FOREWORD The oft-repeated cycle of the year has intrigued mankind since the beginning of time. Not only is this change manifested in nature ' s pattern of the seasons, it is also demonstrated in the human span of exist¬ ence. We, the class of 1957, have selected the sequence of animals as the theme of this year ' s Chief. To us our yearbook is a treasury of golden memories gleaned throughout our four years at Joseph Case High School. Many hours have been spent in preparing this edition of The Chief. We hope that you will enjoy our yearbook as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for publication. ° The Staff 1 Class Advisor: Miss Rita Sullivan School Colors: Maroon and Gold Symbol: Chief and Cardinal Class Flower: American Beauty Rose ALMA MATER Tune-CORNELL ALMA MATER Our strong bond can ne ' er be broken Formed in dear Case High Far surpassing wealth unspoken Sealed by friendship ' s tie. WILLIAM J. SAMOS We, the class of 1957, take great pride in dedicating The Chief to Mr. William J. Samos. Asa teacher and class advisor, he piloted the Ship of ' 57 on an unerring course and it is because of his friendly interest that we have reached a safe harbor. We shall always remember him as a sincere friend. O 7; o o ® m MISS RITA SULLIVAN The staff of the 1957 Chief wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to you, Miss Sullivan, for your unfaltering patience and en¬ couragement. Your undying interest and conscientious guidance have inspired us to do our best, and we hope that we have proved worthy of your time and effort. Fortunately, the fear has subsided with the realization that I have a superb staff which will profit and advance greatly under the capable guidance of our yearbook advisor, Miss Rita Sullivan. Our goal is that of each staff which has preceded us—to better the work of its predecessor. With this goal in mind, we will try to give to the class of 1957 a yearbook that will serve as a mirror, reflecting pleas¬ ant memories of glorious high school years. We are proud of Case High School . . . proud of its faculty . . . proud of its students . . . proud of its organizations and activities . . .proud to highlight outstanding events which have aided us in preparing for the future. When we look through this yearbook five or ten years from now, we may recall this famous line from our Case .High Song: For search the east and search the west but still Case High is best! A. R. AWARD Each year the D. A. R. award is presented to an outstand ing girl in the senior class. This year we are proud to announce that Edith Olson has been chosen by the students and faculty for her loyalty, devotion, and service to her class, school, and community. We are grateful to Edith for the services that she has offered through her school endeavors and extracurricular activities. The Class of 1957 extends to you, Edith, wishes for much happiness and success in the years that lie ahead. GOOD GOVERNMENT DAY REPRESENTATIVE This year Case High School was represented on Good Government Day by William Marr. Bill rates high in scholastic achievement, and is very active in sports and other extracurricular activities. Luck, success, and happiness, from the Class of 1 957 to you, Bill, in all your future endeavors. HARVARD BOOK AWARD The Harvard Book, presented to a junior boy capable in leadership and displaying unusual character, has been an annual feature at Case High School. The book, awarded this year to Robert Fiddler, who was selected by the faculty, is offered by the Harvard Club of Fall River, and is presented at the graduation ceremonies in June. Robert, an outstanding student and all-around member of the Class of ' 58, must be considered a true leader, worthy of this honor. The entire school—both students and faculty—extend congratulations and the best of everything to you, Robert! FOOTBALL QUEEN Featured on the evening of November 3, at the Gridiron Coronation was the crowning of the Football Queen, Pamela Pickens, who was selected by the football team. Pamela certainly deserved the honor as she was head cheerleader for two years and very active in girls ' sports. She was seated on a throne draped in maroon velvet and crowned with a head piece of roses and mums by William Marr, Co-captain of the foot¬ ball team. S ' ,j ■ ■ • ■ •, • , •; The year 1957 promises to be a highly significant one due to the fact that the members of the Student Council of Joseph Case High School began a campaign, December 13, to raise funds enabling a student from a European country to come to study at Case High during the ' 57 and ' 58 semesters. This project is known as Case ' s Action for Peace. The foreign student to be chosen will be sponsored through the American Field Service whose headquarters is in New York. All student council members and assistants sold shares as a means of raising the necessary funds to bring a European student to Case. The cost of each share was one dollar. The town was canvassed by a well-chosen group of representatives who outlined the program. This program would not have been at all possible if i t hadn t been in the hands of a responsible leader. The Student Council gives their sincere appreciation to Mrs. Papandrea, whose ambitious qualities and understanding made Case ' s Action for Peace successful. BUSINESS BEES r ; .1 f J M f j r i ll f. Joseph Case High School ' s 1956 football team retained the Narry League Crown it had won in 1 955. The spirited Cardinals, after an undefeated season in ' 55 opened their ' 56 season with an 0-0 tie with Oliver Ames of North Easton. Two week later the Case eleven downed Franklin High 14-7 in a hard fought contest. Case then trounced Yarmouth 32-13, and Falmouth 20-6, before bowing to a determined Mansfield club 24- 26. The Cardinals, quickly, returned to the winning trail again with victories over Dartmouth, 14-6 and Dighton, 27-0. Case finished the season in a blaze of glory, by downing our traditional rival, Somerset, Thanksgiving morning at Hanson Me¬ morial Field in Somerset. The game was to decide the Narry League Champion for ' 56—and Case, with spirit, determination, and drive, proved to have all the merits of a champ as they sunk Somerset, 18-12, thus retaining the 49ers Trophy and adding another to Case ' s growing collection of gold. The future looks bright for this year, for Somerset went down to defeat at the hands of the Cards, the first time in 25 years. Prevost has been defeated twice and Holy Family was downed by Case, the first time in the school ' s history. Having bowed to Somerset twice, the girls still have a good chance of copping second place in the Narry League standings. Our new coach, Mr. Dufault, who has worked with the team since September, has high hopes for its success. Participating in interstate competition, Donald Gustafson drew fourth position in the 300 yard run. Donald Britcliffe, showing strength and stamina through the last year, placed fourth in -the thousand yard run. Building a powerful relay team will be Mr. Dufault ' s main objective this year. Half-Time at the Game On Thanksgiving morning . . . Lending a helping hand . . . Guess Who ? ? ? CLASS HISTORY In September of 1953, a group of eager, uncertain students began their four year journey through high school. As freshmen, we were limited as to the sponsor¬ ing of social events, but we took an active interest in various athletic and social activities. We returned to school in the fall of 1954 as sophomores and we were very fortunate to have Mr. Samos as our advisor. Our social activities increased greatly, and we sponsored many various dances. Returning in September of 1955 as juniors, Mr. Samos was again our advisor. Along with many other social events, our principal duty this year was to plan for the annual prom. For the first time, the prom was held in the gymnasium. The name chosen was In an Oriental Garden, and the gym was beautifully decorated with a Chinese theme carried throughout. One of the most beautiful scenes was a fountain with running water set off in one corner of the gym. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Prom Queen, Barbara Borden, on a swing decorated with gay pink flowers. As we assembled in 1956 for our fourth and final year, Miss Sullivan became our new advisor as Mr. Samos did not return to Case. Plans were begun for the annual yearbook under the supervision of Miss Sullivan. Barbara Santos was elected editor-in-chief; Mary Aguiar and Pamela Pickens, assistant editors; and Edith Olson, business manager. As our high school days are quickly fleeing by, we now realize how vital these four years have been in our lives. No matter what course each of us may pursue we will always remember our four years at Case High School. Joyous years have passed Since we came to Case High. Where have they gone to? Oh! They ' ve flown by. In ' 53 we opened the doors To study, sports, and fun. All of these we ' ve truly had, Each and every one. Remember the proms, games, and mischief. In which we all took part. Or do you remember the empty corridors After school, so lonely and dark? Little things we did through the years Our teachers, our dates, and our friends. Hit tunes such as True Love And all those crazy trends? Will be remembered from year to year As time progresses on. And with each grey hair you ' ll wonder Where have those precious years gone. Oh! Don ' t forget all those championship teams In football, basketball, and track. These are something on which you boys Can with great pride look back. All these memories have been recorded For your pleasure in future years. A lay it bring back those happy days Of laughter, fun, and tears. The yearbook staff has worked and strived And also had some fun. We always met the deadlines. Somehow, we got things done. We hope this yearbook is a great success, For we ' ve worked to make it so.
