Although we look forward to the exciting days ahead, we remember fondly our experiences as the Class of ’62. The ’62 Chief staff hopes that each year¬ book picture will bring a pleasant smile and perhaps an occasional misty eye when we have long since left the shelter of Joseph Case High School for wider horizons. 4 Tune —Cornell Alma Mater Our strong bond can ne’er be broken Formed in dear Case High Far surpassing wealth unspoken Sealed by friendship’s tie Mem’ry’s leaflets close shall twine Around our hearts for aye, And waft us back o’er life’s broad track To pleasures of past day. Words —Class of 1947 High school life at best is passing Gliding swiftly by; Then let us pledge in word and deed Our love for dear Case High CHORUS Alma Mater—Alma Mater Deep graven on each heart Ode victorious, we go singing As from these halls we depart 5 ‘Dedccatcovt To you, Mr. McCarthy, who have faithfully shown willingness to help Case High School and the student body in every possible way, we, the Class of 1962, dedicate our yearbook. You have guided our football team on to victory and have inspired enthusiasm in its players. Your shining example of “Winning without boasting and losing without excuse” has taught all of us the meaning of this phrase. In addition, you have demonstrated to all the students by your own example a desire for learning and fair play. We, the students in the Class of 1962, say “Thank you.” 6 OSBORNE 8-6326 To the Class of 1962: Like the American Colonies in 1775, you as seniors are about to leave the fostering care of Joseph Case High School and go forward on your own. In honoring the colonial era of our country, your yearbook brings to mind such mental giants of that day as Thomas Jefferson, who graduated at nineteen from the college of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Today you may visit Colonial Williamsburg, so reconstructed in exact detail of eighteenth century life that you may easily visualize Jefferson talking with Patrick Henry and George Washington in the Apollo Room of the Raleigh Tavern. Fossibly these Virginians were planning information to be sent b} mail or messenger to Committees of Correspondence in the various colonies. These Committees served as a channel of communication for ideas leading to unity among the colonies, and later to independence from England. Events might have happened sooner in the 1770 ' s if information had reached all the colonies at one time by telephone, radio, television or tape recorder. There might have been quicker under¬ standing of events if citizens had the benefit of universal education. Today you have computers, missiles, atomic science and more space to explore. With their limited scientific facilities, however, the patriots of the colonial era held to the rock foundation of certain human values such as freedom and self government, for which they risked their lives and fortunes. Time does not change these values. In the face of the Communist threat, you can cherish the words of Jefferson: I have sworn upon the alter of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. To each ' of you I extend best wishes in your next endeavor. You will take your place with thousands of graduates, young citizens who will use modern science to preserve the human values held high in colonial days, before we were the United States of America. Sincerely yours, ft 8 Miss Helen A. Reagan PUBLIC SCHOOLS Swansea, Massachusetts JOSEPH CASE HIGH SCHOOL OSborne 8-8326 HELEN A. REAGAN, PRINCIPAL Dear Graduates, The pattern of education in a moral and physi cal sense i 3 not subject to change. The basic truths that have been given to you during your years in the Josenh Case High School will sustain you in the larger and the more complex world you are about to enter. Your faith, interpreted and fostered by your church, will be your constant guide if you are loyal to its teach¬ ings. Prom your academic cosirses you have gained an intel¬ lectual knowledge and curiosity that will permit you to satisfy your material ambitions. Your nhysical education classes and your participation in the sports points a defi¬ nite order for the preservation of your physical well being. Thus we have attempted to train the entire individual. Now as you make ready to leave your high school, I would like to re-emphasize the following precepts: Renew your faith and courage. Dare to stand for the prin¬ ciples of high ethics. Be a person of Integrity and be con¬ siderate. 3e willing always to adjust for the mutual benefit. Let your viewpoint be charitable and your judgment lenient. To each of you I bid Godspeed. 9 l ice ‘P ' UttCtyMC 4- “THe cife MR. EDWARD SILVA PUBLIC SCHOOLS Swansea. Massachusetts JOSEPH CASE HIGH SCHOOL. OSborne 8-8326 HELEN A. REAGAN, PRINCIPAL To the Class cf 1962: You have been living in an era which night he called the old frontier. In fact, this is the theme of your year¬ book. However, you are now about to live in an era which night be termed a new frontier. This frontier has no limits exeeot the limitations that you have within yourselves. This is true of all human endeavor. We are only limited by our own fallibilities. Consequently, you should orepare to become a part of a charging world whose very existence denends on your ability to cope with these changes. Just a few short years ago man was bound to the earth and today he soars through space. The technological and scientific advances which have made this change possible have created a deeper problem and it is this oroblera of the new frontier for which you must oreoare yourself. If you, as an individual, can learn to live harmoniously with your neighbor, then this country can learn to live with other countries. This is the greatest problem in the soace age today. We are challenged, as a nation, to prove that we believe in a oeaceful, democratic life. The United States can only be as strong and respected as you are with the oeonle with whom you associate. I urge you to become a well-informed member of an enlightened electorate to foster a better life for this country in its dealings with other nations. My personal best wishes to you. 10 Mrs. Pauline Vickers Mrs. Ruth Stickler SECRETARIES Mrs. Alzira DeMattos m if Mrs. Mrs. Chace, Mrs. Ormerod, Smith, Mrs. Hatfield, CAFETERIA CUSTODIAN Mrs. Frenette, Mrs. Baldwin Mrs. Phillips, Dietician. Team spirit helped in gaining seven victories with only one tie and one loss. The “Alouettes,” as the team was called, gained league recognition by upset¬ ting Barnstable 14-7. In spite of the team’s record, the Cardinals had to settle for second place in the Tri-County League. All work was not in vain, for nine boys were elected to the first two teams of the All Tri-County Teams. This record earned them the Bristol County League Championship. The Javees concluded the season with a 4-7 record. In the fall of 1958, we entered Joseph Case High School as a group of uncertain, yet enthusiastic freshmen. Our eyes gleamed with bright hopes for future suc¬ cess. We assumed our duties as a class under the leadership of our newly-elected officers: President, Joan Young; Vice- President, Jean Young; Secretary, Fay Marshall; Treasurer, Susan Ward; and Advisor, Mrs. Mary Sullivan. Highlight¬ ing the year was our riotous trip to Ben¬ son’s Wild Animal Farm. Our Freshman Prom, christened “An Oriental Evening,” and Freshman Class Day gave us an op¬ portunity to practice our social amenities ' rtycatony and etiquette. September 1959 brought a deeper sense of responsibility. We diligently un¬ dertook a candy sale and sponsored two class dances. Our advisor was Mrs. Alice Fallon and our officers were: President, Henry Dumas; Vice-President, Jean Young; Secretary, Susan Ward; Treas¬ urer, Joyce Medeiros. As juniors we became a closer knit class led by President, Katherine Kirk- man; Vice-President, Susan Ward; Sec¬ retary, Marcia Borge; Treasurer, Joyce Medeiros; and Advisor, Mr. Paul Mona¬ han. “Ring Day” found us eagerly awaiting our class rings which symbolize our form¬ ative years at Case. We will long remem¬ ber the pandemonium of the Junior-Fac¬ ulty Game which provided many rollick¬ ing moments. In the spring, we sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom, “Auf Wieder- sehen,” one of our most satisfying accom¬ plishments. Our class, with Prom Co- Chairmen Jean Benevides and Raymond Chouinard, showed great ingenuity and teamwork in accomplishing such a tre¬ mendous task. We will fondly remember our senior year as one of diligence and gay social whirl. Advised by Mr. Paul Monahan, our class was headed by President, John Schaefer; Vice-President, Dennis Quin¬ lan; Secretary Carolyn Dewey; and Treasurer, Jo-Ann Hickey. Our two pub¬ lications, “The Chief,” edited by Karen Riendeau, and “The Cardinal,” added to vivid memories of our senior year. The spaghetti supper, undertaken to supple¬ ment our treasury, offered unusual expe¬ rience in rolling meatballs and stirring spaghetti sauce. The festivity of the Senior Banquet, the solemnity of Chapel Week, the gaiety of Class Day, and the finality of graduation concluded our years at Case.
