HISTORY The School of Medicine of Wlestern Reserve llniversity was organized in 18-13 as the Cleveland Medical College in coopration with Yvestern Reserve College. which had been founded in 1826 and was then located at Hudson. Ohio. ln 1841 the charter of the college was extended and the Medical College became a department of Western Reserve College. The School of Medicine is now the legal successor to all the regular medical schools that have existed from time to time in Cleveland. including Charity Hospital Medical College. the Medical Department of Wooster University. and the Medical Department of Ohio Yvesleyan L'nix'ersity. The School has given 118 annual courses of instruction. It has graduated 5.3 L8 students in courseii and has given llwefore 1885! 127 honorary and ad eundem degrees. and the schools which were consolidated with it graduated 1218 students. Bn- U V .':,sL..., Y .5 .. V Le.-ft, first building for medical instruction, occupied from 1845 to 18853 right, second building, occupied from 1887 to 1924. Attached to second building is the chemical-physiological laboratory, added in 1898. The first building. erected in 1816. at the corner of St. Clair Avenue and Erie Street. now E. 9th Street. was occupied until 1886, when the Perry Payne family gave additional ground adjacent to the site of the older building. On this combined area Mr. john L. Woods erected a substantial stone building for the School. 111 1898 an additional building for a chemical laboratory and in 1908 a building for research were erected adjacent to the main building. ln 1915 a site of approximately twenty acres was secured for a University Medical Center. Through the generosity of Mr. Samuel Mather a large building for the pre-clinical sciences. designed and equipped for research as well as teaching. was erected on this location and occupied in 1924.
