So Much of Life Ahead . . . 9 It does not happen very often that a teacher with such a short ca¬ reer at Case is chosen as the person to whom the yearbook is dedi¬ cated. Having been here only three years, Mr. Santos has displayed qualities which the students believe personify a good teacher. His strength and ability, friendliness and sincere interest attract the stu¬ dents. Whether on the playing field or in class, he always wants to see his players and students do their best; he tells his team that suc¬ cess is achieved only through willingness and a strong desire, and his faith in the team was rewarded at the close of the football sea¬ son. Because Mr. Santos graduated from Case only seven years ago, the students feel a special closeness to him and are able to talk to him freely. We dedicate this yearbook to a man who clearly ex¬ emplifies what we believe a teacher and coach should be. tAr. Santos Administration Miss Reagan Few students at Case realize how much work the faculty really does. Miss Reagan, as principal, leads the faculty and student body with dignity and wis¬ dom. She is the person at Case upon whose shoul¬ ders the problems and questions concerning stu¬ dents and school life ultimately fall. Although the title “principal” is one that usually puts students on their guard. Miss Reagan has shown us, the Class of 1971 through her words and actions, that she is also a friend. She is always ready to help any stu¬ dent with a problem and willingly gives any advice she feels may be helpful. Miss Reagan has been principal at Case High for many years, and her in¬ fluence on our lives will be remembered long after we leave. M iss Helen A. Reagan Principal yWr. Edward R. Silva — Assistant Principal Mr. Silva As assistant principal of our school, Mr. Silva is a friend and ally to us. The bond of friendship and understanding which he ex¬ tends to each and every student is a bond which can “ne ' er be broken.’’ Although he sometimes may appear to be abrupt and gruff, it is only a cover up for his soft¬ heartedness. If you ever have a problem, which seems unsolvable, talk it over with “Unc.’’ While you are in school, he tempo¬ rarily adopts you and your problems be¬ come his problems. Yet, Mr. Silva never asks for much in return. All he asks is that we give him the respect he deserves and obey the rules of the school. Mr. Silva has set an excellent example for us and has shown us the true meaning of friendship and good leadership. 12 Administration Mr. Donald McCaffrey — Superintendent Mr. Robert Couture Assistant to the Superintendent 13 14 MRS. Faced with one of its toughest schedules in history, the determined and usually over-matched Cardinals won the hearts of people who appreciated their gallant efforts. New Coach Joe Santos instilled in his players the pride and toughness which eventually and probably very shortly will produce a winning Case football team. Losses to extremely tough Franklin, Westboro, Old Rochester, Seekonk, Milford, Dighton-Rehoboth, Fairhaven, and King Phillip teams were all offset by an astounding 32-28 victory over a powerful Somerset High team on Thanksgiving Day. This victory simply made the season a success and will remain in the memories of Case rooters forever. As for the future? Blessed with many experienced returnees, coupled with an undefeated freshman team, it seems many more vic¬ tory rides are in store for next season. It is a very personal sport in which each runner has to decide whether or not he wants to put out or give up. Once again the Cardinal harriers pulled off another fine season, ending up with a solid (5-4) record. Rookie coach, Mr. Demary guided the team to their fine season, trying to get the utmost ability out of each runner in every practice session and especially every meet. The team was led by its two co-captains, Dave Rose and Len Thibault. Dave, m ore often than not finished first in the meets and Len usually about third or fourth. Seniors Paul Monahan and Tim Riendeau and super-soph Mike (Elmo) Kearns also had fine seasons, all placing in high positions. Other members of the team who deserve a lot of credit for going out for cross-country include seniors Dave Paquette, Bill Shaw, Len Connors; juniors Jimmy Gauthier, Jeff Pick¬ ens; sophomores Raoul Faria, Manny Martinez, Dave Michaud, Paul Burke, and Bob Montgomery. The cross-country runner gets little glory if any. A great deal of dedication and determination goes into cross-coun¬ try. The results are usually only personal glory; the satisfaction that he as an individual has done the best he could. For any other school, on overall record of 14-7 would be con¬ sidered a successful one, but with the tradition for outstanding basketball teams at Case, this season has to be considered a fair one. Faced with the loss of outstanding players from the succeed¬ ing year, victories came tough and some very exciting games were the result. One of the greatest games in the area was a 1 point five-overtime loss against Holy Family. Co-Captains Ricky Beaulieu and Dennis Leonardo were very consistent performers in every facet of the game. Good scoring and board strength was received from seniors Spencer Belyea and Bill Griffin, and junior Kevin Kelly. Tommy White’s outside shoot¬ ing and Paul Monahan’s key steals often broke some tight games open. A few highlights of the season were first half victories against Seekonk and Somerset and great season closing wins against Connolly and D.R. A first round defeat to Fairhaven ended Case’s chances to progress in the Tech Tourney. Incidentally, it was the fifth consecutive year Case had qualified for the Tech. With returnees such as White, Kelly, Chris O’Donoghue, Don Dubois, Doug Larivee, Don Kenesheo, Jeff Pickens, and Jim Gau¬ thier, next year can be looked at with optimism.
