HISTORY OF THE FLAME The first yearbook at Casey High School was published in the year of 1922 . Mary E. Emerich Van Buren was the first faculty sponsor of the book. This book was a paperback book with eighty pages and was called the Souvenir. Two books of this edition are in our collection in our files. For some reason the book was dropped for a few years and then in 1924 interest was again revived. So the first FLAME, as such, was published in 1925. The idea had stemmed from the students themselves who wanted a yearbook. The senior class voted upon it and the 1925 yearbook began to unfold. The faculty selected the staff, and organized the members into different departments. The name of the yearbook was selected as the result of a contest. Any student could enter a name, but he must give a plausible reason for its selection. Byron Davidson, a member of the staff, submitted the winning name - FLAME. Helen Squires Foster was Editor-in-chief, and her father volunteered his artistic talent. W. H. Squires drew all the artwork for the 1925 FLAME. The main drawing was a flaming torch laying on its side and occurred at the top of each page throughout the book. With a possible exception of one year during World War II, the flaming torch has been kept burning by the publication of the FLAME every year. A complete set of these books are on file at the Casey High School. After sending in the first copy, the first staff could hardly wait to read the comment of the publishers. The comment was, that it was the best work that had come to them in a long time. Of course a lot has changed since then. Methods of printing are different, preparing the copy, photographic work, planning the book to have it different every year, but as always, there is much work for the staff and quite a heavy load for the sponsor. As far as we can determine, Mrs. Had-don has been sponsor longer than anyone else. She has been sponsor of the yearbook for 17 years. The Flame Staff of 1973-74 and their sponsor take pride in presenting the 49th annual FLAME.
