HISTORY OF THE FLAME The first yearbook at Casey High School was published in the year of 1922 . Mary E. Emerich Van Buren was the first faculty sponsor of the book. This book was a paperback book with eighty pages and was called the Souvenir. Two books of this edition are in our collection in our files. For some reason the book was dropped for a few years and then in 1924 interest was again revived. So the first FLAME, as such, was published in 1925. The idea had stemmed from the students themselves who wanted a yearbook. The senior class voted upon it and the 1925 yearbook began to unfold. The faculty selected the staff, and organized the members into different departments. The name of the yearbook was selected as the result of a contest. Any student could enter a name, but he must give a plausible reason for its selection. Byron Davidson, a member of the staff, submitted the winning name - FLAME. Helen Squires Foster was Editor-in-chief, and her father volunteered his artistic talent. W. H. Squires drew all the artwork for the 1925 FLAME. The main drawing was a flaming torch laying on its side and occurred at the top of each page throughout the book. With a possible exception of one year during World War II, the flaming torch has been kept burning by the publication of the FLAME every year. A complete set of these books are on file at the Casey High School. After sending in the first copy, the first staff could hardly wait to read the comment of the publishers. The comment was, that it was the best work that had come to them in a long time. Of course a lot has changed since then. Methods of printing are different, preparing the copy, photographic work, planning the book to have it different every year, but as always, there is much work for the staff and quite a heavy load for the sponsor. As far as we can determine, Mrs. Had-don has been sponsor longer than anyone else. She has been sponsor of the yearbook for 17 years. The Flame Staff of 1973-74 and their sponsor take pride in presenting the 49th annual FLAME. CASEY VOCALISTS BECOME MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES IN ALL-STATE CHORUS Kathy Bell, a junior at Casey High School, recently auditioned at Eastern Illinois University and was selected to become a member of the 1974 All-State Chorus. Included in the district auditions were students in those high schools north of Robinson and south of Decatur. Other schools from this district having students representing them in the chorus were: Robinson, Olney, Mattoon, Charleston, Decatur, and Taylorville. The selected chorus represents the top 10% singing talent in the state of Illinois and one of the top three singers for his or her voice part in the district. Two other Casey students, Jim Yates and Debbie Comer, were also recognized as outstanding high school singers. They were selected as first alternates the chorus ranking them as the 4 singers respectively for their voice part in the district. On January 24, Kathy was accompanied by her director, David Hickox, to the Illinois Music Educators Convention held in the Arlington Park Towers Hotel, Arlington Heights. The choir, consisting of approximately 150 voices, rehearsed already prepared numbers Thursday, Friday and Saturday, along with the All-State Orchestra and All-State Band. WITH A LITTLE BIT OF BLOOMIN’LUCK! TEACHER OF THE YEAR Our winner this year, an English and Speech teacher of Casey High, graduated from high school in Granite City, Illinois in June, 1963. She attended Eastern majoring in Speech and min-oring in English. She was President of Pi Kappa Delta, head of Student Speakers Bureau, and was Listed in Who's Who in America. She became Miss Illinois in 1965 and graduated with her masters degree in Speech. She is married and has a one year old girl, Stacey. POEM TO MRS. REED 48 Yes, Mrs. Reed has been selected As teacher of the year, she's been elected. Using her ability to teach us well, Turning out productions. . .that sure are swell. She teaches English and Speech, for we all know. By how we talk. . .it definitely does show. All the enthusiasm and all the expression To get us out of that classroom depression She'll make a movie star out of someone someday By the talent she's given us in her own special way She's put up with troublemakers, indeed, But by doing it correctly, she's taken the lead. Even though we always don't say, 'We're glad to have you as a teacher,' In our own special way. For being a teacher it's hard to succeed. But you've done it. Especially you. . .Mrs. Reed. By Betsy Collins RETIREES Mrs. Neva Eggleston came to Casey fourteen years ago to teach, commuting back and forth from her home in Martinsville. Previous to joining the Casey teaching staff she spent four years teaching in the Country schools, and then twelve years in the Lomax, Illinois system. She holds a B. S. degree in Elementary Education from Western University, a Special Education degree from University of Illinois, and a Master's degree at Indiana State University in Special Education. A quiet pleasant person, Mrs. Eggleston goes about her work in an unassuming manner. Her creativity and accomplishments are amazing to those who view her work. Casey High School has been fortunate to have Mrs. Eggleston on their staff. The students and faculty all wish her well. Our faithful photographers, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Northway, (Mary and Glen to us) have decided to forgo yearbook work with the finish of this the 1974 yearbook. From his father, a veteran photographer of fifty years, Mr. Northway learned the art of biack and white photography. Later, to learn color, he attended the Agfa Color School of Photography in Rochester, New York. The Northways took their first pictures for the Flame in 1946 working out of the Greenup Studio. In 1947 they moved to Casey from Nashville, Tennessee where Mr. Northway was associated with the Agfa Photographic Company. For twenty-eight years the Casey Flame Staffs have been blessed by having photographers who understood how to develop pictures which would reproduce for publication. We are all well aware of the fact that Mary and Glen have changed their own schedule many times to accommodate us and to be on hand when school events took place. Never did we hear a word of complaint on their part when the going got rough. The Casey Schools wish to thank Mary and Glen for all their years of faithful service, and to let them know we appreciate their fine work, generosity, association, and to wish them well in their new endeavors. 49 PROM 74 HAWAII 50 Under cool palms a starlit ceiling and a theme of Hawaii, couples danced to the music provided by Dynaflow. ARIES (THE RAM) March 21-April 19 Those bom to the sign of the Ram are apt to be energetic, ambitious, aggressive, and highly intelligent. They may also be impatient, quick-tempered, and often spend their money too freely. They are ordinarily mechanically inclined and are jack-of-all trades. SENIORS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Brief history of the senior class: Our freshman year in high school was very difficult— we thought we had to make all A's to pass. As we ventured into our sophomore year things got worse. We don't know what our problem was, but we were always in trouble. Then came our junior year, and it was exciting-working on the gym to get it ready for the prom and thinking about the next year when we would be the big seniors. Well, here we are seniors! Now what?
