Of course, these declines are not ® unique to this area. Most parts of Ohio and the Great Lakes area (called ‘the rust belt’’ by some media) are experiencing similar problems. Manufacturers and other businesses have left Cleveland for at least the suburbs of Solon and Brunswick, if not Florida and Arizona (or Korea and Mexico). But 1985-86 may be the year that things began to turn around for Cleveland. In the fall, the first tenants moved into the new $@hio building on Public Square. Between These Commonly referred to as the ‘Quad’, the buildings stretching between Bingham and Crawford are the center of academic activities for students in the Case Institute of Technology. Stolid brick buildings form a cold square in the skyline, hushing the academic hustle and bustle between their walls. Lying at the center of these structures is the black ‘‘spitball’’ (a strange chunk of modern art), the majestic Michelson- Morley Memorial Fountain and, playing host to moments of relaxation and leisure, a token piece of land complete with rail ties which serve as chairs, desks, beds or whatever the beleagured student mind might dream up. 6 Introduction
