P yietwyuC We present this book as a memento of our four precious years at Case High School. As graduation nears and we go to take our places in the outside world, the knowledge gained and the lasting friend¬ ships enjoyed will serve as a firm foundation for building our future success. DedicattoK We, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty-five, are proud to dedicate The Chief to Mrs. Julia Papandrea. Her helpful guidance, kindly understanding, and amicable interest have become our symbol of success. We are grateful for her constant patience and help. ADMINISTRATION SENIORS ScAool -£i£e 4cUfU U tMtiOH ‘P’U tcifrtU ' 4- ' Tlt i ciye Dear Members of the Class of 1 955: I would speak to you of an unwanted trust. In the material world those things which are most plentiful are usually held in least esteem. An object has value in the eyes of most men according to the degree of rarity which it possesses. The ordinary commodities of everyday life are noticed little, and, as a rule, valued even less by those who use them. They grow tiresome after long familiarity and man en¬ deavors to refresh himself by seeking new and different sub¬ stitutes. One of the most extensive and commonplace elements of life and one which is often tossed aside as of little worth is that group of duties which form man ' s responsibilities. Common everyday duties imposed by man ' s position in life and relations to those around him, carry with them a prosaic obligation without any of the thrill of the new and untried. Around these duties his severest mental struggles are usually fought, yet finally he must come to realize that loyalty to them is one of the most efficient agents in building character. History offers notable examples of great men and women who have willingly met their responsibilities, however burdensome they have been, and have fulfilled them unflinchingly. .Milton, who had given up his poetic work to write for the cause of the Commonwealth in England, cheerfully sacrificed his sight rather than shirk the duties he had undertaken. Sir Walter Scott spent the best years of his life working to pay off the debts of a publishing company in which he had invested, and, for a similar reason, our own Mark Twain undertook several extended lecture tours which severely taxed his health. An all-pervading realization of the necessity of subordinating personal con¬ venience to the obligations of life is the basis of actions such as these. So far in life you have had few responsibilities of importance. You have been dependent upon others to a large extent in the determination of your everyday duties. Now you find yourself met by greater responsibilities. Now the time comes when you must decide what duties and obligations you will undertake in life. When you have come to a decision, you will find yourself bound to a set of duties. These duties will become greater as you grow older. Knowing this, you must have the courage to accept the responsibilities of your trust. One of the strongest criticisms against the youth of today is that he lacks a sense of responsibility. Such an accusation is probably no more true of you than it has been of every younger generation, yet this fact does not free you from the obligation of acquiring the same sense which is lacking. There have always been human beings who have rebelled against the trust placed in them. Since the beginning of time people have tried to slip out from under the burden of their responsibilities. We all feel at some time a desire to repeat the question which was defiantly flung at God when the world was yet new, Am I my brother ' s keeper? Always we have a definite answer. We know the answer before we ask the question. Each one is truly entrusted with the keeping of his brother and in the fulfilling of this trust we will find the happiness of keeping ourselves also. We must all come to realize the truth of the words: No man is born unto himself alone, Who lives into himself, he lives to none. MR. WILLIAM TOLAND Music MR. EDWARD WRIGHT Automotive Shop MR. Anxious to become an active part of the student body, we gradually proceeded to join the upperclassmen in various organizations and athletic events. The Freshman Dance was a main social function during our first year. Our Sophomore year began with more activity. We elected our class officers, began sponsoring more dances, and participated in more school functions. During our Junior year, a promising project was introduced. A plate representing Massa¬ chusetts with Swansea artistically printed across it proved to be very successful financially. As upperclassmen, we were responsible for sponsoring the annual Prom. The chosen title was Moonlight and Roses. A beautiful silver crescent moon at the head of the king and queen ' s throne, in addition to other decorations, made the hall a scene of awe inspiring beauty. At the approach of our senior year, we prepared for the important year that lay ahead by electing our yearbook officers and staff. Camilla Fiske was the chosen Editor-in-Chief, with Anne Freeman and Marguerite Pacheco as the Co¬ editors, and Bernard Lebecki as the Business Manager. As our high school days have slowly diminished, our physical and mental development has steadily progressed. Although the light of the future beams on different goals for many of us, the links of friendship that we have united here will always be inscribed in our memories in the years to follow. 51-52 52-53 53-54 54-55 President Vice President Secretary Treasurer ROBERT GROVER MICKEY MANLEY JOSEPH COMO MARILYN MACCOMBIE DANA PLANTE PAUL CROSSON CAMILLA FISKE NANCY TRIPP DANA PLANTE HAROLD MONIZ VIRGINIA OLIVEIRA MARGUERITE PACHECO CLIFF ROSS CAMILLA FISKE VIRGINIA OLIVEIRA MICKEY MANLEY i tderietci44me t OutUonA Advisor Mrs. Alice Fallon CLASS OFFICERS President Sandra Bell Vice President Dodie Peacock Secretary Priscilla McConnell Treasurer Doris Desruisseaux Advisor Mr. William Samos CLASS OFFICERS President Kevin Travis Vice President David Mitchel Secretary Pam Pickens Treasurer Judy Saunders ««° e B f • j jn ' ° r V ' 9 h Cjcho 0 - VAe e ° «r; e 5- o. On October 8th, 77 social studies students from Case enjoyed a field trip in New York City- The plans for the trip were made under the direction of Mrs. Marjorie Vinal, Director of World Affairs Council. The high-light of the trip was a tour of the United Nations Build¬ ing. The students, accompanied by three faculty chaperones, gathered at the Union Station in Providence at !):0() A. M. There were four groups consisting of about twenty members in each group. The students who participated in the trip were: Group 1, chaperoned by Mr. Papandrea: Mary Aguiar, Katherine Allen, Susan Bey non, Janet Blanchard, Barbara Burden, Merrilyn Borden, Richard Brice, (Continued oil Page 2) After weeks, of preparation for its debut, the new CARDINAL was released, to he public, on October 19, 195-1. Everyone’s efforts seemed rewarded when the Care students commented on how they liked the new style,, new articles, and pictures featured in the, paper. Anyone who had any part in help¬ ing to write the paper was except¬ ionally happy of its reception be cause of the many hours of work put into the paper and the ever growing suspense of whether the new CARDINAL would be readily accepted. This Cardinal proved to he not only larger in its content but to be greeted by the largest sales of any previous Case newspaper- Four hundred and fifty papers were sold: Not only to students but to many townspeople as well. Advertise¬ ments, when totaled, proved to be greater than any previous years. The staff would like to take this space to thank all the merchants of Swansea who in any way helped the Cardinal with their extremely generous financial support. in Tins ISSUE Complete Sports Coverage Pages 4 and ; r l r ! To do this they try to stimulate and hold the en thusiastic support of the specta¬ tors, who provide the spark needed for team morale and aggresivt team play. The girls are proud to be cheer¬ leaders and try to do justice to their positions. They must cooper¬ ate at all times ar.d remain peppy and vivacious regardless of the score. Cheerleaders display good sportsmanship by cheering for an injured player on the opposite team, and cheering for the oppos¬ ing team at half time. Do you, as a spectator, follow tlig examples set forth by the cheer¬ leaders? If you would really like to help them out, you can do so by joining the pep squad. It isn’t too late to join now, and with a pep squad backing up the cheer¬ leaders, the team will really have an inspiration, and the opposing team will think, What wonderful I school spirit they have! ‘ . This year Virginia Oliveira was chosen by both the students and the faculty, for her leadership, devotion, and service. While at Case, Virginia has been active in many extracurricular activities, and she has benefited both the Senior Class of ' 55 and Case High School itself. For this we are very grateful. The class wishes her much luck and happiness in the future. Each year an outstanding boy in the Junior Class is chosen by the faculty for the Harvard Award. This year Norman Pineault was selected and he will receive the honor at Commencement exercises in June. The Harvard Award, offered by the Harvard Club of Fall River, is symbolic of exceptional scholarship and character. Norman is a versatile student, devoted to his class, and very active in the Photography Club. Congratulations and success are extended to you, Norman, from the class of ' 55. This year the honor of representing Case High School on Good Government Day was given to Dana Plante. Dana is an all A student and also participates in football, basketball, and track. The award was bestowed on Dana late in November when the Senior Class nominated and elected him. Best wishes from the Class of ' 55 . On October 30th the “Gridiron Coronation dance was held. At this event it is our annual custom to crown the Football Queen elected by the student body. The queen is chosen on the basis of character, poise, and, friendliness. This year the honor was given to Carol Manley who, with her charming personal¬ ity, is perfectly suited for this role. Good Luck to you, Queen Carol! OCTOBER ?954 SEPTEMBER JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL W s4t6letic4 --H ■■■■ Co-Captains ROBERT SILVESTRE JOHN PYSZ pootfcUC The football team of 1954 was a team that fought right up until the last second of the Thanksgiving Day game. The team left both victory and defeat in its wake. The scores, by far, do not do the team justice, but we know that the boys did their best and, as far as we are concerned, they are the real champions. The team has won and it has lost but we do not know of one boy who has dropped off the team because he was too proud. The varsity team is largely made up of juniors and seniors. Miss Rizy has taken a comparatively green team and molded it into a well functioning group. Fortunately, she can expect many of her regulars back next season and we all hope to see the basketball squad reach the no loss column. The 1954 track meet, held at Dighton High School, proved that our teams could compete with the best from other schools. We broke our previous rec¬ ords and placed second in the Narry League.
