HENRY LAWRENCE HITCHCOCK C1855-18715 In 1855, Henry Lawrence Hitchcock, a Presbyterian minister, was elected to the office of President. the college through one of its most trying eriods. He was in the chair during the nancial crisis of 1858 and the period of the Civil War. The entire college, pro- fessors and students alike, entered the active service. He freed the college of a huge debt and single handed raised a surplus fund of one hundred and flfty thousand dollars in order that the college might be able to cope with future financial situations. It is almost unbelievable that the gentle President Hitchcock could accomplish such a tremendous task, besides serving as the active head of the college and its professor of Christian Theology as well.
