Dean Louis Toepfer of the Case Western Reserve Law School was called upon to fill this vital position. Although he is filling the position only until the trustees are able to choose a new president, he has served capably and has shown a true commitment to the welfare ofthe university during his short tenure. It is hoped that President Toepfer will continue to lead this school with the strength required for a new and unique university ,MY like Case Western Reserve University. The loss, at the hands of Western Reserve, was costly as it enabled them to win the league crown. Ihe Roughriders had Arthur Lau and Mark Winders named to the all-PAC team, while Chuba Egyhazy received honor- able mention honors. With most of the team returning coach Sharma can expect to return the PAC title to Case where it has been for th ree of the last five years. They now stand 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. PAC victories were obtained at the expense of W8lJ and Bethany, with the only loss coming to John Carroll. Standout performers tl year have been 190 Ib. Dan Jones with an 11-O record, heavyweight Mark Strehle with an 8-3 record 118 lb. Jon Snyder with an 8-3 record, 142 lb. Ge Goldman with a 9-2 record, and 167 Ib. Joe Valo with a 6-2-1 mark. The team looks forward to the PAC meet and a chance to take the title away from John Carroll. Coach Del Rosa feels that the squad has chance for five champions. Also, with all-PAC 126 lb Ken First being the only senior on the team, the pc sibilities of a league crown look even better for ne year. Clough Brian Kupchik The 1970-71 season was nothing but a jinx for the Case Tech basketball team. No less than six varsity men were knocked out of the lineup. John Hollingsworth, who was the sec- ond leading scorer on the team and second team all-PAC, broke his hand and is out for the year. Seniors Rick Piendl and Jim Givens and sophomore Brian Kupchik, all starters, are out of the lineup due to injuries. This situ- ation has forced coach Sudeck to rely on freshmen Jim LaBarr, Tom Kanuck, and Harvey Clough. All-PAC guard Mark Estes, who is also team captain, remains the Rough- riders leading scorer. The leading rebounder on the team is junior forward Dave Black. Coach Sudeck hopes that all the injuries will be healed by next year and that the PAC championship will return to Case. basketball Front Row L to R Petar Popovich, Jim Givens Mark Estes Bob Pekkanen, Harvey Back Row L to R Coach Sudeck, Sam Mason Lee DeGeronimo Jim LaBarr, Tom Kanuck Lloyd Lyon, Dave Black Tim Canty, Trainer Miss ing: Rick Piendl John Hollingsworth Sam Gaines, Rich Alston swlmmmg Front Row L to R D C Smlth T Kohan F M Wllson M W Nabors A Cockburn B D Friedman Back Row L to Fl Coach Harry Kyr ettl R Buerke Abrahamson J J Haldet Fl DeLanls T S Harrington Absent B S Morgan Bull Myers 44 So far the 1971 season has only been so so for the CWRU swlmmers The overall meet record IS 2 5 whale the PAC mark stands at 1 2 The team wlll lose only one senior Ted Abrahamson and the prospects look good for the next couple of years A freshman backstroker Cockburn has done an outstanding job this year He IS very close to the Case record In that event and should break It before the season IS over Outstandmg performances have also come from Ted Abrahamson and Steve Buerkel In the 50 and 100 yard freestyle and In the freestyle relay I I V X ,ll lvl ' A y, T 1 , 'l 9, . 3 f' ,r ' ' T - .l l . l ii sri: T U : . . Not being members of the PAC, they schedule matches with independents including some pretty stiff competition. The most important matches of the year are always the Great Lakes Championships which are held in Indiana and the NCAA National Championships with are held this year in Denver, Colorado. The CWRU team possesses some great talent. Junior Frank Nagorney was named all-American last year. Along with Nagorney, Bill Landis has a chance to make all- American this year, as a freshman. Representatives of CWRU for the big meets will be determined by duel-offs. Fighting for the Epee position will be soph- omore Harry Rosen, junior Fred Coffield and junior Bill Maher. Fighting for the foil position will be junior Russ Redding and senior Jerry Lopez. With only one senior graduating and some top prospects in the freshman and sophomore classes, the CWRU team can expect better seasons in the future. The season's record stood at 6-1 with the only loss coming in a nonconference meet with Mount Union. The Case team produced eight PAC champions in 1970. They are the 440 relay team consisting of Gary Horndeski, Jim Lock, Ken Wrona, and Ray Floyd, mile champion Pat Lenahan, high hurdles and in- termediate hurdles champion Walt Bubley, discus and javelin champion Steve Hufman, and long jump champion A.Y.
