foe, Martinsville. Star players are not entirely self made, but rather are launched by strong team work. Warrior team strength was demonstrated by such records as Joe Zakowski's in rebounding 253 times for a 9.4 per game average. Zakowski and David Shawver were also double figure scorers. Zakowski had a total of 347 points for a 12.9 average and Shawver 341 for a 12.6 average, Steve Wright's 129 points and Eric Kusterman's 104 points raised to six the number of players topping the 100 mark. In Field goal shooting, following Black's .500, Zakowski hit .498, Collins .423, and Shawver .419. Collins zipped 86 percent at the free throw line, followed by Kusterman with 75 percent. Zakowski, Wright, Shawver, and Black all topped .500 at the free throw line. With two regulars back next year—Conference Most Valuable Player David Collins and sophomore Eric Kusterman—plus some of Coach Throneburg's JV talent—possibly Coach Durham can claim the conference and regional titles for a third year in a row. 1st Row L To R— David Collins, Biyan Cramer, Brad Beeson, Bob Ragon, Jeff Bailey, Eric Kusterman. 2nd Row—Coach Throneburg, Steve Wright, Bruce Gross, Steve Black, Joe Zakowski, Geff Burris, David Shawver, Coach Durham.
