Swansea Free Public Library 69 Main Street Swansea, MA 02777 W-4-t M M This Book Belongs To We, the Class of ’56, proudly present The Chief S ' atiqn is a door—a gateway to a -My. % ' d through NEVER FORGET . . . How fast the years in school have fled; Four years of life forgotten, dead! No, not forgotten! Never dead! They live forever in our hearts instead. How exciting these years have been With their many problems and our will to win. The path was rugged, but the goal is near, And we face the future without doubt or fear. The encouragement of a teacher, the smile of a friend They last forever; they never end. Our memories will linger through many a year; Through darkness or sunshine, through sorrow or cheer. D E D I C A T I O N MRS. ALICE C. FALLON We, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-six, are proud to dedicate The Chief” to Mrs. Alice C. Fallon, in appreciation and gratitude for her undying interest in our welfare, her enduring patience, and her efforts toward making our high school years a success. She has woven into our high school life a pattern of wisdom and fair play not found in text books alone, but also in the strength of unity, coopera¬ tion, and purpose. We wish to express our appreciation to you, Mrs. Fallon, for the helpful start which you have given us so generously. The story began in the boarding house of Mr. and Mrs. Dubois, in Paris. The time was one week before Christmas. Living at this boarding house were four students— Jacquot of Yugoslavia, (a refugee); Judy of the United States; Heather of Scotland; and Ling-Koo of Formosa. As the scene opened, we found Mr. and Mrs. Dubois in the living-room. Ling-Koo, an artist, entered and delivered a package for Judy. As the scence closed, Jacquot entered and told Mr. Dubois that he was in some sort of trouble. Later, related an encounter in which Lieutenant Malfos, a Communist leader of the prison camp, lost his thumb struggling with Jimmy and his guide the night of his narrow escape. As the story con¬ tinued, the Chief of Police told Jacquot that Mr. Malfos was captured the previous night. CHARACTERS Mme. Dubois .. . DORIS COTTLE AL Dubois . RONALD GUIMOND Ling-Koo . HARVARD BOOK The Harvard Book, presented to a Junior boy, capable in leadership and displaying unusual character, has been an annual feature at Case High School. The book, awarded this year to Bradford Cole, who was selected unanimously by the faculty, is offered by the Harvard Club of Fall River, and is presented at the graduation ceremonies in June. Bradford, an outstanding, intelligent, and all-around member of the Class of ’57, must be considered a true leader and a patriotic citizen, worthy of this honor. The entire school—both students and faculty—extend congratulations and best of everything to you, Bradford! FOOTBALL QUEEN Go Case Go,” a junior class dance, was held on November 20th and, at that event, our football queen was crowned. This year the student body chose Katherine Allen as queen because of her poise, character, and friendliness. Luck, happiness, and success to you, Queen Kay! HISTORY In the fall of 1952, a group of uncertain, timid students began their long journey through high school. As freshmen, we were fortunate to have Mr. Thomas Dillon chosen to guide us and to assure us of a pleasant journey. Before we knew it, June had arrived and we happily put away all thoughts of school for the summer. We felt, however, re¬ warded for our efforts in various endeavors. We returned in September of 1953 ready to resume our studies as sophomores. Since Mr. Dillon did not return to Case that year, Mrs. Alice Fallon became our advisor. This year our social activities expanded to a greater degree than the previous year as we participated in more of the school activities and sponsored more dances than had been done before. In September of 1954, we came back to school as juniors. It was our privilege this year to sponsor the annual prom. The title that was selected was Stardust Serenade.” The Prom Queen was Susan Beynon and her throne was beautifully decorated with flowers and background of a large silver crescent moon. We assembled for our final year realizing that we had a big year ahead of us and the annual yearbook plans were begun. Dorothea Peacock was elected Editor-in-chief with Doris Cottle and Judith Jackson as Assistant Editors; and Anne Ash as Business Manager. The class, under the leadership and guidance of Mrs. Fallon, began the sale of greeting cards and candy. These sales proved a great success, and we wish to express our appre¬ ciation to Mrs. Fallon for her assistance. As high school days are coming to an end, we leave with heartfelt memories and sincere gratitude. Although each of us goes his own way, we shall often think of one another and of our happy experience at Case High School. The win gave Case the Narry Crown and the 49’ers trophy while it left the loser 13 percentage points short of the Class D State Championship. The game was most exciting in the traditional rivalry. Case started on an eighty yard run by Bob Morais who then converted the extra point attempt to put Case ahead by seven points. Later on during the second period when quarterback Bill Marr, who was outstanding throughout the game, intercepted a pass on the fifty yard line and returned it for the touchdown. This made the score 13-0 which lasted to the end of the first half. Somerset’s lone scoring drive was started at the beginning of the second half as they capitalized on a Cardinal fumble and marched forty-five yards for their only score. The final score in the game resulted when Somerset fumbled on their own forty-eight and then Case moved quickly for the touchdown. The win was the first Case victory since 1948 and first Narry Crown since 1946. Case was also fifth ranking in Class D for the state of Massachusetts. The game attracted the largest crowd in history as over six thousand fans jammed Memorial Field to see the game. Frank Kenworthy, Warren Chace, Frank Donaldson, Darryl Doane, Bob Morais, and Bill Marr are the members of the team who were selected to the All-Narry League. ' COACH CASSIDY Much of the credit for the success of the Case football team should go to the head coach, Jim Cassidy. Coach Cassidy, who has been in Swansea for four years, put together a group of well-seasoned players and formed a team that was tough to beat. Coach Cassidy said that he was of the opinion that the willingness to work on the part of the team was the most important factor in the success of the team this year. it 8 1 %% «... With five games remaining, the girls have an overall record of seven victories and one defeat. Their Narry League record of four victories and one defeat is enough to give them a one game lead over Somerset. Five of eight varsity players are juniors, leaving a nucleus around which next year’s team can be built. Following are the members of the varsity team: Pam Pickens,, Barbara Gadbois, Doro¬ thy Mocomber, and Judy Jackson — Forwards. Edith Olson, Carolyn Rapoza, Judy Saunders, and Janet Hancock—Guards. Members of the J.V. team are: Carole Howarth, Barbara Santos, Dolores LaHaie, Claudette Levesque, Jean Choinard, Maureen Richard—Forwards. Sylvia Horton, Sharon Manley, Betty Omerod, Judy Beynon, Jane Taylor, Gilliam Lamb—Guards. TRACK First row: Bob Morais, Don Gustafson, Chuck Gray, and Don Kenyon. Second row: Charlie Gard¬ ner, Norm Mackie, Don Britcliff, Jerry Pineault, and Tom Crowe. Third row: Jim Martin, Tom Eaton, Harris Levine, Dick McDaniels, and Bob Quinlan. Fourth row: Russell Lord, John Brickhill, Bill Russ, Ben Adams, Lewis Machie, and Herb Souza. Others: Bill Freeman, Joe Quinlan, Bill Bliss, Gerald Mullen, Will Theriault, Paul Guimond, Mike Howayeck, and Lionel Moniz. The Case High team was quite successful at the B.A.A. Schoolboy and Fargo meet. From a marvelous display of sportsmanship and teamwork, our trackmen received a total of twelve points. Three runners, Tom Crowe, Norm Mackie, and Don Gustafson, a ninth grader, qualif ied for finals for the fifty-yard dash. This was a phenomenon since one school is allowed only three entries for each race. They proved their ability by placing second, third, and fourth in the finals for nine big points. The relay team, consisting of Chuck Gray, Bob Morais, Tom Crowe, and Don Gustafson, also did very well coming in third in the final heat. Placing third in Class D, the Case Runners out-ran such teams as Winchester, Lex¬ ington, Attleboro, and Somerset. The coach and the team expect to do very well this year, both in the Narry League and dual mets. Coach Theriault stated that, although it was rather early in the season to determine the quality of the team, he was very satis¬ fied with his dash-men.” Everyone wishes the track team the success that it truly deserves. When queried as to the team, Coach Theriault had this to say— I am ext remely proud of the gentlemanlike manner in which all of these boys have always conducted them¬ selves at and after meets. They were a credit to their school and themselves; there were many improvements in character as well as other abilities.” PATRONS AND PATRONESSES MR. AND MRS. DOUGLAS H.
