Editor-In-Chief — Joseph Barboza Assistant Editors — Kathy Lawton, Cathy Stone «-r1- ff •nam I nfli ” W” «■ • I w • ' rri’ ' s-r ' r I • • The walls which contained us silently stare with vacant windows as we leave. Quiet streams where once we ebbed and flowed from classroom to classroom to the rhythms of bells and buzzers. 2 We encounter a new sound outside, an old sight with new eyes. The focus changes; the beat quickens. Swept up by the force of our lives faces fade and memories thin, but. . . the walls remain always, a foundation, a pillar. 4 5 WE HAVE DEDICATED THIS YEARBOOK TO A MAN WHO HAS DEDICATED HIMSELF Bv personal example, Mr. Gordon has set an impressive standard for students to fol¬ low. His knowledge, strength of character and willingness to help have enabled him to instill a great desire to excel in all who have come in contact with him. This can be seen in the success he has enjoyed as a coach. However, it extends further than that. It reaches anvone who has ever been in one of his classes or even just talked with him. In truth, his spirit has affected everyone at Case High and we gratefullv dedicate The Chief to this man who is himself dedicated. L- 6 IN MEMORIAM riie class ol 1970 ltHli atcs a portion of its yearbook to the memory of a truly reat friend. Mr. Anthony F avao, known to us as ’’Tonv , ave of himself, his time and even mon to those in iK ' ed. At dances, o;ames, or am functions in¬ volving the student body he served our school well, taking not only satisfaction and pride in his work as custodian but also show ing a gtmuine in¬ terest in the students th( ' mselves. Tony was de¬ scribed hv many as something special a friend to whom you could always talk and one who (m- joved the presence of young people. In his own way he fulfilled the role of a teacher. In tin man¬ ner of his daily life, in his actions as well as speech, he demonstrated the unselfish kindness that earns the love and ri ' spec ' t of youth. He is a part of our high school experience that we will not allow to fall from our memory. 123 Underclassmen .... 64 Sports. Notice how well your schedule is made out each year . . . not to men¬ tion the fact that the school is still standing. There is however a deeper, very spe¬ cial service that Miss Reagan performs for us. Without our realizing it, she has become an example for each of us to fol¬ low merely by eonducting herself as a lady at all times. Even when we dis¬ grace ourselves thoroughly a quiet word causes us more guilt than all the fury in the world because we feel we’ve let her down. Miss Reagan always respects us as adults even if sometimes we don’t de¬ serve it. Although Miss Reagan hasn’t taught in a formal classroom for a while, she’s more a teaeher than ever before. From her we’ve learned many lessons: eourte- sy, dedication and fairness and we’ve gained someone who is personally in¬ terested in each of us. Miss Reagan has always listened respectfully to an hon¬ est opinion. In short, we have been fortunate to have known Miss Reagan as a person and a principal, one to whom we’ve given our admiration and thanks for al¬ ways being on our side. MR. SILVA Every Freshman who has ever entered Case has quaked in his shoes at the thought of enraging Mr. Silva . . . until he discovers at graduation that be¬ hind that gruffness is a heart of gold. Mr. Silva serves as school sportsfan meteorolog¬ ist. During football season there is always a Friday 5th period announcement ( Don Kent says that it’s going to be a beautiful day for the game tomorrow; so I expect you all go get out there and support the team.’’) And the Cardinal’s No. 1 fan is at every game rain or shine. Got a problem? Go talk it over with Mr. Silva, the guidance counsellor. No one has ever found the door closed to a desire to talk things over . . . even if you’re no longer a student at Case. Finally, when you graduate from Case, you leave with more than a diploma; for you know that as a re¬ sult of a certain person’s (ahem) prodding’’ that you’re leaving Case a better person than you were when you entered AND you’ve gained a life-long friend. Thanks, Unc . . . for putting up with all of us! Mr. Edward R. Silva — Vice Principal 13 MRS. LEGER English, Speech, Debating ENGLISH MR. FOOTBALL 69” Every so often there comes a time when a coach must refrain from optimism and plant the seeds of redevelopment. 1969 was such a campaign for our fighting Cardinal football squad which encompassed far more success than what their actual record dis¬ closes. Before the season opener rolled around, the maroon and gold unit glowed green with inexperience. But through the care¬ ful guidance of Coach Bob Williston and his able assistants, Case improved readily with each contest. And while their 2-6-1 slate left the fans a bit disappointed, the team did provide the little oddities that helped to make it an interesting year. 96 Mo; NMkMw- 1-0 tni ' t v-‘.. r- ' -iii ’i ' •.!;•■ I . ■) ' ' 4 r!rfS ' r X ' . , i 4 . i X Coach Williston Asst. But that’s all passed now. For in 1969 Coach Ur¬ ban’s harriers modeled a season which we’ve reason to be proud of. Paced by our energetic co-captains Hank Chapman and Kenny Kitchen, the club enjoyed a totally prosperous campaign while duplicating the school record of 5-3 which was set back in 1967. Each individual demonstrated that he could give and take like a true-blue sportsman. As a matter of fact it was only the third winning year in the school’s history — but the third in suc¬ cession! JUNIOR VARSITY m iii ., ' THE TEAM THAT WAS” Basketball fortunes usually rest upon a team’s height advantage. Naturally, the larger a team is, the better its chances are of winning. But this year’s hoop squad, out- sized in a number of contests with an aver¬ age height barely touching the six foot bar¬ rier, hit the headlines with a spirit and de¬ termination that measured ten feet tall. Coach Bob Gordon’s Cardinals went a long way on a never say die” attitude that carried them into the Class C Tech Tournev j Finals. They seemed to face up to one chal¬ lenge after another. But Case encountered its greatest obstacle of all when star per¬ former Paul Connors was lost by injury in the third quarter of the most important game. And although the end of the road had come the heartbreaking way, the team had posted an eye-popping mark of 23-1 proba¬ bly the best in the school’s history. Captain Paul Connors paced his mates to a lone Narry Championship with a sparkling average of 23.7 points per outing. Craig Smith chipped in with Connors for the other half of the one-two scoring punch. Bill Grif¬ fin and Denny Leonardo gave the Red Birds fine board strength while Paul Stanko and Rick Beaulieu displayed some daring de¬ fense. A team that had been the target of much skepticism as the campaign got underway set the town of Swansea into a frenzv by be¬ coming Gardenbound for a third straight year. Yes, the club of 1969-70 was the team that was.” I OS TECH TOURNEY 106 CLASS ' C’ RUNNERS-UP 107 BASEBALL 70 JOHN MORGADO BOB GORDON CRAIG SMITH John Morgado (captain) catcher — batted close to 300, good receiver and hitter. Craig Smith — veteran 1st baseman, should add speed and finesse to the infield. Bob Janson — a part time starter last season, should add power to the line-up. Playing outfield with possi¬ ble pitching duties. Ray Desruisseaux — 2nd base, started last half of the season, did an excellent job. Bill Booker — switching from catching to the out¬ field, Bill’s experience should help the Cardinals in all phases of the game. John Kennedy — quickness, hustle, and all-around desire are all part of his contribution to a successful season. Coach Gordon — a model of determination and self- sacrifice; his spirited leadership can produce nothing but a successful team. Coming from an excellent bas¬ ketball season, Mr. Gordon should extend his win¬ ning ways over the diamond. BOB JANSON BILL BOOKER JOHN KENNEDY 108 RAY DESRUISSEAUX PETER DEAN DENNIS LEONARDO Alton Cole — a doubtful starter, due to a football in¬ jury, his sideline support, should give the team added incentive. Dennis Leonardo — strong righthanded hurler should team-up with Morgado to give the Cardinals a rugged battery. Ricky Beaulieu — played 3rd base most of the sea¬ son, good fielder should come around with the bat this year. Peter Dean — noted for playing 2nd base, Pete could play a big role in the team’s success anywhere on the diamond. Billy Griffin — pitcher, played with arm trouble, good potential if arm is sound. Tom White — young sophomore, though lacking game experience, should see a lot of action — alter¬ nating between the mound and infield.
