Swansea Free Public Library 69 Main Street Swansea, MA 02777 THE CHIEF 1966 Joseph Case High School Swansea, Massachusetts Volume XXIII EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, GLENN FURTADO ASSISTANT EDITOR, GLENN S. ORTON BUSINESS MANAGER, STEPHEN FLANAGHAN ASSISTANT EDITOR, MARJORIE GERSCH I h was the best of times . . . It was the worst of times . . . 2 It was the age of foolishness ...” 3 Dedication Our yearbook is dedicated to Mr. John Croke, a former mathematics and econom¬ ics teacher, whose young life ended un¬ timely in a tragic accident. Mr. Croke was here at Case High so brief a time that we had just begun to know him; but this much we do remem¬ ber: his life was almost as young as our lives are now. As we leave Case High School this year to face the risks and chal¬ lenges of which the world consists, so too did Mr. Croke terminate his services at Case High School last year to pursue an advanced degree in economics. We are only a year apart in our commencements. There is a type of apprehension that we do not fully understand residing behind our sometimes laughing, sometimes frown¬ ing faces in the pages of this yearbook. Yet we are willing, even impatient, to take the risks, face the same challenges of a world that just a year ago proved to be unkind. Mr. John Croke 1940-1965 4 Foreword Four fleeting, transient years, filled with memories, valued little in the act, but cherished after even only few years have passed. While we are here we are little aware of the unique world in which we are in¬ volved, and when we are gone we shall look back to these years with nostalgic longing. For ours is a world in which we have a greater challenge to develop our abilities and satisfy our needs than anywhere else. It’s these unique experiences that this yearbook attempts, in its own small way, to re¬ capture: the friends, the faculty, the clubs, and the general feeling of the reso¬ nance, and freshness of these years. ■■ Underclassmen p. 47 Advertisements p. 121 6 Table of Contents Administration . p. 7 Seniors . p. 19 Sports .p. 89 Faculty. . p. 11 Clubs . p. 65 Who ' s Who?. p. 55 7 Superintendent It is not often we come directly into contact with Mr. Donald F. Mc¬ Caffrey. We see him on the stage platform during an assembly or now and then throughout the school. This does, however, in no way minimize the work which he is responsible for. Behind the scenes most always, he heads and supervises the affairs of the whole Swansea Public School sys¬ tem. He creates and often begins the changes in the schools which make for a better educational system. As he completes his fourth full term in this demanding capacity, we express con¬ fidence in his future work and guid¬ ance of the young people throughout our town. donald f. McCaffrey Administration 8 MISS HELEN A. REAGAN Principal Marking her twentieth year as principal of the Joseph Case High School, Miss Helen A. Reagan has served in a manner befitting her capacity of responsibility to the school. With both wisdom and dignity she has guided both whole classes and individuals through the rigors of school life. Her office is the abode of warmth and pride and the place of frank warning and criticism. Her name, and indeed, her very being, is inseparably associated with the school, for she has grown with it, suffering in all it may have suffered, and striving forward with all of its advances. The greatest way to measure her greatness as both principal and as a lady is to ennumerate the fine men and women who have passed through these doors and into the world, successfully, under her guidance. A dministration 9 Vice Principal Always ' with a concern for the student, Mr. Edward Silva has loomed before us a disciplinarian, foremost in the areas of watcher-of-the-exit-door between 8:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. and chief-smoke-smeller- and-nicotine-detector. Yet, we know him equally well in the capacity of high school spirit conjuror through his invocations over the P. A. system. And as we get to know him better, he seems to be human,, friendly, and compassionate, serving not solely to discipline and exhort, but to guide and counsel. Thus, through his ef¬ forts, we may learn the values and respon¬ sibilities of being young men and women. A dministration 10 Social Studies MR. MONAHAN Social Studies, Senior Class Advisor. Class of ’68 A sophomore—what is he? Where is he going? Whatever the answers may be, he is well on his way—he has passed that first critical year and is now slowly but surely getting “in.” His world is one of decision—he is learning how to become accepted in a world which seems to be a vast expanse of adults. He strives to prove to himself and others that he is worthy of their acceptance. So it seems his task is a serious one, not to be lightly put aside, but at the same time not to weigh too heavily upon him. He will find when the- year ends that he did survive, and probably that he appreciated his new experiences in grow¬ ing up. First row: P. Flynn, W. Wheeler, J. Lemire, A. Santana, C. Lingard, S. Class of ’69 A freshman faces a myriad of major choices and adjust¬ ments. The adjustments are universal, but the choices are in¬ dividual. Clubs, cliques, and crowds swarm before him. Up¬ perclassmen, teachers, and exams whirl and loom, revolve and recede. Frequently frantic or passively • panicked, the freshman models himself after the casual nonchalance of the secure upperclassmen. He is looking for the place where he belongs; he is sure there is a place, and so he must make daily choices that will affect his future. A successful fresh¬ man year is but a step towards a well-adjusted life . . . which is itself a progression of choices. First row l. to r., M. Rezendes, K. Kaplin, J. Dufour, M. Faria, T. Although our own F.T.A. is relatively new, it nonetheless has a large membership and is one of the most ac¬ tive clubs in the school. Teaching is a challeng¬ ing and rewarding profession. And so our under¬ classmen should remember that if they plan to teach, the F.T.A. is the “first step” to a success¬ ful teaching career. First row, l. to r. L. Morrow, J. Babcock, E. Romanovitch, J. It is this group of determined souls who bear the task of translating passages from Latin to understandable English; and even then there is some doubt as to what Caesar or Cicero was saying! One day each year is theirs—Latin Day. At this time costumed students may be seen roaming the corridors anxiously awaiting a 2-or-3-period long movie about some ancient happening. Despite the dismal record, the team showed a more cohesive team spirit and a definite promise for the future. They experienced decisive routs (43- 6 at the hands of Falmouth and 44-0 at Bourne). The Cards had their moments, however. Including a 6-6 tie with the proud Vikings of Wareham, the Barnstable victory and the game with Southbridge, in which we outscored the foe in the second half after a shaky opening. Several Cardinal stalwarts were picked on area “all” teams. They in¬ cluded co-capt Mike Macedo—honorable mention, All State; co-capt. Early indications pointed toward a successful season, for what the boys lacked in experi¬ ence, they made up in desire. The season ended with a record of 8 wins and 10 losses. The team fought hard though, often missing important players through injuries. Many of the losses were by a small margin and could just as easily been victories. Our team’s best games were in losing to Holy Family, unde¬ feated league champs, by two points and beating archrival Somerset. Although we finished in sixth place, we made our presence known and we never gave up without a fight. All in all the basketball team was a credit to Case High School. Baseball ’66 With the beginning of the 1965 season came the stubborn icy blasts of a spring that wanted to play winter. The Cardinal nine weren’t bothered by this cold and proved it by starting out ' the season with a red hot record. The Redbird nine rolled up im¬ pressive wins against area teams such as Somerset (9-1), Diman (17-10) and Apponequet (18-2). The end of the second half was, as some people put it, “something else”. A heartbreaker was lost to Somerset (4-3), D-R took first place away with the score (6-1) and O-R took away all hopes with a (3-2) win in the final game of the season. The Cardinals finished a respectable second with a 13 and 6 record. LARRY PAULHUS—Manager V , ' MIKE MACEDO—Captain 1st row: J. Doherty, J. Eddy, R. Goff, D. Bibeau, A. Carreiro, M. Buckley, G. HARRY McKINLEY Track The Case High Track Team finished its 1965 season with a record of two wins, three losses, and finished third in the Nar- ry League Meet. The results of these meets were as follows: Case vs. Somerset 55-49 Case vs. Dighton 38-66 Case vs. Old Rochester 61-43 Case vs. Bishop Feehan 20-57 Case vs. Apponequet 45-59 The Case team compiled 24 points in the Narry meet to se¬ cure third place. The top scorer for the team was Ed Malmborg, who fin¬ ished the season with a total of 50 pts. Other high scorers for the season were: Jerry Johnson 35%, Bob English 29, Ed Bol¬ duc 22, and Harry McKinley 22 . This year’s team although losing many of its high point earners to the alumni ranks has been strengthened by the out¬ standing performances of Paul Cote, Steve Cross and Art Pa¬ checo. Coach La Fazia expects these other men to gather points in the 1966 season: Brad Remy, Jack Jean, Carl Windle, Harry McKinley, Eugene Willette, Gene Desrusseaux, Chuck Smith, Paul LaPointe, Richard Matton. 3rd l. to r. Cross Country “Okey, let’s get the cals out of the way.” Thus started another sweating round of practice for Coach Johnson’s team. The sound of feet running on hard pavement was the signal for the coming of a hard-bred core of boys who wanted to win. Since the renewal of cross country four years ago a dismal record of 0-10 for three seasons was eyed disgustingly. They won two meets. The de¬ sire to win was too overpowering to have another season follow the previous patterns. The basis which was being built for three years started to pay off. Then the sea¬ son ended. The boys looked back with pride at what they accomp¬ lished. Probably to the casual ob¬ server it wasn’t much, but it was. To four seniors it meant a lot. It meant an accomplishment hereto¬ fore unheard of. Next year—will be better. The Case High Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team ended its season with a 9 to 1 record. Their only loss was to Somerset. The team is made up of girls who know what hard work is and what can be gained by it. Only through many long hours of practice, good sportsman¬ ship, team spirit, and a good coach can a team have as a successful year as did the Car- dinalettes. The J.V. ended their season with a 9 to 1 record also. Their only loss was to D-R. This team showed the same aspects of a varsi¬ ty team, minus experience. The Southeastern Mass.
