O’Toole stands distinctively apart. To some, his classes are strangely unorthodox and perhaps even ridiculous, for the grammar, drama, novels, and poetry of “traditional” English courses have been abandoned. They are replaced by subjects which go far beyond the high school and even the realm of literature to life itself. OT comes staggeringly close to a true meaning of the word “teacher” as he prompts others, while giving of himself, to think and to seek beyond the superficial present. The 1969 Chief is dedicated to him, not merely to fill up space, but because he is a special person whose knowledge and influence, like the skylark in this poem by Shiki, will remain when that of others has been crushed and forgotten. Treading the clouds , inhaling the mist: a soaring skylark. Mr. Austin J. O’Toole 6 IfV! F oreword Four years have passed too quickly, leaving only memories. There was a time for everything while we were at Case— a time to learn, a time to laugh, a time to live. The days were filled with work, play, tension, excitement, and sorrow, and we grew. Yet our growth cannot readily be measured, for each of us took our own meanings and answers from the experiences we shared. Time moves on and so must we move with it. The class of ’69 will break apart and each of us will go our separate ways. But in the pages of this yearbook, in the priceless moments of youth cap¬ tured by a click of the camera shutter, we will be together, and the time that was 1969 will remain forever. The stu¬ dents, richer by far for having known Mr. Bannister, describe him simply as a “great guy.” The stu¬ dents, the school, and the town have grown on the wisdom, cha¬ racter, and personality of teachers like Mr. Bannister. And even in his passing he remains a teacher. The impossibility of ever re¬ placing him teaches us the richest lesson of all: that a human being can attain a real and individual nature through kind and unselfish love. This is his legacy to us, a gift that was given in deeds for thirty-five years to the youth of Swansea. One can only speak in praise of this man. Mr. Robert Bannister 1905-1969 9 Mr. Donald F. McCaffrey —Superintendent Administration Mr. Robert Couture —Assistant to the Superintendent 10 Mrs. DeMattos Mrs. Roberts Mrs. Squire Secretaries r- Mrs. Hetherson Mrs. Stic kler Miss Helen A. Reagan —Principal Miss Reagan graces the office of Principal with a dignity and a wisdom which endear her to us as a great and gracious lady. Her office is a place of warmth, guidance, and understanding, tempered, when necessary, with criticism and frank warning. Her name and her life are inseparably linked with the school, for she has at all times shared its growth, suffering, and advancement. Miss Reagan is truly dedicated to the fine art of teaching and each day finds reward and satisfaction in the individual students who pass through the halls of Joseph Case High School. Miss Reagan 12 Mr. Edward R. Silva —Vice Principal Mr. Silva “Let me have your attention for just a few minutes, please. The game to¬ morrow ...” This familiar statement brings to mind Mr. Silva—the excited and faithful sports fan, the firm disciplina¬ rian, the friend, and the man whom underclassmen call “Mr.” and seniors openly call “Unc.” Life at Case would not be complete without him, for along with the fun and laughter are mixed guidance, strength, and wisdom. His service to the students is a great one, for through his efforts, they may learn the values and responsibilities of being young men and women. 13 MRS. LEGER Bridgewater State College (B.S. in Ed.) PAPANDREA Brown University (M.A.) French, Head Language Department, Stu¬ dent Council Advisor “Are you with me?” The fast-paced world of today demands that we be versed in more than just our native language, and so the multi-lingual teachers begin their task. To speak, to write, to think in another language. The ultimate goal is not merely the correct conju¬ gation of a verb or a fairly authen¬ tic accent, but the ability to assume a language which is different from our own, but no longer foreign. Mathematics, Head Mathematics De¬ partment “Chuck that answer right out the ivindow.” Mathematics When compared with the vast expanse called infinity, the world of the Math student at Case is minute. He studies numbers, poly¬ gons, factors, and equations, and slowly his knowledge increases, step-by-step, built on a solid foundation of arithmetic. Mathematics, to him, is algebra or geometry or trig. But perhaps one day, he will discover that Mathe¬ matics is much, much more in its role as the worldwide expression of science and the Uni¬ verse. A TRIBUTE TO THE SENIOR GRIDMEN Dave Chace—a fine gentleman off the field, and a true sportsman in the arena. Dave fought off the injury bug to eme rge as a key figure in the Cardinal secondary. Gary Chace—used as an alternate tackle. Gary showed great determination under pressure. As a highly spirited player, he kept the morale of his mates up. Russ Dawe—a good athlete indeed. Russ didn’t surpass his expectations, but he certainly did grind out sizable amounts on the ground. Ron Desruisseaux—a locker room stunt man. But he took his defensive chores seriously and was rewarded with a Narry honorable mention. Art Donais—this ’ guy added spunk to the team spirit. As the Cardinal signal caller he performed with proficiency. Brian Leonardo—always a joker, always a top- notch competitor—that’s our Otis. Brian led the Car¬ dinals in pass receiving and stashed away All-Nary honors as an end. Norm Messier—the return artist. Norm hunted down those loose pigskins and turned them into sizable pick-ups. Mike Pavao—a triple threat. Whatever or how¬ ever the Cardinal workhorse did it, he’d always come thrdhgh. Mike established himself as a fine passer, a rugged receiver, and a speedy back. Sandy Shepard—the blond-haired boy with the golden toe. It’s been a while since Case has come up ' with a fieldgoal kicker. But Sandy came through and assisted the team as a cross-bar marksman. Ray Silva—a hardworker who really dedicated himself to the game. Ray always provided the line with support during defensive service in his own modest way. Wayne Vogler—the heavy weight. Wayne was the Cardinal’s heaviest lineman and used his weight to recover fumbles. His fine blocking on offense often created holes for the backfield to utilize. To these seniors go the best of luck in later life. Although your football days are over may you tackle any obstacles that bar your way. Co-Captains Dawe and Messier with Asst. Coach Stantos. CO¬ CAPTAIN ART DONAIS RON DESRUISSEAUX RUSS DA WE FOOTBALL ’68 The Cardinal football team of 1968 was one of the most spirited clubs Case has assembled in years. Despite being plagued with injuries and double sessions. Coach Bob Williston was equal to the task. He made ends meet to mold a respectable 4-4-1 mark. Co-Captains Norm Messier and Russ Dawe guided Case from out of the pits and on to victory. Final figures revealed that Mike Pavao and Brian Leonardo were the backbone of the Cardinal offense. But this in itself was not enough for the Cardinals to retain the Narry League Crown. Case finished with a league record of 1-3 and an overall slate of 4-4-1. Despite bowing to Holy Family in the semi-finals, Coach Gordon really mended together a fruitful campaign that will dwell in the minds of Case High followers for years to come. For the second straight year, Case dead¬ locked Holy Family for the top spot while waging a 19-3 composite. Brian Leonardo and Christ Roberts teamed up for a sporty combination that will be hard to replace. The Bird- man combo transformed ball clubs into rubble by monop¬ olizing the boards. Paul Connors and Bobby Eddy turned in deluxe shooting performances and were backed with a dependable bench in Mike Vickers, Mike Raposa, and Steve Buckley. Dave Chace furnished the flock with heads- up defense. This colorful club developed into the talk of the town after trekking across Garden hardwood for the second consecutive year. ACTIVITIES Yearbook Staff The yearbook staff is one of the most decorous groups in the school—until the day of each dead¬ line. Four times during their senior year, there is pure bedlam for these brave souls who just a few months before had so coveted the prospect of being on the yearbook staff. Mad scrambling to take pictures, organizing them into themes of precious memories, and just plain hard work are all part of the activity of the members of the yearbook staff. In the spring, they see the realization of the aspirations, the toil, and all the good times of the past year in the tangible form of the yearbook. TONY ANDRADE —editor L. to R. —T. Romanovitch, P. The “seances” are conducted entirely “en francais” and give the members a chance to exercise their speaking knowledge of the language. “La Clas- sicale,” the newspaper of the club, is composed of prose and poetry written by the members of the French Club. Spanish Club There is more to the learning of a language than simply memorizing verbs and vocabulary. “la Colderon” adds color and reality to the Spanish language. It gives third year Spanish students the opportunity to discover the culture of the country whose language they are studying. A program is pre¬ sented each month by the members themselves, and the year is culminated by a trip to Boston. Here “los mien- bres” may be seen bravely wading through a dish of “paella” or sincerely appre¬ ciating the beauty of “el bal¬ let folkloriqo.” It is certain that all the members of the Spanish Club find it a valu¬ able experience.
