eteaae TO CASE MEN the resident We shall remember 1942-43 as a year of outward confusion and inner unity. Confusion has come with a speeded schedule, extra work and constant uncertainty, yet each of us has been guided by the same compelling urge to contribute his utmost to winning the war and preparing the future peace. Case has become an arsenal, forging materials, ideas and men into instruments of war. The college plant has been working from eight in the morning until ten at night. We have outrun our space and have had to take over an additional building as a War Training Annex. The load of teaching and research borne by the Faculty has increased by nearly one-third. To aid our regular staff, nearly two hundred other persons have been pressed into part-time service. We have had to enlist the cooperation of six other colleges and of school authorities and chambers of commerce in ten outlying cities of north-eastern Ohio. Among our direct contributions to the w ar effort we may count the four men from our Faculty sent into the armed forces and the four others into critical fields of war re- search, the two classes graduated within an eight months ' period which added more than a hundred officers to the fighting forces and nearly three hundred engineers to the production front. We may also count with pride the twenty or more war research projects handled, all with valuable and some with spectacular results. Outstanding as a war contribution has been the great program of special war training sponsored by Case all over northeastern Ohio. Four thousand war workers, including a group of officers of the Army and the Navy as well as many civilian employ- ees of the Ordnance Department, the Signal Corps, and the Air Corps, have received this training. During the year equipment valued at more than $80,000 has been added to our laboratories and we have expended more than $1,000,000 in operating expense, as compared with half that amount ten years ago. Beside this monumental volume of work we may place the equally fine record of voluntary war activity, of blood given and bonds bought, of scrap collected and pro- tection organized, of ride sharing and of War Chest contributions. A tough year? Yes, but a great one! j0 ' Jjfl - » ' W4«M November 16, 1942 14
