THE CHIEF 1989 Joseph Case High School Swansea, Massachusetts Dedication Sheldon E. Ashton July 4, 1946 - December 4, 1988 We, the Class of 1989 dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Sheldon Ashton. He was a dedicated teacher who always put his students first. He had a special knack for making English a very interesting subject. He kept his students captivated with hilarious stories and examples. He had an ear for music and an ear for students. He was always willing to listen to anyone who had a problem. He never let on that he had any illness which made his death a terrible shock to the students of Case High School. Mr. Ashton, who travelled to the beat of a different drum, was a special person to the Class of 1989 as well as to the thousands of othe r students who knew him. He will be deeply missed but we regard his passing from this world not as an extinguishing of a light but as a putting out of a lamp because the dawn has come. Thank you for giving your entire teaching career to the students of Swansea. The reception of a diploma on commencement day signifies the successful completion of your elementary and secondary education. You should feel proud of this ac¬ complishment and anxious to begin the next phase of development in the pursuit of a career and a place in society. Your parents and community have made a significant investment in your future by providing you with a sound basic education. Not to be forgotten is the fact that you also have invested a great deal of time, effort, and study in attain ing your diploma. However, graduation from high school should be viewed as a beginning not an end. You should continue investing in education as you select a career field and establish your future goals. The expectations of today ' s society dictate that education be a continuing process. Your future success will be influenced by many factors, not the least of which is the quality and level of education. I urge you to retain your commitment to education as you strive to establish your place in society. I wish you success, health and happiness in future years. Yours truly, . c ' ' f ' yohn E. McCarthy ' SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Harold G. Devine, Jr. Assistant Superintendent SOME THOUGHTS ON GRADUATION by Harold G. Devine, Jr. Assistant Superintendent of Schools What is it you remember As the years go sailing by? Will your school time be recalled And will you smile or. perhaps cry? What will you all be doing In a time so far from here? The question keeps repeating As your high school end grows near. You ' ve spent four years at Case High School You ' ve met all types and kinds. You ' ve built some lasting friendships With the kind of love that binds. Your teachers have prepared you With their wit and grace and style. To face the world with confidence In just a little while. What is it you remember? These words ring loud and true. The things that you remember Are now a part of you. My message to the senior class John E. McCarthy Superintendent Of Schools Dear Graduates) The legendary old baseball pitcher, Satchel Paige, once said: Don’t look back; someone may be gaining on you . I would like to amend that advice somewhat. Don’t be afraid to look back) but try to look ahead with the advantage of past experience. That, rather than to see whether anybody is gaining on you, is why man was designed to be able to turn around and look in any direction. Above all, as you move on, remember that human attribute: the ability to turn around and look in any direction. Blind¬ ers are for horses, not for people. If education has any single goal, it is to encourage people to know how to ask questions and to know how to go about getting answers. It is not enough in life to be a listener, a passive member of the audience. It is not enough to look straight ahead and never look around. It is not enough to breathe a sigh and assume that your learning days are over. The lucky individ¬ ual is the individual who never stops learning until he or she stops breathing. Mr. David Jardin Principal Be such a person and your future will be a happy and prosperous one. David Jardin, Principal Mrs. Ann Keshura Secretary Mr. Gerald A.
