INTRODUCTION Our school began in 1927, when the town accepted Mrs. Frank S. Stevens gift of the High School. During this year our school colors became official. Maroon Gold. In 1930, when Mrs. Helen A. Reagan was principal, the first yearbook was published, with just one small problem-It had no name. There was some debate over what to call the Joseph Case High Yearbook but no decision was made. During this year we had another dilema to be solved, what will become our school mascot? Well, as everyone knows we became the Cardinals, because that was the closest thing to resemble our school colors. In 1945 a decision was made to call our yearbook The Chief ' ' The name mainly has to do with Swansea ' s heritage. Swansea played a major roll in history back in the Colonial days. The Chief was the 2nd son of The Great Massosoit, Metoconet, better known as King Philip, the chief of the Womponog Indians. There were warnings which struck fear into the Swansea settlers ' on Sunday June 20, 1675 young men whose families had been firm friends of Sachem Massasoit, visited now his son in desperate hope of warding off the horrors of a frontier war. Philip seemed to promise peace, but his younger worriors called for blood. Plymoth authorities hadn ' t helped much by hanging two of Philips men for murdering Sassomon, an English-speaking Indian who prabobly had revealed the Wompononog ' s plans. Before the week ended nine had been killed in Swansea tribes were preparing for the warpath all over New England as the news reach them. The English, too, sent forces immediately from Boston Plymouth to assist the town which through out later American History was to be identified far wide as the place where King Philips ' War began. — Laurie L. If I might offer you one piece of advice, it would be to become involved. Refrain from looking the other way ' ' and meet life ' s challenges directly. Do not abdicate your responsibility as a citizen to do what is right and just. Do not become a follower but form your own opinions based on what you have learned and experienced during your years in and out of school. Become involved and be your own person. Perhaps Thoreau stated it best when he wrote: If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. The best of luck and congratulations to the Class of 1987. David Jardin, Principal To The Class of 87 It is my sincere hope that your past years at Case High have been both enjoyable and rewarding. It is now time to take on the responsibility of pursuing your career goals. I hope that you will pursue these goals responsibly and work dilligently to achieve them. A new instrumentation, utilizing brass, piccolos and percus¬ sion, was introduced for the first time at Case High School, with woodwind players in the band transferring over to brass instruments for the fall season. Achievements during the season included best percus¬ sion, music, drum major, and band front awards at various Hew England Scholastic Band Association con¬ tests. The band finished the marching season with an appearance at the HESBA Championships at Boston University where, in competition with ten bands, they placed 4th. This year there are 36 senior members. In or¬ der to be accepted as a member, one must have a cumulative aver¬ age of B + or better. Members are chosen in their Junior year and are members for two years if their academic average is within the guidelines. However, it is possible to be chosen one year member in your senior year. Any¬ one accepted must then pledge to uphold the values that the n.H.S., stands for. These values are leader¬ ship, character, scholarship, and service. The H.H.S., under the guidance of Mr. Michael Flanagan, sponsors many events throughout the year. One of the more successful events held is the Scholarship Road Race, which is an annual event every spring. This year ' s n.H.S. is also in¬ volved in the Foster Parents Pro¬ gram, sponsering a little girl named Arias Granados from Ecuador. The Society is a worthwhile goal for all students to try and achieve through hard work and determination.
