The rpemory of them we would like to carry along into the future; but wonderful as the human memory is, often an outside force of some sort—a familiar face, a picture, or perhaps even just a few words— is needed to stimulate this fascinating faculty. The yearbook staff has done their utmost to publish a yearbook which will call to mind the many joyous and happy days of our youth. JANICE MURPHY Eclitor-in-Chief 2 M CLUBS MUSIC 1 1 L Ff R TURFS J. CAPITOL Ticfminislraiion 7 Town pf Swansea, Massachusetts Department pf Public Schools RICHARD B. GREENMAN. SUPERINTENDENT OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT Joseph case high school OSBORNE 8-8326 To the Class of 1959: Would you prefer to travel around the world In eighty days or eighty hours? In 1872 young readers of Jules Verne ' s Around the World in Eighty Days would have given much to make that fascinating trip with Phileas Fogg. Narrow escapes, last minute solutions to impossible problems, and a race with time to win a wager made the tale popular. The same readers today would settle for no less than a jet-stream voyage around the globe, with fewer hardships and no adventures except the achievement of speed. They would see little, meet no one, and arrive safely. The speed of travel today enables you to go farther in limited time and see more places in the world. You can revisit areas you like and have a greater number of trips in your life¬ time with a greater variety of experiences than was possible eighty years ago. This is good, for you learn more about your world and are prompted to study so that you can better under¬ stand what you see. Your trip through life can be speedy, with great effort to get somewhere and little attention given to the fascinating years through which you are passing. On the other hand, you can enjoy each year without the plodding progress of a wagon train or the tedious voyage of a clipper ship. You can set a fast pace to reach each point in your life, but once there you can take time to enjoy its benefits and opportunities before taking off with the roar of jets for your next adventure. No doubt you will want to live at times as if you were circling the globe in eighty hours. Such speed will enable you to spend time at the eighty—day rate in places and activities you enjoy. Science places you in a modern world, but there is always time to pause and live a little in those areas which give the most satisfaction, if you will but find them. For you all I wish safe journeys and time to live at each destination. Sincerely yours, 8 CPrii nncipa A s m essaye Town of Swansea, Massachusetts Department of Public Schools JOSEPH CASE HIGH SCHOOL OSBORNE 8-8326 HELEN A. REAGAN, PRINCIPAL Members of the Class of 19E 9 Dear Boys and Girls: Another June has rolled around, a June that holds particular significance for you, for this June marks for you both an end and a beginning. Your days of childhood are now behind you and you stand on the threshold of that great tomorrow that is yours to do with as you will. Thank God that you are young. Rejoice that you are Americans; that to you all barriers of birth, wealth, and social position are non-existent. The fundamental training you have received in high school is but a first step to enable you to take advantage of the intellectual resources in which our land abounds. There is nothing to prevent your attaining a worth and a dignity that will allow you to grow into your potentialities and achieve whatever you have the potentiality to achieve. Remember that all success is relative and that your contribu¬ tion, if honestly and intelligently given, is necessary for the perfection of the universal pattern. Live your life with forward face and joyous heart. Render to each succeeding stage of your life the full measure of your strength and devotion. Never give up the dreams of your youth, and, finally, may you come at last to know the great Common human heart of us all. May God bestow His richest gift on all of you. 9 Town of Swansea, Massachusetts Department of Public Schools JOSEPH CASE HIGH SCHOOL OSBORNE 8-8326 HELEN A. REAGAN. PRINCIPAL To the Class of ' £9: As you complete your years of work at Case High School you see before you the promise of new horizons and opportunities not evident to previous graduating classes. You are about to take your place in a world only dreamed of just a few short years ago. The entire uni¬ verse beckons man to a new future; a challenge to the pioneering nature of man. It may seem strange to think of space travel as pio¬ neering, or the moon and the sun as frontiers. However, this is ac¬ tually the case, and some of you are the pioneers in this exacting technological venture. This pioneering requires more than courage and desire. Its most important requisite is education, and this, graduates, is something you have to earn. I cannot impress upon you strongly enough the ur¬ gency for additional le arning, whether this be formal or informal. Your life must be devoted to an understanding of the myriad changes occurring in our world, so that if you cannot pioneer at least you may be aware of the struggle for the frontier, or as the poet Whitman Sa S ”Lo, the darting bowling orbj Lo, the brother orbs around, all the clustering suns and planets, All the dazzling days, all the mystic nights with dreams, PioneersJ 0 pioneers! These are of us, they are with us. All for primal needed work, while the followers there in embryo wait behind. We to-day ' s procession heading, we the route for travel clearing. We were all very excited about taking an active part in the stu¬ dent body of Case High School, and venturing into any activities which would come before us in the next four years. With Mr. Edward R. Silva as our advisor, we plunged into events of the year. Ronald Walker, president; June Venturini, vice president; Ann Thayer, secretary; and Donald Gustafson, treasurer, were the class officers elected. Every event held was both socially and financially a success, and when Class Day arrived, we were both proud and eager to let everyone know that we were an outstanding class. Leaving our freshman year, we had an anxious and enthusiastic outlook upon entering the senior high school. Mrs. Alice Fallon advised us in our sophomore year, and the officers elected to serve with her were Donald Gustafson, president; Jeanne Chouinard, vice president; Maureen Donovan, secretary; and William Freeman, treasurer. Selling greeting cards, and sponsoring two successful dances were our main accomplishments of the year. In 1957 we began the last half of our four year high school career. This time our class was ad¬ vised by Mr. Paul F. Monahan. Serving as class officers were Donald MacLeod, president; Harvey Mackie, vice president; Ann Thayer, secretary; and Bruce Demoranville, treasurer. Aside from spon¬ soring our dances, the class held a very successful paper drive, ' and the most satisfying accomplish¬ ment of all— Evening in Paris, our Junior-Senior Prom. Eagerly the class planned and worked to make our prom the best ever presented at Case. Before our Junior year was over we realized how much our class advisor meant to us, so we voted to dedicate our senior yearbook to Mr. Paul F. Monahan. September 1958 rang in with great excitement, for we were now seniors climbing our last steps in our high school life and Miss Rita Sollivan, our advisor helped us every step of the way. In early September, we elected our class officers for the final time-. Alexander McCrae, president; Ann Thayer, secretary; and Jeanne Chouinard, treasurer. As seniors we lived our most important school year. The yearbook was the most important undertaking and with Janice Murphy, as editor-in- chief, the book rolled off the press smoothly. As seniors we were also allowed to make up the staff of the Cardinal, our school newspaper. As our high school days have slowly diminished, our physical and mental learning have in¬ creased steadily. Our sincere thanks go to our advisor. Miss Rita Sullivan, for her undivided time and effort which she has bestowed upon us, and also to Miss Helen A. Reagan, Principal, and to Superintendent Richard B. Greenman, and to all the teachers and friends who have helped our class through Joseph Case High School. 60 ♦ I 1 1™ -« M: i ■ ; ' -sr£l f 3Pn. ■ 4 ’ MvMnA aBRA JBaMsStagfc gtfffmfi- j ¥■ i ■■ umors MR. Hampered by injuries throughout the season, there were games which could have gone the other way if not for lack of manpower. No matter how far behind they were the Maroon and Gold eleven did not quit, and for this they can be commended. Jeanne, an all-round student, active in many extracurricular activities has been a valuable asset to both the Class of ' 59 and to Case High School. The class wishes her much happiness and success in the years that lie ahead. 124 This year, the Harvard Book has been awarded to James R. Johnson. Each June, the Harvard Club of Fall River presents this award to a boy in the junior class out¬ standing for his capabilities of leadership and character. James is intelligent, gentle¬ manly, cooperative, and ambitious, justly deserving of this honor. We, the students of Joseph Case High School, hope James will find this award a symbol of success; and we wish him happiness and good luck in the future. 125 01.
